Abundance and diversity of soil arthropods in the olive grove ecosystem
Arthropods are part of important functional groups in soil food webs. Recognizing these
arthropods and understanding their function in the ecosystem as well as when they are active is
essential to understanding their roles. In the present work, the abundance and diversity of soil
arthropods is examined in olive groves in the northeast region of Portugal during the spring. Five
classes of arthropods were found: Chilopoda, Malacostraca, Entognatha, Insecta, and Arachnida.
Captures were numerically dominated by Collembola within Entognatha, representing 70.9% of
total captures. Arachnida and Insecta classes represented about 20.4 and 9.0%, respectively.
Among the predatory arthropods, the most representative groups were Araneae and Opiliones
from Arachnida, and Formicidae, Carabidae, and Staphylinidae from Insecta. From the
Formicidae family, Tetramorium semilaeve (Andre 1883), Tapinoma nigerrimum (Nylander
1856), and Crematogaster scutellaris (Olivier 1792) were the most representative ant species.
Arthropods demonstrated preference during the day, with 74% of the total individuals recovered
in this period, although richness and similarity were analogous during the day and night
The colourful embroidery of Castelo Branco (Portugal) was the theme for the development of a project that enhances the relationship between formal and non-formal contexts in chemistry education and in the training of teachers and cultural animators. The central question concerns the possibility of identifying and obtaining the old and modern dyes that are used for dyeing silk. We present two experimental activities: extraction of a natural dye and use of mordant with a synthetic dye
Reactivity of hydroxy-containing aromatic compounds towards electrogenerated hydroxyl radicals
A kinetic study on the oxidation of hydroxy-containing aromatic compounds by electrogenerated HO radical and simultaneous by direct electron transfer is presented. First order kinetics are used to describe consumption rates of hydroquinone, benzoic acid and of hydroxybenzoic acid derivatives by galvanostatic electrolysis with simultaneous oxygen evolution at a Pt electrode. Linear correlations were established from the effect of electrolyses current density on kapp. The meaning of the intercept and of the slope is analysed. A good agreement is found between intercept values and the apparent rate constants from potentiostatic electrolysis without O2 evolution. Simultaneously, the slopes magnitude corroborate the relative reactivity order of species that was established considering the occurrence of positive charge densities on carbon atoms of the aromatic ring. Therefore, the present analysis provides kinetic information concerning both, the direct electron-transfer and the reaction with HO radical. Thanks are due to FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia) and FEDER (European

Influence of the day period on the abundance and diversity of soil arthropods in olive grove ecosystem.
On soil food webs, arthropods are part of important functional groups. Recognize these arthropods
and understand its function in the ecosystem as well as the period of the day in which they are
actives, is essential to understand their roles. In the present work we intend to study the soil arthropods
diversity as well as the period of the day that are actives in three olive groves from the Northeast
of Portugal. Particular emphasis was given to the generalist predators that can attack olive fruit fly
pupae in soil. The work was carried out during the spring of 2006 and at a bi-weekly basis 25 pitfall
traps/grove were put during 12 hours both on day period (from 7:00am to 7:00pm) and on
night period (from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am). The collected individuals were sorted and identified. Five
classes of arthropods were found: Chilopoda, Malacostraca, Entognatha, Insecta and Arachnida.
Captures were numerically dominated by springtails. Arachnida and Insecta classes represented
about 20.4% and 9.0% respectively from the total captures. Among the predatory arthropods, the

Abundance and diversity of Heteropteran species in portuguese olive groves
The olive tree canopy is a habitat for phytophagous and predaceous Heteropteran specimens
whose biodiversity is important to be characterized. The aim of this world was to study the abundance
and diversity of Heteropteran specimens in Portuguese olive groves with different plant
protection systems (conventional. integrated protection and organic farming groves). Therefore,
data were obtained in olive groves located in the main olive Portuguese regions (Alto Alentejo and Trás-os-Montes). Sampling occurred in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003 and samples were obtained
through the beating technique, on a weekly or fortnight basis from March to November of each
year. The captured heteropteran specimens were identified to family level and, when possible, to
genera or species level. Experimental results showed that specimens belonged to six families that
were, for order of importance: Anthocoridae, Miridae. Lygaeidae, Tingidae, Penlalomidae and
Nabidae. Beneficial predaceous specimens like AntiJocoris sp. and Deraeocoris lutenscens
(Schilling, 1837) were the most abundant of the Anthocoridae and Miridae families, respectively.
These families were more abundant from the beginning to the middle of June which coincided with
the antophagou5 larval stage of the olive moth, Prays oleae (Bernard)
