    Entomological characterization of malaria in northern Colombia through vector and parasite species identification, and analyses of spatial distribution and infection rates

    Background: Malaria remains a worldwide public health concern and, in Colombia, despite the efforts to stop malaria transmission, the incidence of cases has increased over the last few years. In this context, it is necessary to evaluate vector diversity, infection rates, and spatial distribution, to better understand disease transmission dynamics. This information may contribute to the planning and development of vector control strategies. Results: A total of 778 Anopheles mosquitoes were collected in fifteen localities of Córdoba from August 2015 to October 2016. Six species were identified and overall, Anopheles albimanus was the most widespread and abundant species (83%). Other species of the Nyssorhynchus subgenus were collected, including Anopheles triannulatus (13%), Anopheles nuneztovari (1%), Anopheles argyritarsis (< 1%) and two species belonging to the Anopheles subgenus: Anopheles pseudopunctipennis (3%) and Anopheles neomaculipalpus (< 1%). Four species were found naturally infected with two Plasmodium species: Anopheles nuneztovari was detected naturally infected with Plasmodium falciparum and Anopheles pseudopunctipennis with Plasmodium vivax, whereas An. albimanus and An. triannulatus were found infected with both parasite species and confirmed by nested PCR. Conclusions: In general, the obtained results were contrasting with previous studies in terms of the most abundant and widespread collected species, and regarding infection rates, which were higher than those previously reported. A positive relationship between mosquito local abundance at the locality level and human infection at the municipality level was found. Mosquito local abundance and the number of houses with mosquitoes in each village are factors explaining malaria human cases in these villages. The obtained results suggest that other factors related to the apparent variation in malaria eco-epidemiology in northern Colombia, must be identified, to provide health authorities with better decision tools aiming to design control and prevention strategies

    Spin waves in ultrathin ferromagnetic overlayers

    The influence of a non-magnetic metallic substrate on the spin wave excitations in ultrathin ferromagnetic overlayers is investigated for different crystalline orientations. We show that spin wave dumping in these systems occur due to the tunneling of holes from the substrate into the overlayer, and that the spin wave energies may be considerably affected by the exchange coupling mediated by the substrate.Comment: RevTeX 4, 7 pages, 5 figures; submitted to Phys.     The influence of electric field on the microstructure of nc-Si:H films produced by RF magnetron sputtering

    Hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon thin films were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering. Different bias fields (no bias–no ground, grounded and negative bias) were applied to the substrate. The effect of the ion bombardment on the structure, chemical composition and optical property were studied by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Rutherford backscattering (RBS) and optical transmission spectroscopy. The deposition rate and the optical bandgap decrease as the bias voltage increases from 0 to -50 V. The structural characterization indicates that compressive stress is developed in plane and tensile stress is induced in the growth direction.     Network Diversity Multiple Access in Rayleigh Fading Correlated Channels with Imperfect Channel and Collision Multiplicity Estimation

    Network diversity multiple access or NDMA is the family of algorithms with the highest potential throughput in the literature of signal-processing-assisted random access. NDMA uses the concept of protocol-induced retransmissions to create an adaptive source of physical (PHY) layer diversity. This adaptive diversity is used to resolve packet collisions (via signal separation) without the explicit need (or as a complement) of a multiple antenna receiver. This paper proposes a further improvement on the modelling of NDMA by considering the effects of imperfect channel and collision multiplicity estimation. In addition, this work considers channel correlation between consecutive retransmissions (i.e., temporal correlation). Conventionally, the analysis of NDMA assumes that any error in the collision multiplicity estimation translates into the loss of all contending packets. This is an optimistic assumption because even when the multiplicity has been correctly estimated, errors can still occur. On the other hand, it is also pessimistic because correct reception can also occur when the multiplicity has been incorrectly estimated.     Competing Jahn Teller distortions and ferrimagnetic ordering in the geometrically frustrated system Ni1 xCuxCr2O4

