Generation of macroscopic superposition states with small nonlinearity
We suggest a scheme to generate a macroscopic superposition state
(Schrodinger cat state) of a free-propagating optical field using a beam
splitter, homodyne measurement and a very small Kerr nonlinear effect. Our
scheme makes it possible to considerably reduce the required nonlinear effect

Neutral Higgs bosons in the MNMSSM with explicit CP violation
Within the framework of the minimal non-minimal supersymmetric standard model
(MNMSSM) with tadpole terms, CP violation effects in the Higgs sector are
investigated at the one-loop level, where the radiative corrections from the
loops of the quark and squarks of the third generation are taken into account.
Assuming that the squark masses are not degenerate, the radiative corrections
due to the stop and sbottom quarks give rise to CP phases, which trigger the CP
violation explicitly in the Higgs sector of the MNMSSM. The masses, the
branching ratios for dominant decay channels, and the total decay widths of the
five neutral Higgs bosons in the MNMSSM are calculated in the presence of the
explicit CP violation. The dependence of these quantities on the CP phases is
quite recognizable, for given parameter values.Comment: 25 pages, 8 figure
Spontaneous Violation of the CP Symmetry in the Higgs Sector of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Model
The spontaneous violation of the CP symmetry in the next-to-minimal
supersymmetric standard Model (NMSSM) is investigated. It is found that the
spontaneous violation of the CP symmetry can occur in the Higgs sector of the
NMSSM for a wide region of the parameter space of the model, at the 1-loop
level where the radiative corrections due to the top quark and scalar-top quark
loops are found to generate the scalar-pseudoscalar mixings between the two
Higgs doublets of the NMSSM. In our model, we assume that the masses of the
left-handed and the right-handed scalar-top quarks are not degenerate. And we
investigate our model anaytically: We derive analytical formulae of the 1-loop
mass matrix for the neutral Higgs bosons. We calculate the upper bound on the
lightest neutral Higgs boson mass under the assumption. It is found to be about
140 GeV for our choice of parameter values in the presence of the spontaneous
violation of the CP symmetry in the NMSSM. Thus, the possibility of the
spontaneous violation of the CP symmetry is not completely ruled out in the
Higgs sector of the NMSSM if the masses of the left-handed and the right-handed
scalar-top quarks are not degenerate. Further, the phenomenology of the
- mixing within the context of our model is studied. The lower
bound on CP violating phase in the - mixing is found to increase

Does Migration Make You Happy?:A Longitudinal Study of Internal Migration and Subjective Well-Being

We investigate whether individuals who migrate within the UK become happier after the move than they were before, and whether the effect is permanent or transient. Using life-satisfaction responses from twelve waves of the British Household Panel Survey and employing a fixed-effects model, we derive a temporal pattern of migrants’ subjective well-being around the time of the migration event. Our findings make an original contribution by revealing that, on average, migration is preceded by a period when individuals experience a significant decline in happiness for a variety of reasons, including changes in personal living arrangements. Migration itself causes a boost in happiness, and brings people back to their initial levels. The research contributes, therefore, to advancing an understanding of migration in relation to set-point theory. Perhaps surprisingly, long-distance migrants are at least as happy as short-distance migrants despite the higher social and psychological costs involved. The findings of this paper add to the pressure to retheorize migration within a conceptual framework that accounts for social well-being from a life-course perspective.PostprintPeer reviewe

Generation of entangled coherent states via cross phase modulation in a double electromagnetically induced transparency regime
The generation of an entangled coherent state is one of the most important
ingredients of quantum information processing using coherent states. Recently,
numerous schemes to achieve this task have been proposed. In order to generate
travelling-wave entangled coherent states, cross phase modulation, optimized by
optical Kerr effect enhancement in a dense medium in an electromagnetically
induced transparency (EIT) regime, seems to be very promising. In this
scenario, we propose a fully quantized model of a double-EIT scheme recently
proposed [D. Petrosyan and G. Kurizki, {\sl Phys. Rev. A} {\bf 65}, 33833
(2002)]: the quantization step is performed adopting a fully Hamiltonian
approach. This allows us to write effective equations of motion for two
interacting quantum fields of light that show how the dynamics of one field
depends on the photon-number operator of the other. The preparation of a
Schr\"odinger cat state, which is a superposition of two distinct coherent
states, is briefly exposed. This is based on non-linear interaction via
double-EIT of two light fields (initially prepared in coherent states) and on a
detection step performed using a beam splitter and two photodetectors.
In order to show the entanglement of a generated entangled coherent state, we
suggest to measure the joint quadrature variance of the field. We show that the
entangled coherent states satisfy the sufficient condition for entanglement
based on quadrature variance measurement. We also show how robust our scheme is

The role of the Cucumber mosaic virus 2b protein in viral movement and symptom induction
The Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) 2b protein is a counter-defense factor and symptom determinant. Conserved domains in the 2b protein sequence were mutated in the 2b gene of strain Fny-CMV. The effects of these mutations were assessed by infection of Nicotiana tabacum, N. benthamiana, and Arabidopsis thaliana (ecotype Col-0) with mutant viruses and by expression of mutant 2b transgenes in A. thaliana. We confirmed that two nuclear localization signals were required for symptom induction and found that the N-terminal domain was essential for symptom induction. The C-terminal domain and two serine residues within a putative phosphorylation domain modulated symptom severity. Further infection studies were conducted using Fny-CMVΔ2b, a mutant that cannot express the 2b protein and that induces no symptoms in N. tabacum, N. benthamiana, or A. thaliana ecotype Col-0. Surprisingly, in plants of A. thaliana ecotype C24, Fny-CMVΔ2b induced severe symptoms similar to those induced by the wild-type virus. However, C24 plants infected with the mutant virus recovered from disease while those infected with the wild-type virus did not. Expression of 2b transgenes from either Fny-CMV or from LS-CMV (a mild strain) in Col-0 plants enhanced systemic movement of Fny-CMVΔ2b and permitted symptom induction by Fny-CMVΔ2b. Taken together, the results indicate that the 2b protein itself is an important symptom determinant in certain hosts. However, they also suggest that the protein may somehow synergize symptom induction by other CMV-encoded factors
Halfvortices in flat nanomagnets
We discuss a new type of topological defect in XY systems where the O(2)
symmetry is broken in the presence of a boundary. Of particular interest is the
appearance of such defects in nanomagnets with a planar geometry. They are
manifested as kinks of magnetization along the edge and can be viewed as
halfvortices with winding numbers \pm 1/2. We argue that halfvortices play a
role equally important to that of ordinary vortices in the statics and dynamics
of flat nanomagnets. Domain walls found in experiments and numerical
simulations are composite objects containing two or more of these elementary
defects. We also discuss a closely related system: the two-dimensional smectic

Applications of aerospace technology to petroleum extraction and reservoir engineering
Through contacts with the petroleum industry, the petroleum service industry, universities and government agencies, important petroleum extraction problems were identified. For each problem, areas of aerospace technology that might aid in its solution were also identified, where possible. Some of the problems were selected for further consideration. Work on these problems led to the formulation of specific concepts as candidate for development. Each concept is addressed to the solution of specific extraction problems and makes use of specific areas of aerospace technology
