Infering Air Quality from Traffic Data using Transferable Neural Network Models
This work presents a neural network based model for inferring air quality from traffic measurements.
It is important to obtain information on air quality in urban environments in order to meet legislative and policy requirements. Measurement equipment tends to be expensive to purchase and maintain. Therefore, a model based approach capable of accurate determination of pollution levels is highly beneficial.
The objective of this study was to develop a neural network model to accurately infer pollution levels from existing data sources in Leicester, UK.
Neural Networks are models made of several highly interconnected processing elements. These elements process information by their dynamic state response to inputs. Problems which were not solvable by traditional algorithmic approaches frequently can be solved using neural networks.
This paper shows that using a simple neural network with traffic and meteorological data as inputs, the air quality can be estimated with a good level of generalisation and in near real-time.
By applying these models to links rather than nodes, this methodology can directly be used to inform traffic engineers and direct traffic management decisions towards enhancing local air quality and traffic management simultaneously.Universidad de Málaga. High resolution chromosome 3p, 8p, 9q and 22q allelotyping analysis in the pathogenesis of gallbladder carcinoma
Our recent genome-wide allelotyping analysis of gallbladder carcinoma identified 3p, 8p, 9q and 22q as chromosomal regions with frequent loss of heterozygosity. The present study was undertaken to more precisely identify the presence and location of regions of frequent allele loss involving those chromosomes in gallbladder carcinoma. Microdissected tissue from 24 gallbladder carcinoma were analysed for PCR-based loss of heterozygosity using 81 microsatellite markers spanning chromosome 3p (n=26), 8p (n=14), 9q (n=29) and 22q (n=12) regions. We also studied the role of those allele losses in gallbladder carcinoma pathogenesis by examining 45 microdissected normal and dysplastic gallbladder epithelia accompanying gallbladder carcinoma, using 17 microsatellite markers. Overall frequencies of loss of heterozygosity at 3p (100%), 8p (100%), 9q (88%), and 22q (92%) sites were very high in gallbladder carcinoma, and we identified 13 distinct regions undergoing frequent loss of heterozygosity in tumours. Allele losses were frequently detected in normal and dysplastic gallbladder epithelia. There was a progressive increase of the overall loss of heterozygosity frequency with increasing severity of histopathological changes. Allele losses were not random and followed a sequence. This study refines several distinct chromosome 3p, 8p, 9q and 22q regions undergoing frequent allele loss in gallbladder carcinoma that will aid in the positional identification of tumour suppressor genes involved in gallbladder carcinoma pathogenesis
Sign-reversal of the in-plane resistivity anisotropy in hole-doped iron pnictides
The in-plane anisotropy of the electrical resistivity across the coupled
orthorhombic and magnetic transitions of the iron pnictides has been
extensively studied in the parent and electron-doped compounds. All these
studies universally show that the resistivity across the long
orthorhombic axis - along which the spins couple antiferromagnetically
below the magnetic transition temperature - is smaller than the resistivity
of the short orthorhombic axis , i. e. .
Here we report that in the hole-doped compounds
BaKFeAs, as the doping level increases, the
resistivity anisotropy initially becomes vanishingly small, and eventually
changes sign for sufficiently large doping, i. e. . This
observation is in agreement with a recent theoretical prediction that considers
the anisotropic scattering of electrons by spin-fluctuations in the

