    Interview of Diana Regan, M.A.

    Diana Regan was born in Philadelphia, on an undisclosed date, and grew up in Bryn Mawr, where she has spent her entire life with the exception of a brief time in the 1960s when she lived in New York City. Her father had his own business distributing home heating fuel oil, and her mother worked with him. She had one brother who is now deceased. Regan attended St. Thomas Aquinas elementary school in South Philadelphia, followed by high school at Mater Misericordiae Academy (now Merion Mercy Academy) in Merion, Pennsylvania. In pursuing her higher education, Regan first attended Immaculata College for one year, before receiving a Bachelor’s degree from Rosemont College in 1963, and a Master’s degree in French from Temple University in 1969. Regan has been teaching French since 1963, starting as a high school teacher at George Washington High School, Frankford High School, John Bartram High School, Masterman Demonstration High School, and Olney High School, where she also served as the head of the Foreign Language Department. She began teaching at the college-level in 1997, first as an adjunct at Chestnut Hill College, followed by a position as a French adjunct at La Salle University, starting in 1999, where she continues to teach today. Aside from teaching, Regan also devotes time to several organizations, including the American Association of Teachers of French, the Alliance Francaise de Philadelphie, and the Chestnut Hill women’s committee for the Philadelphia Orchestra, as well as organizes a travel study program through La Salle University, in which she takes students to France for ten days in a course titled ‘France in WWII, Under German Occupation’. Currently, Regan teaches at La Salle as a part-time adjunct professor, and continues her involvement in her professional organizations

    A agricultura urbana é um fenómeno generalizado em todo o mundo. Nas grandes cidades dos países em desenvolvimento e em épocas de crise económica nos países desenvolvidos, a criação de espaços para agricultura urbana tem sido um instrumento político de grande valor social que permite aumentar a segurança alimentar e mitigar a pobreza e o desemprego. Recentemente, têm surgido projetos de agricultura urbana em cidades de países desenvolvidos destinados a assegurar atividade social e qualidade de vida aos seus cidadãos. São espaços de convívio, desporto e lazer, onde as pessoas relaxam do stresse acumulado de um dia de trabalho. Nas instalações da escola Superior Agrária do Instituto Politécnico de Bragança surge em 2011 o projeto Hortas Comunitárias do IPB, desenvolvido pela Associação Cultural e Recreativa do Pessoal do Instituto Politécnico de Bragança (IPB). Esta iniciativa surge a partir da vontade de criação de espaços multifuncionais em torno dos conceitos de alimentação saudável, sustentabilidade dos recursos naturais e lazer. Assim, o projecto promove a prática de horticultura de lazer, privilegiando a agricultura biológica e sustentável, com o intuito de fomentar a convivência interpessoal e com a natureza, e a alimentação saudável dos seus utilizadores. Inicialmente restrito ao ambiente académico, rapidamente se expandiu à cidade imprimindo uma maior diversidade nos intervenientes. Este trabalho reflecte a necessidade de conhecer quem são os utilizadores das hortas do IPB, quais as suas motivações e o que fazem para alcançar os seus objetivos. Devido às suas diferentes origens, vivencias, idades e conhecimentos é possível encontrar, neste pequeno espaço, diferentes formas de estar perante a prática agrícola. Entre Novembro de 2012 e Julho de 2013 foi feita uma inquirição aos hortelãos segundo a técnica de entrevista, escrita e gravada, de forma a obter informação qualitativa e quantitativa referente a dados pessoais dos mesmos e às hortas que cultivam. Foram inquiridos 88 hortelãos, utilizadores de 51 hortas num universo total de 120 hortas. Assim foi possível traçar um perfil sócio-económico dos utilizadores a partir dos dados recolhidos e ainda perceber a importância da produção hortícola no agregado familiar. Partindo de dados fornecidos na entrevista foi possível concluir que a produção de uma horta com 50 m2 no período de primavera/verão permite que o agregado familiar reduza as suas compras em legumes, quer nos meses de maior produção quer nos meses seguintes, sendo que muitas vezes o tempo de duração do consumo chega a um ano. Foi possível ainda contabilizar, para um caso, as produções colhidas numa horta, calculando em seguida o valor da produção utilizada no consumo familiar.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Communitarian and urban gardens in Bragança, Portugal

    Since 2011, the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB), through the Cultural and Recreational Association, welcomes and sponsors a project of communitarian urban gardens carried out in the arable land of its campus. The project was designed to promote community gardening at leisure time, while focusing on organic and sustainable agricultural practices, providing healthy produce and fresh plants, as well as satisfying labor, neighborhood improvement, sense of community, connection to the environment and nature, and fostering interaction between users, which come from a broad geographical origin and have different gardening background and knowledge. In order to report motivation, agricultural performances, inventory all species grown, and to estimate the total production, we surveyed 51 gardens and we did consented interviews to 88 users from a total of 120.The authors are grateful to all the informants who kindly shared their knowledge and expertise.     Integrasi Budaya pada Masyarakat Etnis Batak ke Jawa di Perum Citra Jaya Wonogiri

