    Measuring consumers' understanding of green marketing objective and concept in relation to environmental protection

    Green marketing has been an increasingly important element toward the practice of environmental protection. A term coined by marketing gurus, it is a structured topic, essentially offered in academic institutions. However, not every consumer enrols in such courses during their academic years. While some may gain their knowledge academically, others may acquire it through daily interactions with family members, friends, colleagues, business associations, or through the mass or social media. It is believed that the meaning and purpose of green marketing did not reach the general public, questioning the capability of green marketing in becoming a key factor in encouraging consumers to protect the environment. The lack of understanding the objective and concept of green marketing among consumers clearly reflect the unfavourable behaviour and support towards environmental protection. Due to this limitation, the intent of this study is to investigate the level of consumers’ understanding of green marketing objective and concepts through green marketing tools, as well as identify the common medium that contribute to their understanding. This study is also conducted to confirm the measurement items used to examine consumers’ understanding of green marketing particularly its objective and concepts, and tools. Self-constructed survey questionnaire was distributed to consumers, and analysed using a descriptive statistical and factor analysis. As expected, results indicated that consumers’ understanding about protecting the environment is not driven by green marketing objective and concept, but rather from daily interactions with their family members and within the society they are in

    Optical properties of diamond like carbon films prepared by DC-PECVD

    Diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films were deposited at different substrate temperatures using methane and hydrogen gas in DC-PECVD at 2x10-1Torr. From the light transmission using UV-VIS spectroscopy it was found that the optical transition had changed from allowed indirect transition to allowed direct transition as the substrate temperature increased. The Optical gap increased with temperature, highest of 3.034 eV was observed at 573 K, beyond which it dropped. Colour of the film changed from light brownish to a colourless transparent film in the higher temperature. The Urbach energy decreased from 1.25 eV to 0.75 eV with increasing substrate temperature till 573 K and a slight increase after it. This trend is attributed to change in sp3/sp2 ratio or change in structure. The cluster size decreases with temperature, resulting in larger band gap and the structure more ordered. Similar pattern is also witnessed in the emission spectrum of the photoluminescence

    Characterization of microcrystalline cellulose isolated through mechanochemical method

    Mechanochemical process, which involves simultaneous ultrasound and alkali treatment, has been used to isolatemicrocrystalline cellulose (MCC) from raw oil palm empty fruit bunch (REFB) fibre. Three steps have been used to preparethe MCC, namely removal of lignin, removal of hemicellulose and finally production of MCC. The crystallinity index inMCC is found to be 81% which is 54% higher than that of REFB and 45% higher than that of cellulose. Besidescrystallinity, the crystal size (28.03Å) of MCC is also enhanced noticeably by 53% as compared to the REFB and 28% ascompared to cellulose. The degradation temperature, and the residue content reveal the excellent thermal stability of MCCextracted through this mechanochemical technique

    Wideband millimeter-wave substrate integrated waveguide cavity-backed antenna for satellites communications

    This paper presents a new type of wideband waveguide (SIW) cavity-backed patch antenna for millimeter wave (mmW). The antenna proposed applies to applications of 31-36 GHz Ka-band such as satellites communications. The SIW is intended with settings for particular slots. The antenna is constructed on Rogers RT5880 (lossy) with 2.2 dielectric constant, l.27 mm thickness, and 0.0009 loss tangent. It is simulated in the programming of computer simulation technology (CST) Microwave Studio. The simulated results show that the SIW antenna resonates across 31 to 36 GHz bands, which means that this new antenna covers all applications within this range. The reflection coefficients in targeting range are below 10 dB. The antenna achieves good efficiency and gain with 80% and 8.87 dBi respectively

    Substrate integrated waveguide cavity backed frequency reconfigurable antenna for cognitive radio applies to internet of things applications

    In this article, a new multiband frequency reconfigurable substrate integrated waveguide cavity slot antenna was designed using Computer Simulation Technology software tool for addressing the specific design challenges posed by the internet of things (IoT) based cognitive radio networks. Reconfiguration of frequency bands is achieved using PIN diodes. The antenna resonated at 2.624, 2.664, 2.720, 2.752, 4.304, 4.532, 4.556, 5.236, 5.304, 5.368, 5.332, and 5.392 GHz. The resonant frequency capability and radiation performance are demonstrated by both simulations and measurements. The simulated and measured results were in agreement. The higher efficiency, gain and average bandwidth obtained are 90%, 8.2 dBi and 65 MHz, respectively. The compactness, integrity, reliability, and performance at various operating frequencies make the proposed antenna a good candidate for IoT applications