Evolution of Robustness to Noise and Mutation in Gene Expression Dynamics
Phenotype of biological systems needs to be robust against mutation in order
to sustain themselves between generations. On the other hand, phenotype of an
individual also needs to be robust against fluctuations of both internal and
external origins that are encountered during growth and development. Is there a
relationship between these two types of robustness, one during a single
generation and the other during evolution? Could stochasticity in gene
expression have any relevance to the evolution of these robustness? Robustness
can be defined by the sharpness of the distribution of phenotype; the variance
of phenotype distribution due to genetic variation gives a measure of `genetic
robustness' while that of isogenic individuals gives a measure of
`developmental robustness'. Through simulations of a simple stochastic gene
expression network that undergoes mutation and selection, we show that in order
for the network to acquire both types of robustness, the phenotypic variance
induced by mutations must be smaller than that observed in an isogenic
population. As the latter originates from noise in gene expression, this
signifies that the genetic robustness evolves only when the noise strength in
gene expression is larger than some threshold. In such a case, the two
variances decrease throughout the evolutionary time course, indicating increase
in robustness. The results reveal how noise that cells encounter during growth
and development shapes networks' robustness to stochasticity in gene
expression, which in turn shapes networks' robustness to mutation. The
condition for evolution of robustness as well as relationship between genetic
and developmental robustness is derived through the variance of phenotypic
fluctuations, which are measurable experimentally.Comment: 25 page
Evidence Vs. Practice in Early Drain Removal Following Pancreatectomy
Background:
Early drain removal when postoperative day (POD) 1 drain fluid amylase (DFA) was ≤ 5000 U/L reduced complications in a previous randomized controlled trial. We hypothesized that most surgeons continue to remove drains late and this is associated with inferior outcomes.
Methods:
We assessed the practice of surgeons in a prospectively maintained pancreas surgery registry to determine the association between timing of drain removal with demographics, co-morbidities, and complications. We selected patients with POD1 DFA ≤ 5000 U/L and excluded those without drains, and subjects without data on POD1 DFA or timing of drain removal. Early drain removal was defined as ≤ POD5.
Results:
244 patients met inclusion criteria. Only 90 (37%) had drains removed early. Estimated blood loss was greater in the late removal group (190 mL vs 100 mL, p = 0.005) and pathological findings associated with soft gland texture were more frequent (97(63%) vs 35(39%), p < 0.0001). Patients in the late drain removal group had more complications (84(55%) vs 30(33%), p = 0.001) including pancreatic fistula (55(36%) vs 4(4%), p < 0.0001), delayed gastric emptying (27(18%) vs 3(3%), p = 0.002), and longer length of stay (7 days vs 5 days, p < 0.0001). In subset analysis for procedure type, complications and pancreatic fistula remained significant for both pancreatoduodenectomy and distal pancreatectomy.
Conclusion:
Despite level 1 data suggesting improved outcomes with early removal when POD1 DFA is ≤ 5000 U/L, experienced pancreas surgeons more frequently removed drains late. This practice was associated with known risk factors (EBL, soft pancreas) and may be associated with inferior outcomes suggesting potential for improvement
Diabetes status and post-load plasma glucose concentration in relation to site-specific cancer mortality: findings from the original Whitehall study
ObjectiveWhile several studies have reported on the relation of diabetes status with pancreatic cancer risk, the predictive value of this disorder for other malignancies is unclear. Methods: The Whitehall study, a 25year follow-up for mortality experience of 18,006 men with data on post-challenge blood glucose and self-reported diabetes, allowed us to address these issues. Results: There were 2158 cancer deaths at follow-up. Of the 15 cancer outcomes, diabetes status was positively associated with mortality from carcinoma of the pancreas and liver, while the relationship with lung cancer was inverse, after controlling for a range of potential covariates and mediators which included obesity and socioeconomic position. After excluding deaths occurring in the first 10years of follow-up to examine the effect of reverse causality, the magnitude of the relationships for carcinoma of the pancreas and lung was little altered, while for liver cancer it was markedly attenuated. Conclusions: In the present study, diabetes status was related to pancreatic, liver, and lung cancer risk. Cohorts with serially collected data on blood glucose and covariates are required to further examine this area

Superior MRI outcomes with alemtuzumab compared with subcutaneous interferon β-1a in MS
To describe detailed MRI results from 2 head-to-head phase III trials, Comparison of Alemtuzumab and Rebif Efficacy in Multiple Sclerosis Study I (CARE-MS I; NCT00530348) and Study II (CARE-MS II; NCT00548405), of alemtuzumab vs subcutaneous interferon β-1a (SC IFN-β-1a) in patients with active relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS).
The impact of alemtuzumab 12 mg vs SC IFN-β-1a 44 μg on MRI measures was evaluated in patients with RRMS who were treatment-naive (CARE-MS I) or who had an inadequate response, defined as at least one relapse, to prior therapy (CARE-MS II).
Both treatments prevented T2-hyperintense lesion volume increases from baseline. Alemtuzumab was more effective than SC IFN-β-1a on most lesion-based endpoints in both studies ( < 0.05), including decreased risk of new/enlarging T2 lesions over 2 years and gadolinium-enhancing lesions at year 2. Reduced risk of new T1 lesions ( < 0.0001) and gadolinium-enhancing lesion conversion to T1-hypointense black holes ( = 0.0078) were observed with alemtuzumab vs SC IFN-β-1a in CARE-MS II. Alemtuzumab slowed brain volume loss over 2 years in CARE-MS I ( < 0.0001) and II ( = 0.012) vs SC IFN-β-1a.
Alemtuzumab demonstrated greater efficacy than SC IFN-β-1a on MRI endpoints in active RRMS. The superiority of alemtuzumab was more prominent during the second year of both studies. These findings complement the superior clinical efficacy of alemtuzumab over SC IFN-β-1a in RRMS.

Virtual coatings application system
A virtual coatings application system has several features to enhance the realism of simulated spray painting. The system generally includes a display screen on which is defined a virtual surface (such as a truck door) that is intended to be virtually painted or coated by the user. Alternatively, the system includes a head-mounted display unit that displays a virtual spray painting environment in which the virtual surface is defined. The user operates an instrumented spray gun controller that outputs one or more signals representing data as to the status of the controls on the spray gun controller. The system also has a motion tracking system that tracks the position and orientation of the spray gun controller with respect to the virtual surface. Simulation software generates virtual spray pattern data in response to at least the data from the spray gun controller and the position and orientation data received from the tracking system. Virtual spray pattern images are displayed in real time on the virtual surface in accordance with the accumulation of virtual spray pattern data at each location on the virtual surface
