Bioeconomic Model for Decision-Making on Fattening Beef-Cattle

Profitability and competitiveness of agricultural systems it is closely related with the technology used. Economic and financial appraisal of investments on pasture improvements, facilities, feed and management plans, etc. are often required in order to make decisions. A bio-economic simulation model was developed in order to support decision making on beef-cattle grazing fattening. The aim of the model is to show the relationship between the technological alternative analysed in physical terms as well as financial and economic. By this way it is possible to asset and relate the bio-economic impact of the different animal and pasture management alternative technologies. Results show that the model could be used to support decision making when using stocking rates between 0.8 and 2.5 heads/ha

Bioeconomic analysis of Uruguayan cow-calf systems using a simulation model

ABSTRACT Uruguay is one of the major beef and sheep meat exporters countries. Its economy is highly dependent on livestock production, and cow-calf systems (CCS) are mainly carried out by small farmers under grazing conditions and consequently under the influence of a large number of interacting variables affecting productivity and especially the economic profit of the production systems. Compared to many other countries, fat cow/calf price ratio in Uruguay is significantly higher. Under the assumption that pregnancy diagnostic defines whether a cow is retained on the herd or cull to be fattened, and that those are sold with relatively high values, the hypothesis is that calf production and cow fattening are antagonistic activities inside the system. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of some key variables in CCS using a bioeconomic simulation model, with special emphasis on the interactions between pregnancy rate, age at first mating (AFM) and the relationship between calves and fat cow prices. The defined CCS has enough forage to fatten all cull cows and to rear heifers (15-17 % of improved pastures). Three AFM were compared; 14 months old, 26 years old and 50% of heifers at 14 months old and 50% at 26 months. In addition, two market scenarios defined by different calf/cow price ratios were assessed (1.49 vs 1.27). Results showed that increase on pregnancy has its economic counterpart reducing cull cows for fattening. In economic terms, the importance of pregnancy as an indicator of the farm success should be relativized, especially when the fattening system component is assisted by a favorable prices relationship and an efficient process of females replacement in the herd (early AFM). Simulation models are a useful tool to identify critical points and inefficiencies in Uruguayan's livestock systems, and to feedback research when looking for alternatives to overcome these limitations

A model of active and significative learning in the resolution of problems

In this paper we present a description and analysis of an activity held in the Mathematics courses in Engineering at the Universidade de Caxias do Sul. The research was planned taking into account requirements for the training of engineers. Analysis of activity indicates that major powers can be developed through active and significative learning strategies. Students who agreed to participate in the activity "Applications of Mathematics in Engineering" show, with their work, opportunities to run, successfully, the path between the "do" and "understand." These skills are related to the steps of the model of active and significative learning, proposed, and are discussed in the analysis of the works presented.Peer Reviewe

Niche differences may reduce susceptibility to competition between native and non‐native birds in oceanic islands

Aim Few bird extinctions on oceanic island have been attributed to competition with non-native species, even though it might be an overlooked driver of biodiversity loss. We evaluate the potential competition between native and non-native island bird species, identifying species and island characteristics that enhance it and may promote future extinctions. Location Seventy-three (>100 km2) oceanic islands worldwide. Methods We compiled a species list for each island and used single-trait meta-analyses to assess differences between native and non-native species. Then, we used single-trait beta regression models to identify species traits linked to potential competition. Finally, we used a trait-based approach to calculate the potential competition between native and non-native species on each island and identify island characteristics linked to potential competition. Results Native bird species tended to be smaller forest dwellers, that were either carnivore, frugivore or insectivore, and that foraged in flight, in the canopy or at mid-height. In contrast, non-native birds tended to be open habitat granivores, that were either ground or unspecialized foragers. Potential competition tended to be higher for native species with typical non-native traits and forest-dwelling unspecialized non-native species. Potential competition between native and non-native birds was consistently higher in islands that were larger, had more non-native birds or were drier. Main conclusions Niche differentiation of native and non-native species may explain the scarcity of reported competition-driven extinctions since non-natives clearly tend to favour and are better adapted to anthropogenic environments. However, the few non-native birds that occur in native ecosystems may be problematic. The loss of native ecosystems coupled with the introduction of species that might outcompete native species may enhance the relevance of competition in future island extinctions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
