    Estimating the prevalence of hunger and food insecurity: The validity of questionnaire-based measures for the identification of households

    This study had three objectives: (1) to assess the validity of questionnaire-based measures in identifying households experiencing hunger and food insecurity, (2) to examine the interrelationships of different questionnaire-based measures, and (3) to examine the construction of a continuous food insecurity scale intended to differentiate three levels of food insecurity within households. A 1993 survey of 193 randomly sampled rural households with women and children living at home provided data on demographics, risk factors for food insecurity, Radimer/Cornell, CCHIP, and NHANES III hunger and food insecurity items, coping strategies, fruit and vegetable consumption, disordered eating behaviors, height, weight, dietary recall, and household food-stores inventory. This information was used to develop a definitive criterion measure for hunger and food insecurity, against which the Radimer/Cornell and CCHIP questionnaire-based measures, the NHANES III item, and the continuous food insecurity scale were tested for their specificity and sensitivity in measuring levels of food insecurity.

    The use of zooplankton metrics to determine the trophic status and ecological potential: An approach in a large Mediterranean watershed.

    In the European Water Framework Directive, zooplankton was not included as a Biological Quality Element despite its important place in the aquatic trophic web. In the present study on zooplankton abundances and biomasses, we used several metrics to test their ability to detect differences among trophic statuses and ecological potential levels, and collected a large sum of data in more than 60 reservoirs at Ebro watershed, on more than 300 sampling occasions over 10 years. Our results indicate that most zooplankton metrics are correlated to environmental variables that determine reservoirs' trophic states, especially chlorophyll a and total phosphorus. The metrics with better sensitivity to differentiate trophic states and ecological potential levels were ZOO (total zooplankton), LZOO (large zooplankton), CLAD (cladocerans), and ZOO:CHLA (zooplankton:chlorophyll a ratio). Microcrustacean metrics such as DAPHN (Daphnia), COP (copepods), CYCLO (cyclopoids), and CALA (calanoids) were good at differentiating between high and low water quality in trophic status (oligotrophic-eutrophic) and ecological potential (good or superior-moderate).     Sleep duration and subclinical atherosclerosis: The Aragon Workers' Health Study

    Background and aims: Few studies have evaluated the association of sleep duration with subclinical atherosclerosis, and with heterogeneous findings. We evaluated the association of sleep duration with the presence of coronary, carotid, and femoral subclinical atherosclerosis in healthy middle-age men with low prevalence of clinical comorbidities. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of 1968 men, 40–60 years of age, participating in the Aragon Workers' Health Study (AWHS). Duration of sleep during a typical work week was assessed by questionnaire. Coronary artery calcium scores (CACS) was assessed by computed tomography and the presence of carotid plaque and femoral plaque by ultrasound. Results: In fully adjusted models, the odds ratios (95% CI) for CACS >0 comparing sleep durations of =5, 6, and =8 h with 7 h were 1.34 (0.98–1.85), 1.35 (1.08–1.69) and 1.21 (0.90–1.62), respectively (p = 0.04). A similar U-shaped association was observed for CACS =100 and for CACS. The corresponding odds ratios for the presence of at least one carotid plaque were =5, 6, and =8 h with 7 h were 1.23 (0.88–1.72), 1.09 (0.86–1.38), and 0.86 (0.63–1.17), respectively (p = 0.31), and for the presence of at least one femoral plaque were 1.25 (0.87–1.80), 1.19 (0.93–1.51) and 1.17 (0.86–1.61), respectively (p = 0.39). Conclusions: Middle-aged men reporting 7 h of sleep duration had the lowest prevalence of subclinical coronary atherosclerosis as assessed by CACs. Our results support that men with very short or very long sleep durations are at increased risk of atherosclerosis

    Microstructure and photocatalytic activity of APS coatings obtained from different TiO2 nanopowders

    In recent years, intense research has shown that thermal spray techniques, especially atmospheric plasma spraying (APS), can be used to obtain nanostructured TiO2 coatings with effective photocatalytic activity. This study compares the photocatalytic activity of APS coatings obtained from different powders: two nanostructured TiO2 powders produced by spray-drying of two TiO2 nanosuspensions with different solids contents, one spray-dried powder obtained from a suspension comprising a mixture of submicronic and nanometric TiO2 particles and finally one commercial, nanostructured, TiO2 spray-dried powder. All powders were characterised by XRD, FEG-ESEM, granule size distribution, and a flowability evaluation. Feedstock powders were then deposited on austenitic stainless steel coupons using APS. Hydrogen or helium was used as secondary plasma gas. Coating microstructure and phase composition were characterised using FEG-ESEM and XRD techniques; coating anatase content was quantified by the Rietveld method. A significant amount of anatase to rutile transformation was found to take place during the plasma spraying process. In general, the coatings had a bimodal microstructure characterised by the presence of completely fused areas in addition to non-molten areas consisting of agglomerates of anatase nanoparticles. Results also showed that anatase content and porosity of the coatings largely depend on the secondary plasma gas nature, as well as on the characteristics of the feedstock. Finally the photocatalytic activity of the coatings was determined by measuring the degradation of methylene blue dye in an aqueous solution. A reasonably good fit of a first-order kinetic model to the experimental data was found for all coatings.     Beyond property: Rural politics and land-use change in the Colombian sugarcane landscape

    Analysing the sugarcane landscape in the flat valley of the Cauca River (Colombia) reveals that agricultural industrialization in the region required the concentration of land use by regional industrialists and the corresponding exclusion of landowners and poor peasants from territorial decision-making processes. The analytical lens used in this article, based on the use and control over land and land-based natural commons, allows for the characterization of three periods in a non-linear process of articulation and dispute between poor peasant and capitalist agents in the expansion of the sugarcane monoculture during the 20th century.
