Supersymmetry and Dual String Solitons
We present new classes of string-like soliton solutions in (; ),
(; ) and (; ) heterotic string theory. Connections are made
between the solution-generating subgroup of the -duality group of the
compactification and the number of spacetime supersymmetries broken. Analogous
solutions are also noted in (; ) compactifications, where a
different form of supersymmetry breaking arises.Comment: 13 pages, harvmac, (missing references added
String Solitons
We review the status of solitons in superstring theory, with a view to
understanding the strong coupling regime. These {\it solitonic} solutions are
non-singular field configurations which solve the empty-space low-energy field
equations (generalized, whenever possible, to all orders in ), carry a
non-vanishing topological "magnetic" charge and are stabilized by a topological
conservation law. They are compared and contrasted with the {\it elementary}
solutions which are singular solutions of the field equations with a
-model source term and carry a non-vanishing Noether "electric" charge.
In both cases, the solutions of most interest are those which preserve half the
spacetime supersymmetries and saturate a Bogomol'nyi bound. They typically
arise as the extreme mass=charge limit of more general two-parameter solutions
with event horizons. We also describe the theory {\it dual} to the fundamental
string for which the roles of elementary and soliton solutions are
interchanged. In ten spacetime dimensions, this dual theory is a superfivebrane
and this gives rise to a string/fivebrane duality conjecture according to which
the fivebrane may be regarded as fundamental in its own right, with the
strongly coupled string corresponding to the weakly coupled fivebrane and
vice-versa. After compactification to four spacetime dimensions, the fivebrane
appears as a magnetic monopole or a dual string according as it wraps around
five or four of the compactified dimensions. This gives rise to a
four-dimensional string/string duality conjecture which subsumes a
Montonen-Olive type duality in that the magnetic monopoles of the fundamental
string correspond to the electric winding states of the dual string. This leads
to a {\it duality of dualities} whereby under string/string duality the the
strong/weak coupling -duality trades places with the minimum/maximum length
-duality. Since these magnetic monopoles are extreme black holes, a
prediction of -duality is that the corresponding electric massive states of
the fundamental string are also extreme black holes.Comment: 150 pages, TeX, submitted to Physics Reports, 3 figures available on

Veneziano Amplitude for Winding Strings
String configurations with nonzero winding number describe soliton string
states. We compute the Veneziano amplitude for the scattering of arbitrary
winding states and show that in the large radius limit the strings always
scatter trivially and with no change in the individual winding numbers of the
strings. In this limit, then, these states scatter as true solitons.Comment: 7 page
Learning styles and the selection of majors among Lebanese youth
Learning style preferences and selection of university major data were
obtained from a sample of 199 Lebanese high school graduates. These measures and
gender were used to assess the relation between the selection of major and learning
style preferences. The main assumption was that students who believe they have
competencies or ability in a certain area would make choices to pursue activities in
these areas in order to develop further these competencies (Holland, 1973). The
perceptual and biological development of students’ auditory, visual, tactual and
kinesthetic senses appeared to be a key factor in their way of acquiring information.
Thus, fitting learning preferences to the specific content knowledge required is with
little doubt a very important issue that needs to be addressed by research. This study
found that learning style preferences were not homogeneous and were not
homogenously distributed across majors. Overall, students indicated a preference
for the visual and active learning styles.Females, however, were higher than males
on both reflective and verbal styles. Chi-square analyses indicated that each of
the six general major areas had distinct learning style attribute profiles that
distinguished them from the others. Learning style profiles, therefore, may
contribute positively to student selection processes for different majors.peer-reviewe
A Lyapunov Based Approach to Enchance Wind Turbine Stability
This paper introduces a nonlinear control of a wind turbine based on a Double Feed Induction Generator. The Rotor Side converter is controlled by using field oriented control and Backstepping strategy to enhance the dynamic stability response. The Grid Side converter is controlled by a sliding mode. These methods aim to increase dynamic system stability for variable wind speed. Hence, The Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) is studied in order to illustrate its behavior in case of severe disturbance, and its dynamic response in grid connected mode for variable speed wind operation. The model is presented and simulated under Matlab/ Simulink
Practices and Beliefs Relating to Authentic Assessment of Kindergarten Teachers in the Suburbs of Jerusalem
This study aimed at investigating kindergarten teachers’ practices and beliefs relating to authentic assessment. The
study also aimed at investigating differences in teachers’ practices and beliefs based on level of education, study
major, and length of experience. The sample of the study consisted of (92) teachers working in kindergartens in
the suburbs of Jerusalem. Two questionnaires were developed and implemented to collect the data of the study. In
addition, individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 teachers from the sample of the study.
Content analysis of some kindergarten documents was also used. The results showed that worksheets were the
main method used to assess children learning, while project-based assessment was not used at all. In addition, the
results showed significant differences in the teachers’ utilization of authentic assessment methods relating to level
of education and study major, but there were no differences relating to the length of the teachers teaching
experience. The teachers showed a strong belief in the importance of authentic assessment methods. The results of
the interviews and content analysis supported the findings of the questionnaires. The study concluded a number of
recommendations for future research, teacher educators and kindergarten principals
