Modelling the trajectory of the corpses of mountaineers who disappeared in 1926 on Aletschgletscher, Switzerland
In this paper we reconstruct the space–time trajectory beneath the surface of Aletschgletscher, Switzerland, of the corpses of three mountaineers that disappeared in March 1926 and reappeared at the glacier surface in June 2012. Our method integrates the time-dependent velocity field of an existing full-Stokes glacier model, starting at the point where the corpses were found at the glacier surface. Our main result is that we were able to localize the immersion location where the brothers presumably died. As a second result, the upstream end point of the computed trajectory emerges very close to the glacier surface in 1926, giving a new and global validation of the glacier model in space and time. Testing the sensitivity of the immersion location obtained with respect to the model and other uncertainties indicates an area of 0.6% of the entire glacier area where the accident could have occurred. Our result suggests that death was not caused by an avalanche or a fall into a crevasse; instead, it is likely that the mountaineers became disoriented in prolonged severe weather conditions and froze to death
Analyses spectroscopiques du liquide céphalo-rachidien de rat en ex vivo et du noyau du raphé dorsal in vivo
Les propriétés d'absorption et de fluorescence du liquide céphalo-rachidien (LCR) ponctionné au niveau de la cisterna magna du rat, sont analysées puis comparées à l'émission mesurée in situ dans le noyau du raphe dorsal du rat libre de tous mouvements. Les mesures de fluorescence en ex vivo du LCR et in vivo du noyau raphé dorsal, ont été réalisées par la mise en œuvre d'un microcapteur à fibre optique (FOCS). La fluorescence mesurée in vivo sous excitation à 337 nm, présente 2 pics d'émission situés vers 410 et 460 nm. Les spectres d'absorption, d'émission en fluorescence statique et en fluorescence induite par laser sont rapportés. Avec des domaines de longueur d'onde d'excitation de 300-315 nm, 320-355 nm et 360-470 nm, les spectres d'émission du LCR en ex vivo montrent respectivement des pics centrés vers 340 nm, 390 nm et 530 nm. Malgré les limites liées aux différences de localisation anatomique, ces approches ainsi que celles de la littérature permettent de suggérer que le signal de fluorescence mesuré in vivo à 460nm pourrait dépendre pour une grande partie du NADH intracellulaire
Excited state hydrogen transfer dynamics in substituted phenols and their complexes with ammonia: π π * -π σ*energy gap propensity and ortho-substitution effect
Lifetimes of the first electronic excited state (S1) of fluorine and methyl (o-, m-, and p-) substituted phenols and their complexes with one ammonia molecule have been measured for the 00 transition and for the intermolecular stretching σ1 levels in complexes using picosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. Excitation energies to the S1 (π π *) and S2 (π σ*) states are obtained by quantum chemical calculations at the MP2 and CC2 level using the aug-cc-pVDZ basis set for the ground-state and the S1 optimized geometries. The observed lifetimes and the energy gaps between the π π * and π σ* states show a good correlation, the lifetime being shorter for a smaller energy gap. This propensity suggests that the major dynamics in the excited state concerns an excited state hydrogen detachment or transfer (ESHD/T) promoted directly by a S1 / S2 conical intersection, rather than via internal conversion to the ground-state. A specific shortening of lifetime is found in the o-fluorophenol-ammonia complex and explained in terms of the vibronic coupling between the π π * and π σ* states occurring through the out-of-plane distortion of the C-F bond.Fil: Pino, Gustavo Ariel. Photo-fragmentation spectroscopy of benzylium and 1-phenylethyl cations
The electronic spectra of cold benzylium (C6H5-CH2+) and 1-phenylethyl
(C6H5-CH-CH3+)cations have been recorded via photofragment spectroscopy.
Benzylium and 1-phenylethyl cations produced from electrosprayed benzylamine
and phenylethylamine solutions, respectively, were stored in a cryogenically
cooled quadrupole ion trap and photodissociated by an OPO laser, scanned in
parts of the UV and visible regions (600-225 nm). The electronic states and
active vibrational modes of the benzylium and 1-phenylethyl cations as well as
those of their tropylium or methyl tropylium isomers have been calculated with
ab initio methods for comparison with the spectra observed. Sharp vibrational
progressions are observed in the visible region while the absorption features
are much broader in the UV. The visible spectrum of the benzylium cation is
similar to that obtained in an argon tagging experiment [V. Dryza, N. Chalyavi,
J.A. Sanelli, and E.J. Bieske, J. Chem. Phys. 137, 204304 (2012)], with an
additional splitting assigned to Fermi resonances. The visible spectrum of the
1-phenylethyl cation also shows vibrational progressions. For both cations, the
second electronic transition is observed in the UV, around 33 000 cm-1 (4.1
eV), and shows a broadened vibrational progression. In both cases the S2
optimized geometry is non planar. The third electronic transition observed
around 40 000 cm-1 (5.0 eV) is even broader with no apparent vibrational
structures, which is indicative of either a fast non-radiative process or a
very large change in geometry between the excited and the ground states. The
oscillator strengths calculated for tropylium and methyl tropylium are weak.
