High Harmonic Generation in SF: Raman-excited Vibrational Quantum Beats
In a recent experiment (N. Wagner et al., PNAS v103, p13279) on SF, a
high-harmonic generating laser pulse is preceded by a pump pulse which
stimulates Raman-active modes in the molecule. Varying the time delay between
the two pulses modulates high harmonic intensity, with frequencies equal to the
vibration frequencies of the Raman-active modes. We propose an explanation of
this modulation as a quantum interference between competing pathways that occur
via adjacent vibrational states of the molecule. The Raman and high harmonic
processes act as beamsplitters, producing vibrational quantum beats among the
Raman-active vibrational modes that are excited by the first pulse. We
introduce a rigorous treatment of the electron-ion recombination process and
the effect of the ionic Coulomb field in the electron propagation outside the
molecule, improving over the widely-used three-step model.Comment: submitted to PR
Shape Isomerism at N = 40: Discovery of a Proton Intruder in 67Co
The nuclear structure of 67Co has been investigated through 67Fe beta-decay.
The 67Fe isotopes were produced at the LISOL facility in proton-induced fission
of 238U and selected using resonant laser ionization combined with mass
separation. The application of a new correlation technique unambiguously
revealed a 496(33) ms isomeric state in 67Co at an unexpected low energy of 492
keV. A 67Co level scheme has been deduced. Proposed spin and parities suggest a
spherical (7/2-) 67Co ground state and a deformed first excited (1/2-) state at
492 keV, interpreted as a proton 1p-2h prolate intruder state.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, preprint submitted to Physical Review Letter

Mesothelial Cell HIF1 alpha Expression Is Metabolically Downregulated by Metformin to Prevent Oncogenic Tumor-Stromal Crosstalk
The tumor microenvironment (TME) plays a pivotal role in cancer progression, and, in ovarian cancer (OvCa), the primary TME is the omentum. Here, we show that the diabetes drug metformin alters mesothelial cells in the omental microenvironment. Metformin interrupts bidirectional signaling between tumor and mesothelial cells by blocking OvCa cell TGF-beta signaling and mesothelial cell production of CCL2 and IL-8. Inhibition of tumor-stromal crosstalk by metformin is caused by the reduced expression of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) enzyme succinyl CoA ligase (SUCLG2). Through repressing this TCA enzyme and its metabolite, succinate, metformin activated prolyl hydroxylases (PHDs), resulting in the degradation of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF1 alpha) in mesothelial cells. Disruption of HIF1 alpha-driven IL-8 signaling in mesothelial cells by metformin results in reduced OvCa invasion in an organotypic 3D model. These findings indicate that tumor-promoting signaling between mesothelial and OvCa cells in the TME can be targeted using metformin
Nature of yrast excitations near N=40: Level structure of Ni-67
Excited states in Ni-67 were populated in deep-inelastic reactions of a Ni-64
beam at 430 MeV on a thick U-238 target. A level scheme built on the previously
known 13 micro-s isomer has been delineated up to an excitation energy of ~5.3
MeV and a tentative spin and parity of (21/2-). Shell model calculations have
been carried out using two effective interactions in the f5/2pg9/2 model space
with a Ni-56 core. Satisfactory agreement between experiment and theory is
achieved for the measured transition energies and branching ratios. The
calculations indicate that the yrast states are associated with rather complex
configurations, herewith demonstrating the relative weakness of the N=40
subshell gap and the importance of multi particle-hole excitations involving
the g9/2 neutron orbital.Comment: Accepted by Physical Review
Crossover between Thermally Assisted and Pure Quantum Tunneling in Molecular Magnet Mn12-Acetate
The crossover between thermally assisted and pure quantum tunneling has been
studied in single crystals of high spin (S=10) uniaxial molecular magnet Mn12
using micro-Hall-effect magnetometry. Magnetic hysteresis and relaxation
experiments have been used to investigate the energy levels that determine the
magnetization reversal as a function of magnetic field and temperature. These
experiments demonstrate that the crossover occurs in a narrow (0.1 K) or broad
(1 K) temperature interval depending on the magnitude of the field transverse
to the anisotropy axis.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Explorations in anatomy: the remains from Royal London Hospital
This paper considers the faunal remains from recent excavations at the Royal London Hospital. The remains date to the beginning of the 19th century and offer an insight into the life of the hospital's patients and practices of the attached medical school. Many of the animal remains consist of partially dissected skeletons, including the unique finds of Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni) and Cercopithecus monkey. The hospital diet and developments in comparative anatomy are discussed by integrating the results with documentary research. They show that zooarchaeological study of later post-medieval material can significantly enhance our understanding of the exploitation of animals in this perio
Orbit structure and (reversing) symmetries of toral endomorphisms on rational lattices
We study various aspects of the dynamics induced by integer matrices on the
invariant rational lattices of the torus in dimension 2 and greater. Firstly,
we investigate the orbit structure when the toral endomorphism is not
invertible on the lattice, characterising the pretails of eventually periodic
orbits. Next we study the nature of the symmetries and reversing symmetries of
toral automorphisms on a given lattice, which has particular relevance to
(quantum) cat maps.Comment: 29 pages, 3 figure
