    Highly stable and efficient light-emitting electrochemical cells based on cationic iridium complexes bearing arylazole ancillary ligands

    A series of bis-cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes of general formula [Ir(ppy)2(N∧N)][PF6] (ppy− = 2-phenylpyridinate; N∧N = 2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)pyridine (1), 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole (2), 1-methyl-2-pyridin-2-yl- 1H-benzimidazole (3), 2-(4â€Č-thiazolyl)benzimidazole (4), 1- methyl-2-(4â€Č-thiazolyl)benzimidazole (5)) is reported, and their use as electroluminescent materials in light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC) devices is investigated. [2][PF6] and [3][PF6] are orange emitters with intense unstructured emission around 590 nm in acetonitrile solution. [1][PF6], [4][PF6], and [5][PF6] are green weak emitters with structured emission bands peaking around 500 nm. The different photophysical properties are due to the effect that the chemical structure of the ancillary ligand has on the nature of the emitting triplet state. Whereas the benzimidazole unit stabilizes the LUMO and gives rise to a 3MLCT/3LLCT emitting triplet in [2][PF6] and [3][PF6], the presence of the thiazolyl ring produces the opposite effect in [4][PF6] and [5][PF6] and the emitting state has a predominant 3LC character. Complexes with 3MLCT/3LLCT emitting triplets give rise to LEC devices with luminance values 1 order higher than those of complexes with 3LC emitting states. Protecting the imidazole N−H bond with a methyl group, as in complexes [3][PF6] and [5][PF6], shows that the emissive properties become more stable.     Coastal-ocean variability in primary production in the Canary Current upwelling region: comparison among in situ and satellite-derived estimates

However, past trends in net primary production are uncertain, due to differences in the outputs of remote sensing models and the lack of in situ data to validate these models in the region. Here we compare four widely-used models – the Vertically Generalized Production Model (VGPM) and its variant based on Eppley’s description of the growth function (Eppley-VGPM), the Carbon-based Production Model (CbPM), and the Carbon, Absorption and Fluorescence Euphotic-resolving model (CAFE)- with in situ primary production (PP) data. Together with chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a) and phytoplankton biomass (B), we measured PP by 14C and 13C uptake, and oxygen evolution inside incubation bottles, along 11 stations across the transition zone expanding from the coastal upwelling to the open ocean waters at the Cape Verde Frontal Zone (17-23ÂșN; 16-26ÂșW). We compared in situ PP, Chl a and B with models’ outputs (NPP) and inputs (satellite derived Chl a and B), respectively. Although carbon and oxygen –based in situ PP estimates were frequently correlated, we found that only the Chl a-based VGPMs were significantly correlated with in situ estimates, yet these are among the the first-described models in the literature. Models based on B, however, did not correlate with in situ PP estimations, in spite that satellite-derived B presented better correlations than Chl a with the in situ dataN

    Detection of kinase domain mutations in BCR::ABL1 leukemia by ultra-deep sequencing of genomic DNA

    The screening of the BCR::ABL1 kinase domain (KD) mutation has become a routine analysis in case of warning/failure for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) Philadelphia (Ph)-positive patients. In this study, we present a novel DNA-based next-generation sequencing (NGS) methodology for KD ABL1 mutation detection and monitoring with a 1.0E−4 sensitivity. This approach was validated with a well-stablished RNA-based nested NGS method. The correlation of both techniques for the quantification of ABL1 mutations was high (Pearson r = 0.858, p < 0.001), offering DNA-DeepNGS a sensitivity of 92% and specificity of 82%. The clinical impact was studied in a cohort of 129 patients (n = 67 for CML and n = 62 for B-ALL patients). A total of 162 samples (n = 86 CML and n = 76 B-ALL) were studied. Of them, 27 out of 86 harbored mutations (6 in warning and 21 in failure) for CML, and 13 out of 76 (2 diagnostic and 11 relapse samples) did in B-ALL patients. In addition, in four cases were detected mutation despite BCR::ABL1 < 1%. In conclusion, we were able to detect KD ABL1 mutations with a 1.0E−4 sensitivity by NGS using DNA as starting material even in patients with low levels of disease.Tis project was funded in part by CRIS CANCER FOUNDATION

    Prospective associations between a priori dietary patterns adherence and kidney function in an elderly Mediterranean population at high cardiovascular risk

