A coincidence of cultures: cultural dialogue: problems and prospects

In writing this thesis I decided to move from the general to the particular, beginning with various definitions of poetry and the roles it has played in society at different times in history. I describe how, latterly, it impinged on my own life as a response to certain existential challenges in the environment in which I grew up. This made for an antipathetic atmosphere ruled by philistines whose values—propagated through a deliberately distorted education system and a supine media—and the effects of that atmosphere had to be negated before Turkish society could move on to a different level of self-awareness. So much for theory, which I explore in some detail in first chapter. From theory I move onto practice, specifically my own experience, whilst seeking to avoid the seductions of an ego trip. To this end I selected three of my published works, which had received critical acclaim in significant quarters. These are succeeded by the two fields of activity that have absorbed the most part of my energies, namely translation and anthologisation. Both these activities entail an almost insupportable responsibility. Have I captured the meaning correctly whilst overcoming the linguistic barrier that might impede the translation of the meaning? Would the author be satisfied or dissatisfied with what I have done? Similarly, anthologisation activity bristles with challenges no less formidable, albeit of a somewhat different nature. These were the same challenges as confronted Palgrave when compiling the most famous of all English poetry anthologies, The Golden Treasury. How to choose a poem that relates to a time and reflects the preoccupations as well as the fashion of that time? How to select poems that exemplify a movement in the way that Lyrical Ballads did for the Romantic generation, turning its back on heroic couplets and the artifices of an artificial society, so the individual may relate once more to nature as the primary source of poetic inspiration. This has echoes, no matter how remote, of Turkish literature when people abandoned Divan poetry for modernisation, largely under imported (especially French) influences. In doing this I settle for a definition of Turkishness in its broader sense, that is, Rumelian Turkey as well as Anatolian Turkey. Some of the issues affect and afflict present-day Turkey. Our country stands at a crossroads in its history. This has impacted on my life here in London, where I had sought safety in exile. I learned from bitter experience what William Empson meant when he referred to his life as a university lecturer in Japan as ‘the same war on a different foot’. My experience differs only in terms of location. I was working in an extraterritorial branch of Turkish academy, and the problem with this is that the Ottomans inherited more than a city when they conquered Constantinople; they inherited the tradition of Byzantine intrigue. I promptly became a victim, and am only now beginning to recover, with a bruised ego

Non-Destructive Evaluation of Iowa Pavements Phase 2: Development of a Fully Automated Software System for Rapid Analysis/Processing of the Falling Weight Deflectometer Data

    Get PDF
The Office of Special Investigations at Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) collects FWD data on regular basis to evaluate pavement structural conditions. The primary objective of this study was to develop a fully-automated software system for rapid processing of the FWD data along with a user manual. The software system automatically reads the FWD raw data collected by the JILS-20 type FWD machine that Iowa DOT owns, processes and analyzes the collected data with the rapid prediction algorithms developed during the phase I study. This system smoothly integrates the FWD data analysis algorithms and the computer program being used to collect the pavement deflection data. This system can be used to assess pavement condition, estimate remaining pavement life, and eventually help assess pavement rehabilitation strategies by the Iowa DOT pavement management team. This report describes the developed software in detail and can also be used as a user-manual for conducting simulation studies and detailed analyses

Chalcone derivatives 3a–i containing a thiophene ring were prepared by the condensation of 1-(thiophen-3-yl)ethanone with aromatic aldehydes in excellent yields. The Michael addition of ethyl acetoacetate 4 to chalcone derivatives 3a–i resulted in the formation of nine novel ethyl 6-aryl 4-(3-thienyl)cyclohex-3-en-2-one-1-carboxylate derivatives 6a–i.Keywords: Michael Addition, Ethyl Acetoacetate, Cyclohexenones, Cyclocondensatio

Efficacy of buffered sodium citrate alone and in combination with sodium diacetate againstListeria monocytogenes on beef franks

    Get PDF
We assessed the antimicrobial efficacy of buffered sodium citrate alone and in combination with sodium diacetate against L. monoyctogenes on beef frank samples stored at 39°F. Initial inoculum level of L. monocytogenes was 1.5 log colony forming units (CFU)/cm2. After 6 weeks of incubation at 39°F, the pathogen reached 5.4 log CFU/cm2 in the control sample, but was 1.2 log CFU/cm2 and 0.85 log CFU/cm2 in samples treated with 1% buffered sodium citrate alone and in combination with 0.1% sodium diacetate, respectively. Use of buffered sodium citrate and the combination of buffered sodium citrate and sodium diacetate should improve safety of ready to eat foods by controlling L. monocytogenes during storage

This paper analyzes climate variability and change in the Urmia Lake Basin, northwest of Iran. Annual average of the following data time series has been analyzed by statistical methods: dry bulb temperature, maximum and minimum temperature, precipitation, and number of rainy and snowy days. We have also used mean monthly temperature and precipitation data for analysis of drought spells for the period 1964-2005 to find out whether fluctuations in the lake level are attributable to natural drought. Our results indicate that mean precipitation has decreased by 9.2% and the average maximum temperature has increased by 0.8°C over these four decades. The seasonal changes are particularly visible in winter and spring. Results of the Palmer Drought Severity Index show that on average, drought episodes have hit the Urmia Lake Basin every 5years and most of them reached severe levels, but recent droughts have become more intense and last longe

The aim of this study was to determine the selectivity of monofilament gillnets with different mesh size for silver crucian carp in Eğirdir Lake. In this study, it was investigated that the selectivity of monofilament gillnets with nominal mesh size (stretched) with 32, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 mm and trammel nets with 100, 110, 120, 130, 140, 150 mm for catching of silver crucian carp. Fieldwork was carried out in two different stations of Eğirdir Lake, between January-2010 and December-2010 with a three-month period and a total of 4 catching operations. Share Each Length class Catch Total (SELECT) method was used to determine the selectivity parameters. In the experiments 1562 silver crucian carp species in ranges of the length between 7.9 cm-37.0 cm were caught. As a result of calculations made according to the bi-modal model which gave the lowest deviation, for gill nets optimum length (cm) was found as 8.77, 10.96, 13.70, 16.44, 19.18, 21.92, 24.66 for 32, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 mm mesh size; for trammel nets optimum length (cm) was found to be 24.90, 27.39, 29.88, 32.37, 34.86 for 100, 110, 120, 130 and 140 mm mesh size monofilament trammel nets, respectively

Three-factor asset pricing model and portfolio holdings of foreign investors: evidence from an emerging market – Borsa Istanbul

    Get PDF
This article contributes to the asset pricing literature by offering an alternative missing factor: the excess holdings of foreign investors. To incorporate this factor, we mimic the portfolio of foreign investors in Borsa Istanbul (BIST) with respect to portfolio preferences (foreign ownership) using the Fama and French’s three-factor model. Our findings suggest that market factor, size, and book-to-market (B/M) variables are still statistically significant and Jensen’s alpha is still not significant, and we obtain a statistically significant negative relationship between the excess return of foreign investors’ ownership and the return variation of a given portfolio
