Academic goals orientation questionnaire for Colombian nursing students:Validity and reliability study
Background
Academic motivation guides students toward the achievement of academic objectives and influences their learning. However, there is little research on this subject in nursing education, and validated instruments are not available in Latin America.
Objective
To determine the validity and reliability of the Academic Goals Orientation Questionnaire in Colombian nursing students.
Design
Cross-sectional psychometric study developed in the second semester of 2016.
Settings and participants.
Undergraduate students in nursing at the National University of Colombia (n = 323).
Methods
The Academic Goals Orientation Questionnaire was administered electronically. In addition, the variables of age, sex and academic year were collected. An analysis of construct validity was carried out by exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. The reliability of the questionnaire was studied with Cronbach's alpha.
Results
The exploratory factor analysis revealed the presence of four factors that explain 53.4% of the total variance and that correspond to the dimensions of the original instrument. The overall reliability was α = 0.714. The confirmatory factor analysis verified a good fit of the model (χ2 = 128, p = .024); its standardized mean square residue (SRMR) was 0.0471; the root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) was 0.03 (IC95% = 0.011–0.044), and the comparative fit index (CFI) was 0.972. The learning or task goal obtained the highest average score (m = 4.67, 95% CI = 4.629–4.712), and the Work avoidance goal was the worst rated (m = 2.126, 95% CI = 2.055–2.198) by the students.
Conclusion
The Academic Goal Orientation Questionnaire has an adequate validity and reliability in the Colombian context that allows it to be applied in nursing students. However, it is recommended to expand the study with larger samples and other countries in the same context
Antioxidant activity of alkyl gallates and glycosyl alkyl gallates in fish oil in water emulsions: Relevance of their surface active properties and of the type of emulsifier
The antioxidant activity of gallic acid and a series of alkyl gallates (C4-C18) and glycosylated alkyl gallates (C4-C18) on fish oil-in-water emulsions was studied. Three types of emulsifiers, lecithin, Tween-20 and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) were tested. A nonlinear behavior of the antioxidant activity of alkyl gallates when increasing alkyl chain length was observed for emulsions prepared with lecithin. Medium-size alkyl gallates (C6-C12) were the best antioxidants. In contrast, for emulsions prepared with Tween-20, the antioxidants seem to follow the polar paradox. Glucosyl alkyl gallates were shown previously to be better surfactants than alkyl gallates. Nevertheless, they exhibited a worse antioxidant capacity than their corresponding alkyl gallates, in emulsions prepared with lecithin or Tween-20, indicating the greater relevance of having three OH groups at the polar head in comparison with having improved surfactant properties but just a di-ortho phenolic structure in the antioxidant
Virgin olive oil quality relates to flavor and unique health benefits. Some of these properties are
at the most desirable level when the oil is just extracted, since it is not a product that improves with age. On the
contrary, the concentrations of many compounds change during its shelf-life. These changes reveal the aging of
the oil but do not necessarily mean decay in sensory properties, so in some cases an aged oil from healthy olives
may be better qualified than a fresh one from olives affected by fermentation. The aim of this work is to analyze
different methodologies proposed for assessing the quality of virgin olive oil with implications in freshness and
aging of the oil, and to highlight the possibilities of rapid spectrofluorimetric techniques for assessing oil freshness by checking the evolution of pigments during storage. The observed change in the selected spectral features
and mathematical modelling over time was compared with the accepted model for predicting the amount of
pyropheophytin a, which is based on isokinetic studies. The best regression was obtained for 655 nm (adjustedR2
= 0.91) wavelength, which matches the distinctive band of pigments. The two mathematical models described
in this study highlight the usefulness of pigments in the prediction of the shelf-life of extra virgin olive oil.

Candida dubliniensis, a new fungal pathogen
There is a high interest in Candida species other than Candida albicans because of the rise and the epidemiological shifts in candidiasis. These emerging Candida species are favored by the increase of immunocompromised patients and the use of new medical practices, and m. Most oropharyngeal candidiasis can be foundare observed in those HIV-infected patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Candida dubliniensis is a recently described opportunistic pathogen that is closely related to C. albicans but differs from it with respect to epidemiology, certain virulence characteristics, and the ability to develop fluconazole resistance in vitro. C. dubliniensis has been linked to oral candidiasis in AIDS patients, although it has recently been associated to invasive disease. C. dubliniensis shares diagnostic characteristics with C. albicans, as germ tube- and chlamydospore-production, and it is generally misclassified as C. albicans by standard diagnostic procedures. Several recent studies have attempted to elucidate useful phenotypic and genotypic characteristics for separating both species. A large variety of methods have been developed with the aim of facilitating rapid and, accurate identification of this species. These have included differential chromogenic isolation platesculture media, direct immunological tests, and enhanced manual and automated biochemical and enzymatic panels. Chromogenic isolation media, as CHROMagar Candida, demonstrate better detection rates than traditional media, and allow the presumptive identification of C. dubliniensis by means of colony color (dark-green colonies). API 20 C AUX system is considered a reference method, but ID 32 C strip, the VITEK Yeast Biochemical Card and the VITEK 2 ID-YST system correctly identify most C. dubliniensis isolates, being the latter the most accurate. Spectroscopic methods, such as Fourier transformed-infrared spectroscopy, offer potential advantages. However, many authors consider that standard methods for differentiation of Candida species are time-consuming, often insensitive and can fail to distinguish C. dubliniensis. To overcome these low sensitivity, poor specificity and intolerable delay, drawbacks, molecular tools have been developed to discriminate C. dubliniensis, and particularly those based on the polymerase chain reaction. But, molecular tools prove difficult and too complex for routine use in the clinical laboratory setting and new developments are necessary. Moreover, an increased resistance to antifungal drugs has been described. Although preliminary studies indicate that most strains of C. dubliniensis are susceptible to antifungal agents, fluconazole-resistant strains have been detected. Furthermore, fluconazole-resistant strains are easily derived in vitro, showing an increased expression of multidrug resistance transporters, as MDR1