    Purpose To assess the association between three different a priori dietary patterns adherence (17-item energy reduced-Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet), Trichopoulou-MedDiet and Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH)), as well as the Protein Diet Score and kidney function decline after one year of follow-up in elderly individuals with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods We prospectively analyzed 5675 participants (55-75 years) from the PREDIMED-Plus study. At baseline and at one year, we evaluated the creatinine-based estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and food-frequency questionnaires-derived dietary scores. Associations between four categories (decrease/maintenance and tertiles of increase) of each dietary pattern and changes in eGFR (ml/min/1.73m(2)) or >= 10% eGFR decline were assessed by fitting multivariable linear or logistic regression models, as appropriate. Results Participants in the highest tertile of increase in 17-item erMedDiet Score showed higher upward changes in eGFR (beta: 1.87 ml/min/1.73m(2); 95% CI: 1.00-2.73) and had lower odds of >= 10% eGFR decline (OR: 0.62; 95% CI: 0.47-0.82) compared to individuals in the decrease/maintenance category, while Trichopoulou-MedDiet and DASH Scores were not associated with any renal outcomes. Those in the highest tertile of increase in Protein Diet Score had greater downward changes in eGFR (beta: - 0.87 ml/min/1.73m(2); 95% CI: - 1.73 to - 0.01) and 32% higher odds of eGFR decline (OR: 1.32; 95% CI: 1.00-1.75). Conclusions Among elderly individuals with overweight/obesity and MetS, only higher upward change in the 17-item erMedDiet score adherence was associated with better kidney function after one year. However, increasing Protein Diet Score appeared to have an adverse impact on kidney health.     Dietary diversity and Depression: Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses in Spanish adult population with Metabolic Syndrome. Findings from PREDIMED-PLUS Trial.

    Objective: To examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal (2-year follow-up) associations between Dietary Diversity (DD) and depressive symptoms. Design: An energy-adjusted Dietary Diversity Score (DDS) was assessed using a validated food-frequency questionnaire and was categorized into quartiles (Q). The variety in each food group was classified into 4 categories of diversity (C). Depressive symptoms were assessed with Beck Depression Inventory-II (Beck II) questionnaire and depression cases defined as physician-diagnosed or Beck II>=18. Linear and logistic regression models were used. Setting: Spanish older adults with Metabolic Syndrome. Participants: A total of 6625 adults aged (55-75 years) from the PREDIMED-Plus study with overweight or obesity and MetS. Results: Total DDS was inversely and statistically significantly associated with depression in the cross-sectional analysis conducted; Odds Ratio (OR) Q4 vs Q1= 0.76 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.64, 0.90). This was driven by high diversity compared to low diversity (C3 vs. C1) of vegetables [OR (95%CI) = 0.75 (0.57, 0.93)], cereals [OR (95%CI) = 0.72 (0.56-0.94)] and proteins [OR (95%CI) = 0.27 (0.11, 0.62)]. In the longitudinal analysis, there was no significant association between the baseline DDS and changes in depressive symptoms after 2 y- of follow-up, except for DD in vegetables C4 vs C1= [ÎČ (95%CI) = 0.70 (0.05, 1.35)]. Conclusions: According to our results, DD is associated with the presence of depressive symptoms but eating more diverse does not seem to reduce the risk of future depression. Additional longitudinal studies (with longer follow-up period) are needed to confirm these findings

    La creciente epidemia de obesidad ha sido uno de los retos mĂĄs importantes de salud pĂșblica en MĂ©xico durante los Ășltimos años. Con apoyo de la FederaciĂłn Mundial de Obesidad, en 2021 formamos un grupo de profesionales para identificar y resumir las acciones prioritarias en las que puede enfocarse nuestro paĂ­s para hacer frente a esta epidemia. Al proceso de desarrollo y discusiĂłn de este grupo se sumaron mĂĄs de 1 000 profesionales de la salud para retomar recomendaciones de documentos y guĂ­as de alto nivel previamente publicados. En conmemoraciĂłn del DĂ­a Mundial de la Obesidad, en este 2022 se presenta esta postura como insumo para el desarrollo de acciones en el ĂĄmbito profesional y de los diferentes sectores, en la que se incluyen 10 recomendaciones de acciĂłn, desde la perspectiva poblacional hasta la atenciĂłn individualizada, y se enfatiza en la importancia de la participaciĂłn social, de las intervenciones integrales con visiĂłn centrada en la persona y de la sostenibilidad planetaria, ademĂĄs de mejorar la educaciĂłn y las campañas de difusiĂłn, propiciar un ambiente promotor de entornos activos y blindar de conflictos de interĂ©s los esfuerzos de prevenciĂłn y control. La postura hace un llamado para abordar la obesidad de manera seria, con base en la evidencia cientĂ­fica, oportuna e integral, con enfoque de curso de vida, de forma Ă©tica y sensible, y sin perpetuar las barreras del estigma de peso en la sociedad
