Expansion of radio galaxies in a cosmologically evolving medium: Possible implications for the cosmic star-formation history
We compare earlier estimates of the volumes filled by lobes of radio galaxies
during the quasar era based upon non-evolving ambient media with new ones
assuming a strong cosmological evolution of the ambient medium. If the sources
remain active for over 10^8 years the volumes filled by them are found to be
comparable for the two scenarios. This strengthens our earlier inference that
much of the cosmic web of gaseous filaments, the site of galaxy formation, was
probably permeated by radio lobes during the quasar era and this could have
triggered extensive star formation and made large contributions to the spread
of magnetic fields and metals through the universe by z ~ 2.Comment: To appear in Bull. Astron. Soc. India; 10 pages, 3 Figures, basi.sty

Editorial: Translational insights into mechanisms and therapy of organ dysfunction in sepsis and trauma
Multiple organ dysfunction or even failure after sepsis or trauma is due to a dysregulated host response. Currently, besides (surgical) source control (e.g., control of bleeding or drainage of abscesses) and administration of antimicrobial drugs, therapeutic approaches are limited to supportive care. Advances in our understanding of the key pathophysiological pathways involved in the excessive inflammation triggered by trauma, sepsis and/or ischemia-reperfusion have had limited impact. The 28 article in this Research Topic focus on the molecular mechanisms behind (hyper) inflammation after sepsis or trauma, with special emphasis on preclinical and translational studies that target potential organ-protective and/or -resuscitative therapeutic strategies. Most studies report rodent models of trauma and elective surgery (three articles), non-microbial hyper-inflammation induced with endotoxin exposure (LPS; seven articles) and chemical pancreatitis (one article), and cecal ligation and puncture-induced sepsis (six articles). Additional papers summarize investigations of human material (six articles) or fully-resuscitated large animal models (two articles). These article are complimented by four reviews and a commentary
New Multiwavelength Observations of PKS 2155-304 and Implications for the Coordinated Variability Patterns of Blazars
The TeV blazar PKS 2155--304 was the subject of an intensive 2 week optical
and near-infrared observing campaign in 2004 August with the CTIO 0.9m
telescope. During this time, simultaneous X-ray data from RXTE were also
obtained. We compare the results of our observations to the results from two
previous simultaneous multiwavelength campaigns on PKS 2155-304. We conclude
that the correlation between the X-ray and UV/optical variability is strongest
and the time lag is shortest (only a few hours) when the object is brightest.
As the object becomes fainter, the correlations are weaker and the lags longer,
increasing to a few days. Based on the results of four campaigns, we find
evidence for a linear relationship between the mean optical brightness and lag
time of X-ray and UV/optical events. Furthermore, we assert that this behavior,
along with the different multiwavelength flare lag times across different flux
states is consistent with a highly relativistic shock propagating down the jet
producing the flares observed during a high state. In a quiescent state, the
variability is likely to be due to a number of factors including both the jet
and contributions outside of the jet, such as the accretion disk.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, to be published in the Astrophysical Journal,

How do gravity alterations affect animal and human systems at a cellular/tissue level?
The present white paper concerns the indications and recommendations of the SciSpacE Science Community to make progress in filling the gaps of knowledge that prevent us from answering the question: “How Do Gravity Alterations Affect Animal and Human Systems at a Cellular/Tissue Level?” This is one of the five major scientific issues of the ESA roadmap “Biology in Space and Analogue Environments”. Despite the many studies conducted so far on spaceflight adaptation mechanisms and related pathophysiological alterations observed in astronauts, we are not yet able to elaborate a synthetic integrated model of the many changes occurring at different system and functional levels. Consequently, it is difficult to develop credible models for predicting long-term consequences of human adaptation to the space environment, as well as to implement medical support plans for long-term missions and a strategy for preventing the possible health risks due to prolonged exposure to spaceflight beyond the low Earth orbit (LEO). The research activities suggested by the scientific community have the aim to overcome these problems by striving to connect biological and physiological aspects in a more holistic view of space adaptation effects

COVID-19 in children and adolescents in Europe: a multinational, multicentre cohort study
Background
To date, few data on paediatric COVID-19 have been published, and most reports originate from China. This study aimed to capture key data on children and adolescents with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection across Europe to inform physicians and health-care service planning during the ongoing pandemic.
Methods
This multicentre cohort study involved 82 participating health-care institutions across 25 European countries, using a well established research network—the Paediatric Tuberculosis Network European Trials Group (ptbnet)—that mainly comprises paediatric infectious diseases specialists and paediatric pulmonologists. We included all individuals aged 18 years or younger with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, detected at any anatomical site by RT-PCR, between April 1 and April 24, 2020, during the initial peak of the European COVID-19 pandemic. We explored factors associated with need for intensive care unit (ICU) admission and initiation of drug treatment for COVID-19 using univariable analysis, and applied multivariable logistic regression with backwards stepwise analysis to further explore those factors significantly associated with ICU admission.
Findings
582 individuals with PCR-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection were included, with a median age of 5·0 years (IQR 0·5–12·0) and a sex ratio of 1·15 males per female. 145 (25%) had pre-existing medical conditions. 363 (62%) individuals were admitted to hospital. 48 (8%) individuals required ICU admission, 25 (4%) mechanical ventilation (median duration 7 days, IQR 2–11, range 1–34), 19 (3%) inotropic support, and one (<1%) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Significant risk factors for requiring ICU admission in multivariable analyses were being younger than 1 month (odds ratio 5·06, 95% CI 1·72–14·87; p=0·0035), male sex (2·12, 1·06–4·21; p=0·033), pre-existing medical conditions (3·27, 1·67–6·42; p=0·0015), and presence of lower respiratory tract infection signs or symptoms at presentation (10·46, 5·16–21·23; p<0·0001). The most frequently used drug with antiviral activity was hydroxychloroquine (40 [7%] patients), followed by remdesivir (17 [3%] patients), lopinavir–ritonavir (six [1%] patients), and oseltamivir (three [1%] patients). Immunomodulatory medication used included corticosteroids (22 [4%] patients), intravenous immunoglobulin (seven [1%] patients), tocilizumab (four [1%] patients), anakinra (three [1%] patients), and siltuximab (one [<1%] patient). Four children died (case-fatality rate 0·69%, 95% CI 0·20–1·82); at study end, the remaining 578 were alive and only 25 (4%) were still symptomatic or requiring respiratory support.
Interpretation
COVID-19 is generally a mild disease in children, including infants. However, a small proportion develop severe disease requiring ICU admission and prolonged ventilation, although fatal outcome is overall rare. The data also reflect the current uncertainties regarding specific treatment options, highlighting that additional data on antiviral and immunomodulatory drugs are urgently needed.