    Performance of Kaolin Clay on hot-mix asphalt properties

    Kaolin clay is a waste product with numerous applications in construction. This study explored the addition effect of kaolin clay on the properties of hot-mix asphalt. Four replacement levels of kaolin clay were considered by weight of binder, i.e., 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%. The performance of kaolin clay on the hot-mix asphalt was evaluated through a Marshall stability and flow test, including stiffness, density, voids in total mix, and voids in filled with asphalt. Test results showed that kaolin clay can be satisfactorily used as filler replacement material to increase the asphalt mixture properties. Generally, asphaltic concrete with 2% kaolin clay replacement level exhibits excellent performance with good stability and stiffness

    An application of hybrid swarm intelligence algorithms for dengue outbreak prediction

    Dengue fever is a hazardous infectious disease which is channeled by Aedes mosquito. A serious infection of dengue may lead to a potentially lethal complication, known as severe dengue, which includes Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever and shock syndrome. In recent decades, this disease becomes a global burden which has grown dramatically around the world. Unfortunately, until today, a specific anti-viral medicine for dengue is still undiscovered. Therefore, it is a huge responsibility to the community in finding an effective solution to prevent a widespread of this disease in advance. Concerning this matter, this study presents an application of hybrid Swarm Intelligence (SI) algorithms for a dengue outbreak prediction. For simulation purposes, a monthly dengue cases time series data in the area of Indonesia were employed, which are fed to four hybrid SI algorithms, namely Moth Flame Optimization (MFO), Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), Firefly Algorithm (FA) and Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm. These algorithms are individually hybrid with Least Squares Support Vector Machines. Guided by Mean Square Error (MSE) and Root Mean Square Percentage Error (RMSPE), findings of the study indicate that the identified hybrid algorithms were able to produce competitive result, with a slightly favor to ABCLSSVM

    Optimization of a Continuous Hybrid Impeller Mixer via Computational Fluid Dynamics

    This paper presents the preliminary steps required for conducting experiments to obtain the optimal operating conditions of a hybrid impeller mixer and to determine the residence time distribution (RTD) using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In this paper, impeller speed and clearance parameters are examined. The hybrid impeller mixer consists of a single Rushton turbine mounted above a single pitched blade turbine (PBT). Four impeller speeds, 50, 100, 150, and 200 rpm, and four impeller clearances, 25, 50, 75, and 100 mm, were the operation variables used in this study. CFD was utilized to initially screen the parameter ranges to reduce the number of actual experiments needed. Afterward, the residence time distribution (RTD) was determined using the respective parameters. Finally, the Fluent-predicted RTD and the experimentally measured RTD were compared. The CFD investigations revealed that an impeller speed of 50 rpm and an impeller clearance of 25 mm were not viable for experimental investigations and were thus eliminated from further analyses. The determination of RTD using a k-ε turbulence model was performed using CFD techniques. The multiple reference frame (MRF) was implemented and a steady state was initially achieved followed by a transient condition for RTD determination

    Nanoparticle in asphalt binder: a state-of-the-art review

    Increasing traffic volumes and the rising cost of bitumen making it necessary to improve the performance of asphalt binder through bitumen modification. Various types of modifiers have been employed as bitumen binders in order to improve the bitumen mixture, particularly with regard to its resistance to aging, cracks due to fatigue and thermal conditions, moisture-induced damage and permanent deformation. This review study summarizes the performance of nanoparticles as an asphalt modifier. Several relevant literatures were reviewed, which related to the matter associated with nanomaterials such as nano-silica, carbon nano-tubes and nano-titanium dioxide. Recent studies showed that the utilisation of nanoparticle gave great benefits in many ways.For instance, nano kaolin as a mineral clay promises non-hazardous effects to road users. This can result in a healthy environment and help towards increasing the application of green technology road construction