Therefore, these isomeric structures are most likely not responsible for these
absorption features. Finally, the fragmentation pattern changes in the second
and third electronic states: C2H2 loss becomes predominant at higher excitation
energies, for both cations
One-Parameter GHG Emission Policy with R&D-based Growth
This document examines the GHG emission policy of regions which use land, labor and emitting inputs in production and enhance their productivity by devoting labor to R&D, but with different endowments and technology. The regions also have different impacts on global pollution. The problem is to organize common emission policy, if the regions cannot form a federation with a common budget and the policy parameters must be uniform for all regions. The results are the following. If a self-interested central planner allocate emission caps in fixed proportion to past emissions (i.e. grandfathering), then it establishes the Pareto optimum, decreasing emissions and promoting R&D and economic growth
Extractive Text-Based Summarization of Arabic videos: Issues, Approaches and Evaluations
International audienceIn this paper, we present and evaluate a method for extractive text-based summarization of Arabic videos. The algorithm is proposed in the scope of the AMIS project that aims at helping a user to understand videos given in a foreign language (Arabic). For that, the project proposes several strategies to translate and summarize the videos. One of them consists in transcribing the Ara-bic videos, summarizing the transcriptions, and translating the summary. In this paper we describe the video corpus that was collected from YouTube and present and evaluate the transcription-summarization part of this strategy. Moreover, we present the Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system used to transcribe the videos, and show how we adapted this system to the Algerian dialect. Then, we describe how we automatically segment into sentences the sequence of words provided by the ASR system, and how we summarize the obtained sequence of sentences. We evaluate objectively and subjectively our approach. Results show that the ASR system performs well in terms of Word Error Rate on MSA, but needs to be adapted for dealing with Algerian dialect data. The subjective evaluation shows the same behaviour than ASR: transcriptions for videos containing dialectal data were better scored than videos containing only MSA data. However, summaries based on transcriptions are not as well rated, even when transcriptions are better rated. Last, the study shows that features, such as the lengths of transcriptions and summaries, and the subjective score of transcriptions, explain only 31% of the subjective score of summaries
Modelling last glacial cycle ice dynamics in the Alps
The European Alps, the cradle of pioneering glacial studies, are
one of the regions where geological markers of past glaciations are most
abundant and well-studied. Such conditions make the region ideal for testing
numerical glacier models based on simplified ice flow physics against
field-based reconstructions and vice versa.Here, we use the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM) to model the entire last
glacial cycle (120–0 ka) in the Alps, using horizontal resolutions of 2 and
1 km. Climate forcing is derived using two sources: present-day climate data
from WorldClim and the ERA-Interim reanalysis; time-dependent temperature
offsets from multiple palaeo-climate proxies. Among the latter, only the
European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) ice core record yields
glaciation during marine oxygen isotope stages 4 (69–62 ka) and 2
(34–18 ka). This is spatially and temporally consistent with the geological
reconstructions, while the other records used result in excessive early
glacial cycle ice cover and a late Last Glacial Maximum. Despite the low
variability of this Antarctic-based climate forcing, our simulation depicts a
highly dynamic ice sheet, showing that Alpine glaciers may have advanced many
times over the foreland during the last glacial cycle. Ice flow patterns
during peak glaciation are largely governed by subglacial topography but
include occasional transfluences through the mountain passes. Modelled
maximum ice surface is on average 861 m higher than observed trimline
elevations in the upper Rhône Valley, yet our simulation predicts little
erosion at high elevation due to cold-based ice. Finally, despite the uniform
climate forcing, differences in glacier
catchment hypsometry produce a time-transgressive Last Glacial Maximum
advance, with some glaciers reaching their modelled maximum extent as early
as 27 ka and others as late as 21 ka.</p
The implausibility of ‘usual care’ in an open system: sedation and weaning practices in Paediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) in the United Kingdom (UK)
Background: The power of the randomised controlled trial depends upon its capacity to operate in a closed
system whereby the intervention is the only causal force acting upon the experimental group and absent in the
control group, permitting a valid assessment of intervention efficacy. Conversely, clinical arenas are open systems
where factors relating to context, resources, interpretation and actions of individuals will affect implementation and
effectiveness of interventions. Consequently, the comparator (usual care) can be difficult to define and variable in
multi-centre trials. Hence outcomes cannot be understood without considering usual care and factors that may
affect implementation and impact on the intervention.
Methods: Using a fieldwork approach, we describe PICU context, ‘usual’ practice in sedation and weaning from
mechanical ventilation, and factors affecting implementation prior to designing a trial involving a sedation and
ventilation weaning intervention. We collected data from 23 UK PICUs between June and November 2014 using
observation, individual and multi-disciplinary group interviews with staff.
Results: Pain and sedation practices were broadly similar in terms of drug usage and assessment tools. Sedation
protocols linking assessment to appropriate titration of sedatives and sedation holds were rarely used (9 % and 4 %
of PICUs respectively). Ventilator weaning was primarily a medical-led process with 39 % of PICUs engaging senior
nurses in the process: weaning protocols were rarely used (9 % of PICUs). Weaning methods were variably based
on clinician preference. No formal criteria or use of spontaneous breathing trials were used to test weaning
readiness. Seventeen PICUs (74 %) had prior engagement in multi-centre trials, but limited research nurse
availability. Barriers to previous trial implementation were intervention complexity, lack of belief in the evidence and
inadequate training. Facilitating factors were senior staff buy-in and dedicated research nurse provision.
Conclusions: We examined and identified contextual and organisational factors that may impact on the
implementation of our intervention. We found usual practice relating to sedation, analgesia and ventilator weaning
broadly similar, yet distinctively different from our proposed intervention, providing assurance in our ability to
evaluate intervention effects. The data will enable us to develop an implementation plan; considering these factors
we can more fully understand their impact on study outcomes
