Androgen deprivation therapy (castration therapy) and pedophilia: What's new

Andrology is a constantly evolving discipline, embracing social problems like pedophilia and its pharmacological treatment. With regard to chemical castration, the andrologist may perform an important role as part of a team of specialists. At present, no knowledge is available regarding hormonal, chromosomal or genetic alterations involved in pedophilia. International legislation primarily aims to defend childhood, but does not provide for compulsory treatment. We reviewed international literature that, at present, only comprises a few reports on research concerning androgen deprivation. Most of these refer to the use of leuprolide acetate, rather than medroxyprogesterone and cyproterone acetate, which present a larger number of side effects. Current opinions on chemical castration for pedophilia are discordant. Some surveys confirm that therapy reduces sexual thoughts and fantasies, especially in recidivism. On the other hand, some authors report that chemical castration does not modify the pedophile's personality. In our opinion, once existing legislation has changed, andrologists could play a significant role in the selection of patients to receive androgen deprivation therapy, due in part to their knowledge about its action and side effects

Monitoring alkylphenols in water using the polar organic chemical integrative sampler (POCIS): determining sampling rates via the extraction of PES membranes and Oasis beads

Polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS) have previously been used to monitor alkylphenol (AP) contamination in water and produced water. However, only the sorbent receiving phase of the POCIS (Oasis beads) is traditionally analyzed, thus limiting the use of POCIS for monitoring a range of APs with varying hydrophobicity. Here a “pharmaceutical” POCIS was calibrated in the laboratory using a static renewal setup for APs (from 2-ethylphenol to 4-n-nonylphenol) with varying hydrophobicity (log Kow between 2.47 and 5.76). The POCIS sampler was calibrated over its 28 day integrative regime and sampling rates (Rs) were determined. Uptake was shown to be a function of AP hydrophobicity where compounds with log Kow < 4 were preferentially accumulated in Oasis beads, and compounds with log Kow > 5 were preferentially accumulated in the PES membranes. A lag phase (over a 24 h period) before uptake in to the PES membranes occurred was evident. This work demonstrates that the analysis of both POCIS phases is vital in order to correctly determine environmentally relevant concentrations owing to the fact that for APs with log Kow ≤ 4 uptake, to the PES membranes and the Oasis beads, involves different processes compared to APs with log Kow ≥ 4. The extraction of both the POCIS matrices is thus recommended in order to assess the concentration of hydrophobic APs (log Kow ≥ 4), as well as hydrophilic APs, most effectively. © 2017 Elsevier Lt

Biochar from Pine Wood, Rice Husks and Iron-Eupatorium Shrubs for Remediation Applications: Surface Characterization and Experimental Tests for Trichloroethylene Removal

Nowadays porous materials from organic waste, i.e., Biochar (BC), are receiving increased attention for environmental applications. This study adds information on three BCs that have undergone a number of studies in recent years. A Biochar from pine wood, one from rice husk and one from Eupatorium shrubs enriched with Iron, labelled as PWBC, RHBC and EuFeBC respectively, are evaluated for Trichloroethylene (TCE) removal from aqueous solution. Physical-chemical description is performed by SEM-EDS and BET analysis. The decrease of TCE over time follows a pseudo-second order kinetics with increased removal by the PWBC. Freundlich and Langmuir models well fit equilibrium test data. The optimized values of the maximum adsorbed amount, qmax (mg g−1), follows this order 109.41 PWBC > 30.35 EuFeBC > 21.00 RHBC. Fixed-bed columns are also carried out. Best performance is again achieved by PWBC, which operates for a higher number of pore volume, followed by EuFeBC and RHBC. Continuous testing confirms batch studies and makes it possible to evaluate the workability of materials in configurations closer to reality. Results are promising for potential environmental application. In particular, the characterization of several classes of contaminants opens the doors to possible uses in mixed contamination case

DIVERSITY OF TREES AND SHRUBS ON SPECIAL-PURPOSE FOREST

The beauty of KHDTK (Special-purpose forest) in Banten province saves a lot of biodiversities that must be protected because it is a source of wealth that supports human life towards prosperity. The research objective was to determine the diversity of trees and shrubs and to identify the types of plants (trees and shrubs) in the Forest Area with Special Purpose in Carita. This research was carried out in Sukarame Village, Carita District, Pandeglang Regency, Banten. The method used in this study is descriptive research. Technique sampling uses the Line transect method. The results showed that the tree Shannon-Weaver (H') Diversity index at KHDTK in Carita was 0.600 in the low category. Bush Shannon-Weaver (H) Diversity Index at Carita KHDTK is 0.692 in the low category. Evenness Index (E) at the KHDTK in Carita is 0.204 in the (low) category. The Evenness Index (E) in the Carita KHDTK was 0.33 in the low category. Further research is needed to be able to find diversity in the KHDTK in Carita and to complement references about KHDTK in Carita

Pengaruh Model Cooperative Learning Tipe Talking Stick Terhadap Hasil Belajar Tematik

The problem of this research was the students results of thematic learning was still low. The aims of this study was to find out the effect of cooperative learning type talking stick model implementation toward  the students result of thematic learning. The method of this research was experimental research which used nonequivalent control group design. The instrument that used by researcher were test and sheet of observation. The result shows there is a significant effect of the cooperative learning type talking stick model implementation toward the students result of thematic learning at the fourth grade students of SD Negeri 1 Labuhan Dalam Bandar Lampung.  Masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah masih rendahnya hasil belajar tematik peserta didik di SD Negeri 1 Labuhan Dalam. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pengaruh penerapan model cooperative learning tipe talking stick terhadap hasil belajar tematik peserta didik. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimen dengan menggunakan desain nonequivalent control group design. Instrumen yang digunakan peneliti adalah tes dan lembar observasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ada pengaruh yang signifikan dalam penerapan model cooperative learning tipe talking stick terhadap hasil belajar tematik peserta didik kelas IV SD Negeri 1 Labuhan Dalam Bandar Lampung.Kata kunci : model cooperative learning tipe talking stick, hasil belajar temati

Influence of the Vertex Region on Spin Dynamics in Artificial Kagome Spin Ice

We present experimental and theoretical studies of spin-wave mode dynamics in artificial kagome spin ice vertices made of three identical 15-nm thick elongated Ni80Fe20 nanoislands (macrospins). We consider several possible configurations, from completely disjointed macrospins (full dipolar interelement interactions) to fully jointed macrospins (full dipolar-exchange interactions). Using angular-resolved magnetic field dependent broadband ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), we demonstrate the occurrence of a mode localized in the vertex region as indicated by the distinct behavior of the FMR spectra at different angles and configurations. Theoretical calculations using micromagnetic simulations support the existence, origin, and behavior of this mode by interpreting it as a localized, quasi-uniform Kittel mode. Our findings pave the way for designing the most appropriate network consisting of ferromagnetic nanomagnets for specific application purposes in magnonics