    With the cultural differences between the Javanese and Batak ethnic groups, Perum Citra Jaya is able to create a high level of tolerance so as to prevent conflicts between ethnic groups. This study aims to determine cultural acculturation that occurs by analyzing how integration is formed in the Batak and Javanese ethnicities in the Perum Citra Jaya environment. This research use descriptive qualitative method. The theory used in this study is the theory of cultural acculturation by Berry and social integration theory by Talcott Parson. The sampling technique in this study was purposive sampling with four research subject who were Javanese and Batak residents at Perum Citra Jaya. Data collection is done by observation and interviews. The result of this study are that cultural acculutration that occurs in Javanese and Batak communitiea at Perum Citra Jaya occurs with social integration where intercultural communication becomes an important part of disclosing differenves and background between ethnicities with a multiculturalism method, each of which of these individuals retain their culture while interacting with other cultures. Thic multiculturalism can be seen from the good communication that exists between Javanese and Batak people and the social activities that are often carried out together

    Effects of dietary barley on rainbow trout exposed to an acute stress challenge

    Systematic reproduction and distribution, duplication of any material in this paper for a fee or for commercial purposes, or modifications of the content of this paper are prohibited.[EN] The present study evaluates the effect of dietary barley, based on its potential stress-relieving properties, on rainbow trout under acute stress challenge (hypoxia and crowding) and their recovery. Diets were formulated containing increasing barley concentrations (0, 4, 8, 16, 32%). Cortisol on plasma and fin, glucose and lactate plasma levels and malondialdehyde (MDA) in muscle were determined under normoxia before the stress test (basal levels), 30 min after the acute stress challenge and also during normoxia recovery (6 and 12 h after the stress). Results showed that at basal levels the inclusion of barley had no influence on cortisol, glucose nor on lactate values. After 30 min from the stress challenge, there was a significant increase in cortisol, glucose and lactate concentration in fish of all groups. Plasma cortisol showed the lowest levels in fish fed with diets at a medium (8%) of barley concentration and returned to basal levels 6 h after the stress stimulus with no differences between diets. Glucose values showed a less clear tendency 30 min after the stress challenge with lower levels in the control group, fish fed with 8% and 32% of barley in the diets and returned to basal levels in almost all the groups only 12 h after the stress challenge. Lactate showed the same trend as with glucose after the stress challenge but it returned to basal levels in 6 h. Interestingly, there was a significant decrease of lipid oxidation (MDA) in muscle soon after the stress test of fish fed with the highest barley levels. The present results suggest a potential positive effect of dietary barley on trout stress response.This work has been co-funded with FEDER and INIA funds.     Functional Principles of Posterior Septal Inputs to the Medial Habenula.

    The medial habenula (MHb) is an epithalamic hub contributing to expression and extinction of aversive states by bridging forebrain areas and midbrain monoaminergic centers. Although contradictory information exists regarding their synaptic properties, the physiology of the excitatory inputs to the MHb from the posterior septum remains elusive. Here, combining optogenetics-based mapping with ex vivo and in vivo physiology, we examine the synaptic properties of posterior septal afferents to the MHb and how they influence behavior. We demonstrate that MHb cells receive sparse inputs producing purely glutamatergic responses via calcium-permeable α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA), heterotrimeric GluN2A-GluN2B-GluN1 N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, and inhibitory group II metabotropic glutamate receptors. We describe the complex integration dynamics of these components by MHb cells. Finally, we combine ex vivo data with realistic afferent firing patterns recorded in vivo to demonstrate that efficient optogenetic septal stimulation in the MHb induces anxiolysis and promotes locomotion, contributing long-awaited evidence in favor of the importance of this septo-habenular pathway

    Valoración de la circunferencia de la pantorrilla como indicador de riesgo de desnutrición en personas mayores

    BACKGROUND: Undernutrition is a very common situation among elderly, that is associated with increased morbidity and mortality rates. On the other hand, calf circumference (CC) is a direct anthropometric measurement, related to fat free mass. An early detection of an elderly undernutrition situation, based on CC assessment, could contribute to prevent its development and consequences. OBJECTIVE: To analyse the relationship between CC and a possible undernutrition situation, based on the application of the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) test, among Spanish subjects of 65 or more years old, including the gender and age influences. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out to assess the nutritional situation of an ambulatory population, from every area of Spanish geography (n = 22007), using the questionnaire MNA. Every subject surveyed was 65 or more years old when the test was done. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences between subjects with a CC or= 31 cm, both men and women, in weight, height, body mass index (BMI), MNA total score and undernutrition classification. On the other hand, it was found that those elders with lower CC showed a higher undernutrition risk, both men and women, in every age range studied. CONCLUSIONS: It does exit an association between CC of Spanish subjects of 65 or more years old and the risk of developing undernutrition. That association is similar among men and women, and in all age ranges