    Competing Jahn Teller distortions combined with geometrical frustration give rise to a rich phase diagram as a function of x Cu and temperature in the spinel system Ni1 xCuxCr2O4. The Jahn Teller distortion of the end members acts in opposite ways, with an elongation of the NiO4 tetrahedra resulting in a structural transition at TS1 317K in NiCr2O4, but a flattening in the CuO4 tetrahedra at TS1 846K in CuCr2O4. In both cases the symmetry is lowered from cubic Fd 3m to tetragonal I41 amd on cooling. In order to follow the influence of Jahn Teller active Ni2 and Cu2 ions on the structural and magnetic properties of chromium spinels, we have investigated a series of samples of Ni1 xCuxCr2O4 by x ray and neutron powder diffraction. In the critical range 0.10 lt; x Cu lt; 0.20, strong orthorhombic distortions were observed, where competing Jahn Teller activities between the Cu2 and Ni2 ions result in distortions along both the a and c axes. For Ni0.85Cu0.15Cr2O4, the orthorhombic structure Fddd is stabilized up to TS2 368 2 K, close to the first structural phase transition at TS1 374 2 K. A ferrimagnetic spin alignment of the Ni Cu and chromium atoms sets in at much lower temperature TC 95K in this compound. The end members NiCr2O4 and CuCr2O4 undergo this ferrimagnetic transition at TC 74 and 135 K, respectively. These transitions are accompanied by the structural change to the orthorhombic symmetry which relieves the frustration. NiCr2O4 and Ni0.85Cu0.15Cr2O4 undergo a second magnetic transition at TM2 24 and 67K due to a superimposed antiferromagnetic ordering of the Cr moments resulting in a noncollinear magnetic structure. In the system Ni1 xCuxCr2O4, the magnetic transitions TC and TM2 merge with increasing copper content up to x Cu similar to 0.5. For the Ni rich chromites, geometrical frustration causes a strong reduction of the chromium moments, where magnetic long range order coexists with a disordered spin liquid like or a reentrant spin glass like state.     Lower/Middle Ordovician (Arenigian) shallow-marine trace fossils of the Pochico Formation, southern Spain: palaeoenvironmental and palaeogeographic implications at the Gondwanan and peri-Gondwanan realm

    Nineteen ichnospecies belonging to thirteen ichnogenera (Archaeonassa, Catenichnus, Cochlichnus, Cruziana, Didymaulichnus, ?Diplichnites, Gordia, Lingulichnus, Lockeia, cf. Monocraterion, Planolites, Ptychoplasma, and Rusophycus) occur in the Pochico Formation (Arenigian) in the Aldeaquemada section, Sierra Morena, southern Spain, just above the Armorican Quartzite. They belong to the archetypal Cruziana ichnofacies, indicating a lower shoreface-upper offshore zone. The low degree of sediment reworking may be due to a high rate of sedimentation. The trace fossil assemblage, rich in large Cruziana, is typical of the Armorican Quartzite that developed on the margins of Gondwana and peri-Gondwanan microcontinents. The distribution of ichnofauna during the Early Ordovician was partly palaeogeographically controlled, although ichnological data from the literature point to paths of migration between Gondwana, Baltica and Laurentia. Differences between the ichnofauna of Gondwana and Baltica could be conditioned by facies (clastics in Gondwana and carbonates in Baltica) causing a taphonomic filter, because Cruziana requires diversified clastic deposits for preservation. The ichnofauna would also be influenced by trophic group amensalism between filter feeding and deposit feeding fauna, the former prevailing in Baltica and the latter in Gondwana.Se presenta el análisis sedimentológico/icnológico de los materiales de la Formación Pochico (Arenigian) de la sección de Aldeaquemada, Sierra Morena, Sur de España, provincia de Jaén, justo por encima la Cuarcita Armoricana. Se han reconocido diecinueve icnoespecies pertenecientes a trece icnogéneros (Archaeonassa, Catenichnus, Cochlichnus, Cruziana, Didymaulichnus, ?Diplichnites, Gordia, Lingulichnus, Lockeia, cf. Monocraterion, Planolites, Ptychoplasma, y Rusophycus). Las características icnológicas junto con los rasgos sedimentológicos permiten asignarlas a las icnofacies arquetípicas de Cruziana, comunes de las zonas de shoreface inferior a offshore superior. El grado de bioturbación relativamente bajo puede estar relacionado con una alta tasa de depósito. La asociación registrada, dominada por grandes Cruziana, es típica de la Cuarcita Armoricana desarrollada en los márgenes de Gondwana y peri-Gondwana. La distribucción de icnofósiles del Ordovícico temprano posee, en gran medida, un control paleogeográfico, aunque datos icnológicos procedentes de la literatura indican la existencia de migraciones entre Gondwana, Baltica y Laurentia. Las diferencias entre las asociaciones de Gondwana y Báltica pueden estar asociadas a las diferentes facies, con el dominio de materiales clásticos en Gondwana y de carbonatados en Báltica, causando un filtro tafonómico ya que el potencial de conservación de Cruziana es mucho mayor en las facies clásticas heterolíticas.     Down-regulation of thyroid transcription factor-1 gene expression in fetal lung hypoplasia is restored by glucocorticoids

