    This paper describes the concepts, ideas, background and operations of The Monument Project (Si Monumentum Requiris Circumspice), a digital video installation that produces a continuous stream of weather-responsive panoramic images from the top of the Monument in the City of London. The work, which was commissioned by Julian Harrap Architects, was part of a £4.5 million refurbishment of the 17th-century landmark, designed by Sir Christopher Wren and Dr. Robert Hooke to commemorate the Great Fire of London in 1666

    Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a multifactorial disease that slowly and inconspicuously progresses over years. Here, we present a protocol for analyzing slow progression dynamics of T2D with obesity. We describe steps for using software to exploit the differences between the timescales of the metabolic variables and using numerical continuation and bifurcation analysis. We detail procedures to analyze bi-stable system dynamics and identify the thresholds that separate healthy and diabetic states.     Environmental and Socio-Economic Impact of Mining on Immediate Communities in Kogi State Central Nigeria

    The socio-economic and environmental impacts of mining on immediate communities around Borini  Porono quarry in  Kogi State, central Nigeria were examined. A total of 100 respondents were contacted for relevant information through questionnaire administration and interviews. Quantitative methods such as Chi-square, Pair-wise ranking, and ANOVA TABLE were used to interpret the data collected.  Physicochemical analysis of the water bodies close to the quarry were carried out using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), Sherwood Flame Emission Spectrometry and Titration. The research revealed that the mining activities have resulted in cracking of buildings, there are also incidences of pollution of various kinds (air, noise and land) to the environment.  The result of the water analysis shows some trace elements such as NO-3, Fe and total coliform bacteria were present to certain level making the water not suitable for drinking. The results show that the hypothesis that residents’ appreciation of mining effects on the environments is affected by their years of stay in the communities was also validated. It was concluded that, there is need for the government to make it mandatory for mining companies at both large and small-scale, to submit environmental impact assessment report before a license to mine or explore can be granted and proper monitoring.     Another face of Lorenz-Mie scattering: monodisperse distributions of spheres produce Lissajous-like patterns

    The complete scattering matrix S of spheres was measured with a flow cytometer. The experimental equipment allows simultaneous detection of two scattering-matrix elements for every sphere in the distribution. Two-parameter scatterplots withx andy coordinates determined by the Sll + Sij and S11 - Sij values are measured. Samples of spheres with very narrow size distributions (< 1%) were analyzed with a FlowCytometer, and they produced unexpected two-parameter scatterplots. Instead of compact distributions we observed Lissajous-like loops. Simulation of the scatterplots, using Lorenz-Mie theory, shows that these loops are due not to experimental errors but to true Lorenz-Mie scattering. It is shown that the loops originate from the sensitivity of the scattered field on the radius of the spheres. This paper demonstrates that the interpretation of rare events and hidden features in flow cytometry needs reconsideration

    Formal Component-Based Semantics

    One of the proposed solutions for improving the scalability of semantics of programming languages is Component-Based Semantics, introduced by Peter D. Mosses. It is expected that this framework can also be used effectively for modular meta theoretic reasoning. This paper presents a formalization of Component-Based Semantics in the theorem prover Coq. It is based on Modular SOS, a variant of SOS, and makes essential use of dependent types, while profiting from type classes. This formalization constitutes a contribution towards modular meta theoretic formalizations in theorem provers.     Evaluation of Asa River Water in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria for Available Pollutants and their Effects on Mitosis and Chromosomes Morphology in Allium cepa Cells

    T: This study evaluated water samples from Asa River in Kwara state, Nigeria, for cytogenotoxicity at 25.0 %, 50.0 %, 100.0 % following the Allium cepa assay. Onions were grown in the water samples for microscopic and macroscopic screenings. Heavy metals and volatile organic pollutants in the water were elucidated using AAS and GCMS techniques. The Water samples except the sample ‘C’ induced higher mitotic index (MI) than the negative control. Root growth was significantly promoted at 25.0 %, and significantly reduced at 50.0 % and 100.0 % of the sample ‘C’ and 100.0 % of the sample ‘A’. Water sample ‘A’ (100.0%) induced highest percentage chromosomal aberrations (CA) while the water samples ‘B’ and ‘C’ induced higher percentage CA than the negative control. Cadmium was detected at a concentration higher than its permissible limit in drinking water. Poly aromatic hydrocarbons, Aromatic amines, Acridine dye, Phenolic and Polychlorinated compounds were detected in the water sample. The observed proliferative, inhibitory, cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of the water samples on A. cepa cells suggest that Asa river was polluted, having potential to adversely affect humans, animals and plants utilizing it along its course.
