Characterization of Plum Procyanidins by Thiolytic Depolymerization
The phenolic compounds of ?Green Gage? (GG) plums (Prunus domestica L.), ?Rainha Cla?udia Verde?, from a ?protected designation of origin? (PDO), in Portugal, were quantified in both flesh and skin tissues of plums collected in two different orchards (GG-V and GG-C). Analyzes of phenolic compounds were also performed on another GG European plum obtained in France (GG-F) and two other French plums, ?Mirabelle? (M) and ?Golden Japan? (GJ). Thiolysis was used for the first time in the analysis of plum phenolic compounds. This methodology showed that the flesh and skin contain a large proportion of flavan-3-ols, which account, respectively, for 92 and 85% in GJ, 61 and 44% in GG-V, 62 and 48% in GG-C, 54 and 27% in M, and 45 and 37% in GG-F. Terminal units of procyanidins observed in plums are mainly (+)-catechin (54?77% of all terminal units in flesh and 57?81% in skin). The GJ plums showed a phenolic composition different from all of the others, with a lower content of chlorogenic acid isomers and the presence of A-type procyanidins as dimers and terminal residues of polymerized forms. The average degree of polymerization (DPn) of plum procyanidins was higher in the flesh (5?9 units) than in the skin (4?6 units). Procyanidin B7 was observed in the flesh of all GG plums and in the skin of the Portuguese ones. Principal component analysis of the phenolic composition of the flesh and skin of these plums obtained after thiolysis allowed their distinction according to the variety and origin, opening the possibility of the use of phenolic composition for variety/origin identification
Decaying shock studies of phase transitions in MgOSiO2 systems: implications for the Super-Earths interiors
We report an experimental study of the phase diagrams of periclase (MgO),
enstatite (MgSiO3) and forsterite (Mg2SiO4) at high pressures. We investigated
with laser driven decaying shocks the pressure/temperature curves of MgO,
MgSiO3 and Mg2SiO4 between 0.2-1.2 TPa, 0.12-0.5 TPa and 0.2-0.85 TPa
respectively. A melting signature has been observed in MgO at 0.47 TPa and 9860
K, while no phase changes were observed neither in MgSiO3 nor in Mg2SiO4. An
increasing of reflectivity of MgO, MgSiO3 and Mg2SiO4 liquids have been
detected at 0.55 TPa -12 760 K, 0.15 TPa - 7540 K, 0.2 TPa - 5800 K,
respectively. In contrast to SiO2, melting and metallization of these compounds
do not coincide implying the presence of poor electrically conducting liquids
close to the melting lines. This has important implications for the generation
of dynamos in Super-earths mantles
Multiple plasmon resonances in naturally-occurring multiwall nanotubes: infrared spectra of chrysotile asbestos
Chrysotile asbestos is formed by densely packed bundles of multiwall hollow
nanotubes. Each wall in the nanotubes is a cylindrically wrapped layer of . We show by experiment and theory that the infrared spectrum
of chrysotile presents multiple plasmon resonances in the Si-O stretching
bands. These collective charge excitations are universal features of the
nanotubes that are obtained by cylindrically wrapping an anisotropic material.
The multiple plasmons can be observed if the width of the resonances is
sufficiently small as in chrysotile.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. Revtex4 compuscript. Misprint in Eq.(6) correcte
Surface Magnetization of Aperiodic Ising Systems: a Comparative Study of the Bond and Site Problems
We investigate the influence of aperiodic perturbations on the critical
behaviour at a second order phase transition. The bond and site problems are
compared for layered systems and aperiodic sequences generated through
substitution. In the bond problem, the interactions between the layers are
distributed according to an aperiodic sequence whereas in the site problem, the
layers themselves follow the sequence. A relevance-irrelevance criterion
introduced by Luck for the bond problem is extended to discuss the site
problem. It involves a wandering exponent for pairs, which can be larger than
the one considered before in the bond problem. The surface magnetization of the
layered two-dimensional Ising model is obtained, in the extreme anisotropic
limit, for the period-doubling and Thue-Morse sequences.Comment: 19 pages, Plain TeX, IOP macros + epsf, 6 postscript figures, minor

Multiexcitons confined within a sub-excitonic volume: Spectroscopic and dynamical signatures of neutral and charged biexcitons in ultrasmall semiconductor nanocrystals
The use of ultrafast gating techniques allows us to resolve both spectrally
and temporally the emission from short-lived neutral and negatively charged
biexcitons in ultrasmall (sub-10 nm) CdSe nanocrystals (nanocrystal quantum
dots). Because of forced overlap of electronic wave functions and reduced
dielectric screening, these states are characterized by giant interaction
energies of tens (neutral biexcitons) to hundreds (charged biexcitons) of meV.
Both types of biexcitons show extremely short lifetimes (from sub-100
picoseconds to sub-picosecond time scales) that rapidly shorten with decreasing
nanocrystal size. These ultrafast relaxation dynamics are explained in terms of
highly efficient nonradiative Auger recombination.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Effect of the Surface on the Electron Quantum Size Levels and Electron g-Factor in Spherical Semiconductor Nanocrystals
The structure of the electron quantum size levels in spherical nanocrystals
is studied in the framework of an eight--band effective mass model at zero and
weak magnetic fields. The effect of the nanocrystal surface is modeled through
the boundary condition imposed on the envelope wave function at the surface. We
show that the spin--orbit splitting of the valence band leads to the
surface--induced spin--orbit splitting of the excited conduction band states
and to the additional surface--induced magnetic moment for electrons in bare
nanocrystals. This additional magnetic moment manifests itself in a nonzero
surface contribution to the linear Zeeman splitting of all quantum size energy
levels including the ground 1S electron state. The fitting of the size
dependence of the ground state electron g factor in CdSe nanocrystals has
allowed us to determine the appropriate surface parameter of the boundary
conditions. The structure of the excited electron states is considered in the
limits of weak and strong magnetic fields.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Evolution of density perturbations in a realistic universe
Prompted by the recent more precise determination of the basic cosmological
parameters and growing evidence that the matter-energy content of the universe
is now dominated by dark energy and dark matter we present the general solution
of the equation that describes the evolution of density perturbations in the
linear approximation. It turns out that as in the standard CDM model the
density perturbations grow very slowly during the radiation dominated epoch and
their amplitude increases by a factor of about 4000 in the matter and later
dark energy dominated epoch of expansion of the universe.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure
