    Board tasks in small firms: The importance of motivation and evaluations

    The attention to board of directors in small firms is increasing. Traditionally they have been considered to be passive and labeled paper boards or aunt boards. However, boards in small firms are now undergoing major changes. In this paper we test hypotheses of what makes boards active and allows them to contribute to value creation. Activity is seen in relation to board task involvement. Predictions based on agency theory, resource dependence theory and the resource based view of the firm are used to explore board task involvement. In a sample of 347 small firms we got strong support for hypotheses highlighting the use of the knowledge of the board members and various board maintenance tools, such as regular board evaluations, to increase board task involvement. Various contextual variables were included as control variables, but few were significantly related to board task involvement. Actionable advice to boards in small firms is provided

    Boards of Directorsñ€ℱ Contribution to Strategy: A Literature Review and Research Agenda

    Manuscript Type: Literature review.Research Question/Issue: Over the last four decades, research on the relationship between boards of directors and strategy has proliferated. Yet to date there is little theoretical and empirical agreement regarding the question of how boards of directors contribute to strategy. This review assesses the extant literature by highlighting emerging trends and identifying several avenues for future research.Research Findings/Insights: Using a content-analysis of 150 articles published in 23 manage-ment journals until 2007, we describe and analyze how research on boards of directors and strategy has evolved over time. We illustrate how topics, theories, settings and sources of data interact and influence insights about board-strategy relationships during three specific periods.Theoretical/Academic Implications: Our study illustrates that research on boards of directors and strategy evolved from normative and structural approaches to behavioral and cognitive approaches. Our results encourage future studies (i) to examine the impact of institutional and context-specific factors on the (expected) contribution of boards to strategy, and (ii) to apply alternative methods to fully capture the impact of board processes and dynamics on strategy-making.Practical/Policy Implications: The increasing interest in boards of directorsñ€ℱ contribution to strategy echoes a movement towards more strategic involvement of boards of directors. However, best governance practices and the emphasis on board independence and control may hinder the board contribution to the strategic decision-making.     FFF-based high-throughput sequence shortlisting to support the development of aptamer-based analytical strategies

    Aptamers are biomimetic receptors that are increasingly exploited for the development of optical and electrochemical aptasensors. They are selected in vitro by the SELEX (Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential Enrichment) procedure, but although they are promising recognition elements, for their reliable applicability for analytical purposes, one cannot ignore sample components that cause matrix effects. This particularly applies when different SELEX-selected aptamers and related truncated sequences are available for a certain target, and the choice of the aptamer should be driven by the specific downstream application. In this context, the present work aimed at investigating the potentialities of asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) with UV detection for the development of a screening method of a large number of anti-lysozyme aptamers towards lysozyme, including randomized sequences and an interfering agent (serum albumin). The possibility to work in native conditions and selectively monitor the evolution of untagged aptamer signal as a result of aptamer-protein binding makes the devised method effective as a strategy for shortlisting the most promising aptamers both in terms of affinity and in terms of selectivity, to support subsequent development of aptamer-based analytical devices.     The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on pornography habits: a global analysis of Google Trends

    As the COVID-19 spread globally, social distancing, self-isolation/quarantine, and national lockdowns have become crucial to control the pandemic. However, these measures may also lead to increases in social isolation, loneliness, and stress, which can alter the consumption of pornography habits. The aim of the study was thus to explore the interest pattern in pornography and coronavirus-themed pornography during the COVID-19 outbreak. Google Trends\uae was employed to determine the most popular porn websites (Porn, XNXX, PornHub, xVideos, and xHamster), and coronavirus-themed pornography worldwide and in six nations with different COVID-19 outbreak and self-isolation recommendations. We analyzed every search trend on Google\uae from January 9, 2020 to May 25, 2020 using \u201cjoint point regression analysis\u201d. Comparisons of week relative search volume (WRSV) and temporal patterns were analyzed to assess the change of interest in search terms during nations lockdowns. Paired t-test was used to compare WRSV values among the porn websites during the national lockdowns and the equivalent timespan of the weeks in the previous 4 years. The research trend of almost every keyword increased with significant inflection points for those nations with a straight \u201cstay at home orders\u201d (China, Italy, Spain, and France). \u201cPornHub\u201d and \u201cPorn\u201d showed the highest increase of interest worldwide with an average weekend percentage change (AWPC) of 4.9 and 3.8, respectively. The mean WRSV for keywords in USA and Sweden did not show a similar increase as the other nations. The WRSV percentage change with the historical data had a peak during the straight nations\u2019 lockdowns (p < 0.01). All the nations had a significant increase in WRSV coronavirus-themed pornography for each keyword (p < 0.01) with an AWPC, ranging worldwide between 18.5 and 61.8 (p < 0.01), after the beginning of self-quarantine. As strengths this study uses a big data technology to collect worldwide trend of interest, however, data are anonymous and do not allow analysis of subpopulation groups. In conclusion, we demonstrated an increased interest in pornography and coronavirus-themed pornography after the outbreak of COVID-19 in nations with a straight \u201cstay at home orders\u201d

    The cellular prion protein increases the uptake and toxicity of tdp-43 fibrils

    Cytoplasmic aggregation of the primarily nuclear TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) affects neurons in most amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and approximately half of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) cases. The cellular prion protein, PrPC, has been recognized as a common receptor and downstream effector of circulating neurotoxic species of several proteins involved in neurodegeneration. Here, capitalizing on our recently adapted TDP-43 real time quaking induced reaction, we set reproducible protocols to obtain standardized preparations of recombinant TDP-43 fibrils. We then exploited two different cellular systems (human SH-SY5Y and mouse N2a neuroblastoma cells) engineered to express low or high PrPC levels to investigate the link between PrPC expression on the cell surface and the internalization of TDP-43 fibrils. Fibril uptake was increased in cells overexpressing either human or mouse prion protein. Increased internalization was associated with detrimental consequences in all PrP-overexpressing cell lines but was milder in cells expressing the human form of the prion protein. As described for other amyloids, treatment with TDP-43 fibrils induced a reduction in the accumulation of the misfolded form of PrPC, PrPSc, in cells chronically infected with prions. Our results expand the list of misfolded proteins whose uptake and detrimental effects are mediated by PrPC, which encompass almost all pathological amyloids involved in neurodegeneration

    Use of transperineal fine needle aspiration of seminal vesicles to retrieve sperm in a man with obstructive azoospermia

    OBJECTIVE: To report the successful and feasible use of transperineal fine needle aspiration of seminal vesicles (FNASV) for sperm retrieval in obstructive azoospermia. DESIGN: Case report. SETTING: Outpatient care in institutional clinic. PATIENT(S): A 31-year-old man with obstructive azoospermia due to a middle prostatic m\ufcllerian cyst. INTERVENTION(S): Transperineal FNASV using a coaxial 17-gauge TruGuide needle. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Feasibility of sperm retrieval suitable for future in vitro fertilization. RESULT(S): Transperineal FNASV made it possible to aspirate 11 mL of fluid with a sperm count of 100 million/mL and 15% motility. This sample was cryopreserved for in vitro fertilization using intracytoplasmic sperm injection. CONCLUSION(S): Transperineal FNASV using a coaxial needle may be a further method for sperm retrieval to add to the repertoire of assisted reproduction technologies
