Synthesis of electro-optic modulators for amplitude modulation of light
Electro-optical modulator realizes voltage transfer function in synthesizing birefringent networks. Choice of the voltage transfer function is important, the most satisfactory optimizes the modulator property
Technique developed for measuring transmittance of optical birefringent networks
The transmission characteristics of synthesized optical single-pass and double-pass birefringent networks is obtained by measuring network transmission as a function of network temperature. This technique is most useful for testing those birefringent networks whose bandwidths and periods are very small

Regularity for eigenfunctions of Schr\"odinger operators
We prove a regularity result in weighted Sobolev spaces (or
Babuska--Kondratiev spaces) for the eigenfunctions of a Schr\"odinger operator.
More precisely, let K_{a}^{m}(\mathbb{R}^{3N}) be the weighted Sobolev space
obtained by blowing up the set of singular points of the Coulomb type potential
V(x) = \sum_{1 \le j \le N} \frac{b_j}{|x_j|} + \sum_{1 \le i < j \le N}
\frac{c_{ij}}{|x_i-x_j|}, x in \mathbb{R}^{3N}, b_j, c_{ij} in \mathbb{R}. If u
in L^2(\mathbb{R}^{3N}) satisfies (-\Delta + V) u = \lambda u in distribution
sense, then u belongs to K_{a}^{m} for all m \in \mathbb{Z}_+ and all a \le 0.
Our result extends to the case when b_j and c_{ij} are suitable bounded
functions on the blown-up space. In the single-electron, multi-nuclei case, we
obtain the same result for all a<3/2.Comment: to appear in Lett. Math. Phy
Dirac-harmonic maps from index theory
We prove existence results for Dirac-harmonic maps using index theoretical
tools. They are mainly interesting if the source manifold has dimension 1 or 2
modulo 8. Our solutions are uncoupled in the sense that the underlying map
between the source and target manifolds is a harmonic map.Comment: 26 pages, no figur
The Cauchy problems for Einstein metrics and parallel spinors
We show that in the analytic category, given a Riemannian metric on a
hypersurface and a symmetric tensor on , the metric
can be locally extended to a Riemannian Einstein metric on with second
fundamental form , provided that and satisfy the constraints on
imposed by the contracted Codazzi equations. We use this fact to study the
Cauchy problem for metrics with parallel spinors in the real analytic category
and give an affirmative answer to a question raised in B\"ar, Gauduchon,
Moroianu (2005). We also answer negatively the corresponding questions in the
smooth category.Comment: 28 pages; final versio
On a spin conformal invariant on manifolds with boundary
On a n-dimensional connected compact manifold with non-empty boundary
equipped with a Riemannian metric, a spin structure and a chirality operator,
we study some properties of a spin conformal invariant defined from the first
eigenvalue of the Dirac operator under the chiral bag boundary condition. More
precisely, we show that we can derive a spinorial analogue of Aubin's
inequality.Comment: 26 page
Experimental evidence for the role of cantori as barriers in a quantum system
We investigate the effect of cantori on momentum diffusion in a quantum
system. Ultracold caesium atoms are subjected to a specifically designed
periodically pulsed standing wave. A cantorus separates two chaotic regions of
the classical phase space. Diffusion through the cantorus is classically
predicted. Quantum diffusion is only significant when the classical phase-space
area escaping through the cantorus per period greatly exceeds Planck's
constant. Experimental data and a quantum analysis confirm that the cantori act
as barriers.Comment: 19 pages including 9 figures, Accepted for publication in Physical

Dual Band a-Si:H Solar-Slot Antenna for 2.4/5.2GHz WLAN Applications
A simple and compact design of solar-slot antenna for dual band 2.4/5.2GHz wireless local area networks (WLAN) applications is proposed. The design employs amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) solar cells in polyimide substrate with an embedded twin strip slot structure to generate dual resonant frequencies. A T-shaped microstripline feed is used to excite the twin slot in the a-Si:H solar cell. The measured impedance bandwidths for the proposed solar antenna are 25.9% (642 MHz) centered at 2.482 GHz and 8.2% (420 MHz) centered at 5.098 GHz. The measured gain at 2.4 and 5.2 GHz are 3.1 dBi and 2.1 dBi respectively
IFKIS - a basis for managing avalanche risk in settlements and on roads in Switzerland
After the avalanche winter of 1999 in Switzerland, which caused 17 deaths and damage of over CHF 600 mill. in buildings and on roads, the project IFKIS, aimed at improving the basics of organizational measures (closure of roads, evacuation etc.) in avalanche risk management, was initiated. <P style='line-height: 20px;'> The three main parts of the project were the development of a compulsory checklist for avalanche safety services, a modular education and training course program and an information system for safety services. The information system was developed in order to improve both the information flux between the national centre for avalanche forecasting, the Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF, and the local safety services on the one hand and the communication between avalanche safety services in the communities on the other hand. <P style='line-height: 20px;'> The results of this project make a valuable contribution to strengthening organizational measures in avalanche risk management and to closing the gaps, which became apparent during the avalanche winter of 1999. They are not restricted to snow avalanches but can also be adapted for dealing with other natural hazard processes and catastrophes