    8 pages, 6 figures.The thyroid transcription factor (TTF)-1 has an essential role in lung morphogenesis and development. It is involved in the transcription of surfactant proteins (SP), which are critical in respiratory function. Neonates with congenital diaphragmatic hernia die of respiratory failure caused by pulmonary hypoplasia with associated biochemical immaturity. To gain new insights into the causes of this disorder and the effect of prenatal hormonal treatment on reducing mortality in these infants, we evaluated the expression of TTF-1 as marker of lung morphogenesis and SP-B as marker of lung maturity. Using a rat model of lung immaturity, we show that TTF-1 and SP-B messenger RNA (mRNA) levels are drastically reduced in congenital lung hypoplasia. Interestingly, prenatal dexamethasone (Dex) treatment increased both TTF-1 and SP-B mRNAs over control levels when administered to rats with lung hypoplasia, but it had no effect on TTF-1 or a moderate effect on SP-B mRNA when administered to control rats. TRH alone also increases TTF-1 and SP-B mRNA levels but to a lesser extent than Dex. When administered together with Dex, TRH counteracts the induction observed with the glucocorticoid. The decrease in TTF-1 mRNA levels in lung hypoplasia is paralleled by a down-regulation of TTF-1 protein levels, as well as by a decrease in the TTF-1/DNA complex when the TTF-1-binding site of the SP-B promoter was used as a probe. Both parameters were reestablished after glucocorticoid treatment. Moreover, the regulation of TTF-1 gene expression described in this report is accompanied by the same regulation in its promoter activity, as demonstrated in transfection experiments performed in H-441 human lung-derived adenocarcinoma cells. In conclusion, our data demonstrate, for the first time, that lung hypoplasia and the associated respiratory dysfunction caused by SP-B deficiency are caused, in part, by down-regulation of TTF-1 gene expression.     Palaeoenvironment of Eocene prodelta in Spitsbergen recorded by the trace fossil Phycosiphon incertum

    Ichnological, sedimentological and geochemical analyses were conducted on the Eocene Frysjaodden Formation in order to interpret palaeoenvironment prodelta sediments in the Central Basin of Spitsbergen. Phycosiphon incertum is the exclusive ichnotaxon showing differences in size, distribution, abundance and density, and relation to laminated/bioturbated intervals. Large P. incertum mainly occur dispersed, isolated and randomly distributed throughout the weakly laminated/non-laminated intervals. Small P. incertum occur occasionally in patches of several burrows within laminated intervals or as densely packed burrows in thin horizons in laminated intervals or constituting fully bioturbated intervals that are several centimetres thick. Ichnological changes are mainly controlled by oxygenation, although the availability of benthic food cannot be discarded.
