This paper presents the results of applying a rating scale of learning science in the
field. These studies were developed in the ambit a PhD project in progress which seeks to emphasize the
importance of using the field work in research and teaching of geology and, somehow, the connection
between geological research and pedagogical intervention (didactic transposition ).
The application of the scale resulted from the performance of six field trips, with 8 high school classes
Biology / Geology, having been obtained from a sample of 171 inquirie
Draft genome sequence of Agrobacterium deltaense strain CNPSo 3391, isolated from a soybean nodule in Mozambique
Open Access Article; Published online: 7 March 2019Agrobacterium deltaense strain CNPSo 3391 was isolated from a soybean nodule in Mozambique. Its genome size was estimated at 4,926,588 bp. This isolate carries several coding sequences for stress tolerance, but no identifiable nodulation or virulence genes. Possible ecological roles of bacteria isolated from legume nodules and closely related to Agrobacterium are discussed
INJECTABLE HYBRID SYSTEM FOR STRONTIUM LOCAL DELIVERY TO PROMOTE BONE REGENERATION
In bone tissue regeneration strategies, injectable bone substitutes are very attractive since they can
be applied with minimally invasive surgical procedures and can perfectly fill irregular defects created
in cases of trauma, infection or tumor resection. These materials must combine adequate mechanical
properties with the ability to induce new bone formation. Incorporating strontium (Sr) in bone
substitute biomaterials may be a strategy to achieve high Sr concentrations, not in a systemic but in
a local environment, taking advantage of the osteoanabolic and anti-osteoclastic activity of Sr, for
the enhancement of new bone formation. In this context, the aim of the present work was to
evaluate the response of a Sr-hybrid injectable system for bone regeneration, designed by our
group, consisting of hydroxyapatite microspheres doped with Sr and an alginate vehicle crosslinked in
situ with Sr, in an in vivo scenario. Two different animal models were used, rat (Wistar) and sheep
(Merino Branco) critical sized bone defect. Non Sr-doped similar materials (Ca-hybrid) or empty
defects were used as control. Sr-hybrid system led to an increased bone formation in both center
and periphery of a rat critical sized defect compared to a non Sr–doped similar system, where new
bone formation was restricted to the periphery. Moreover newly formed bone was identified as early
as one week after its implantation in a sheep model. After eight weeks, the bone surrounded the
microspheres, both in the periphery and in the center of the defect. Most importantly, the hybrid
system provided a scaffold for cell migration and tissue ingrowth and offered structural support, as
observed in both models. The effective improvement of local bone formation suggests that this might
be a promising approach for bone regeneration, especially in osteoporotic conditions
significativamente superior a RO (4,3 Mg hal). A fertilização azotada afetou

Response of rapeseed to nitrogen fertilisation in a mediterranean environment
Portugal needs urgently to increase the production of vegetable oils to be able to meet
the mandatory 10% minimum target to be achieved by all member states for the share of biofuels in
transport petrol and diesel consumption by 2020 (Directive 2009/28/EC).
Rapeseed oils the main raw material used in Europe for the manufacture of biofuels. Portugal, however,
does not produce rapeseed oil, in spite of some studies have indicated that there are favourable ecological
conditions to do that around the country [I, 2]
PCR identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex in a clinical sample from a patient with symptoms of tuberculous spondylodiscitis
A 42-year-old male complaining of thoracic spine pain was admitted to the hospital for evaluation. An X-ray and computer tomography of the thoracic spine showed spondylodiscitis of the L3 lumbar and L2-L3 intervertebral disk. The tuberculin skin test (PPD) was strongly positive. A radioscopy-guided fine needle aspirate of the affected area was cultured but did not reveal the cause of the disease. Two biopsy attempts failed to reveal the cause of the disease by culturing or by acid-fast-resistant staining (Ziehl Neelsen) of the specimens. A third biopsy also failed to detect the infectious agent by using microbiological procedures, but revealed the presence of a 245-bp amplicon characteristic of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex after PCR of the sample. The result demonstrates the efficacy of PCR for the identification of M. tuberculosis in situations in which conventional diagnosis by culturing techniques or direct microscopy is unable to detect the microorganism. Following this result the patient was treated with the antituberculous cocktail composed by rifampicin, pirazinamide and isoniazid during a six-month period. At the end of the treatment the dorsalgia symptoms had disappeared
Women as Key Agents in Sustainable Entrepreneurship: A Gender Multigroup Analysis of the SEO-Performance Relationship
Literature points out that the effect of sustainable entrepreneurship on firm performance may be contingent on internal factors, such as top manager characteristics. This paper proposes that the gender of a firm's chief executive officer (CEO) greatly influences the sustainable entrepreneurial orientation (SEO)-firm performance relationship. An empirical study was conducted on a stratified random sampling, collecting 210 questionnaires from top managers of firms in Valencia (Spain). A multigroup moderation analysis method was used. The results confirm that women tend to increase the positive effect of SEO in firm performance
Behaviour of piozoelectric devices embedded in bone cement
Bone cements based on polymethacrylate (PMMA) are essential products in joint arthroplasty. PMMA bone cement function is to locate the implants components in the body skeleton, load transition through the joint into the bone and muscle surrounding for a very for a very long period of time. Its mechanical properties are well established in the literature. Since bone cement fills the void between the prosthesis (polymer or metallic) and bone, it is subjected to high stress and has to operate in a relatively aggressive environment, like human body. Therefore, based on surrounding environment PMMA bone cements application, this material has specific mechanical properties that enhance a good performance in this condition. These stresses are mainly measured indirectly with non-invasive methods. In-situ measurements would be more interesting to really understand and quantify these stresses.
Piezoelectric devices are an interesting way to measure forces in difficult accessibility environment, since they are self-power, i. e., they are able to generate an electric signal by converting mechanical energy into electrics with no need for power supply. When embedded in bone cement one expects to be able to analyze the health structure in real-time. Positioning of the sensing device is a critical factor worthy of a thorough study in order to understand its behavior to surroundings
Evolution of community structure in the world trade web
In this note we study the bilateral merchandise trade flows between 186
countries over the 1948-2005 period using data from the International Monetary
Fund. We use Pajek to identify network structure and behavior across thresholds
and over time. In particular, we focus on the evolution of trade "islands" in
the a world trade network in which countries are linked with directed edges
weighted according to fraction of total dollars sent from one country to
another. We find mixed evidence for globalization.Comment: To be submitted to APFA 6 Proceedings, 8 pages, 3 Figure