    Impact of global and subjective mini nutritional assessment (MNA) questions on the evaluation of the nutritional status: The role of gender and age

    Undernutrition is a quite common condition in the elderly, often identified using the mini nutritional assessment (MNA) test. The aim of this research was to study the independent value of the global and the subjective MNA questions to predict the undernutrition according to the full MNA score, and to analyze the influence of gender and age on such items. A total of 22,007 Spanish people 65 years of age or older were evaluated using the MNA test. These data were obtained by trained community pharmacists by using receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves. About 4.3% of the studied population were classified as undernourished according to the full MNA test. The subjective subscore (two questions) presented better predictive value than the global one (six questions). Indeed, 99.5% of subjects detected as well nourished using the MNA test were also correctly classified using the two subjective questions. In the present study, it was identified that the two subjective MNA questions can be an efficient tool for a quick screening to rule out non undernourished subjects

    Enhancement of quality of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) flesh incorporating barley on diet without negative effect on rearing parameters

    [EN] Barley concentrations ranging from 0 to 32% (0B, 40B, 80B, 160B, and 319B) were incorporated into rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) diets. The experiment started with an initial average fish weight of 127.72 +/- 5.65 g and finished when they reached commercial weight (final weight between 312 and 330 g) after 84 days. The inclusion of barley in the diets did not show a significant effect on growth and biometric parameters, fat and carbohydrate digestibilities; however, protein digestibility decreased significantly with the incorporation of barley on diets. Glucose levels increased significantly with barley concentration in the diet, and lactate and cortisol levels were also significantly affected after a stress period regardless of the diet. Meat quality was influenced as well by barley concentration. Lower water activity values and an enhancement in textural and color properties were observed in fish fed with the diet containing the highest barley concentration. Trout fed feed with higher concentrations of barley (160B) showed lower lipid oxidation levels than those fed with lower concentrations (control and 40B). The sensory panel found that fish fed with diets higher than 8% in barley content (80B) exhibited a brighter red color in the gills and a better texture; also, meat color became redder with a higher barley inclusion (160B and 319B), being all these sensory parameters correlated with fish freshness. Thus, results indicate that barley can be substituted for wheat fraction without any detrimental effect on production efficiency and enhancing fish quality.This work has been co-funded with FEDER and INIA funds.     Expression of proadrenomedullin derived peptides in the mammalian pituitary: co-localization of follicle stimulating hormone and proadrenomedullin N-20 terminal peptide-like peptide in the same secretory granules of the gonadotropes

    Expression of proadrenomedullin-derived peptides in the rat, cow and human pituitary was studied by a variety of techniques. Immunocytochemical detection showed a widespread expression of adrenomedullin peptide in the adenohypophysis and the neural lobe, with low expression in the intermediate pituitary. Proadrenomedullin N-20 terminal peptide (PAMP)-immunoreactivity was also present in the anterior pituitary but showed a more marked heterogeneous distribution, with cells going from very strong to negative immunostaining. Lower levels of PAMP were found in the neural lobe. Interestingly, the distribution of adrenomedullin and PAMP immunoreactivity in the anterior pituitary did not completely overlap. In the present study, we concentrated our efforts to determine which cell type of the adenohypophysis expresses PAMP. Paraffin and semithin serial sections immunostained for PAMP and the classical pituitary hormones revealed that a subpopulation of the gonadotropes expresses high levels of PAMP-immunoreactive material. Ultrastructural analysis clearly showed PAMP-immunoreactivity in the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)-containing large secretory granules of the gonadotropes, suggesting simultaneous secretion of PAMP and FSH by this cell type. Three mouse adenohypophysis-derived cell lines (AtT20, GH3, and alphaT3-1 derived from corticotropes, lacto/somatotropes and gonadotropes, respectively) were also analysed and showed expression of both proadrenomedullin-derived peptides and their mRNA. Functional studies in these three cell lines showed that neither adrenomedullin nor PAMP was able to stimulate cAMP production in our experimental conditions. Taken together, our results support that proadrenomedullin derived peptides are expressed in the pituitary in cell-specific and not overlapping patterns, that could be explained by differences in postranslational processing. Our data showing costorage of PAMP and FSH in the same secretory granules open a way by which PAMP could be involved in the control of reproductive physiology in a coordinated manner with FSH
