On the soliton width in the incommensurate phase of spin-Peierls systems

We study using bosonization techniques the effects of frustration due to competing interactions and of the interchain elastic couplings on the soliton width and soliton structure in spin-Peierls systems. We compare the predictions of this study with numerical results obtained by exact diagonalization of finite chains. We conclude that frustration produces in general a reduction of the soliton width while the interchain elastic coupling increases it. We discuss these results in connection with recent measurements of the soliton width in the incommensurate phase of CuGeO_3.Comment: 4 pages, latex, 2 figures embedded in the tex

Acoustic and thermal transport properties of hard carbon formed from C_60 fullerene

We report on extended investigation of the thermal transport and acoustical properties on hard carbon samples obtained by pressurization of C60 fullerene. Structural investigations performed by different techniques on the same samples indicate a very inhomogeneous structure at different scales, based on fractal-like amorphous clusters on the micrometer to submillimeter scale, which act as strong acoustic scatterers, and scarce microcrystallites on the nanometer scale. Ultrasonic experiments show a rapid increase in the attenuation with frequency, corresponding to a decrease in the localization length for vibrations. The data give evidence for a crossover from extended phonon excitations to localized fracton excitations. The thermal conductivity is characterized by a monotonous increase versus temperature, power law T1.4, for T ranging from 0.1 to 10 K, without any well-defined plateau, and a strictly linear-in-T variation between 20 and 300 K. The latter has to be related to the linear-in-T decrease of the sound velocity between 4 and 100 K, both linear regimes being characteristic of disordered or generally aperiodic structures, which can be analyzed by the “phonon-fracton hopping” model developed for fractal and amorphous structures

Phenomenological model of elastic distortions near the spin-Peierls transition in CuGeO3CuGeO_3

A phenomenological model of the Landau type forms the basis for a study of elastic distortions near the spin-Peierls transition TcT_c in CuGeO3CuGeO_3. The atomic displacements proposed by Hirota {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 73}, 736 (1994)] are accounted for by the model which includes linear coupling between CuCu and OO distortions. CuCu displacements are seen to be responsible for anomalies in the elastic properties {\it at} TcT_c, whereas incipient OO distortions give rise to temperature dependence below TcT_c. A discussion of possible critical behavior is also made.Comment: 1 figure available upon reques

Accelerometer and self-reported measures of sedentary behaviour and associations with adiposity in UK youth

This study used accelerometer and self-report measures of overall sedentary time (ST) and screen time behaviours to examine their respective associations with adiposity among UK youth. Participants (Year groups 5, 8, and 10; n=292, 148 girls) wore the SenseWear Armband Mini accelerometer for eight days and completed the Youth Activity Profile, an online report tool designed to estimate physical activity and ST.Stature, body mass and waist circumference were measured to classify adiposity outcomes (overweight/obese and central obesity). One-way between groups ANOVA and adjusted linear, logistic and multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted. There was a significant main effect of age on total ST across the whole week (F(2, 289)=41.64, p≀0.001). ST increased monotonically across Year 5 (581.09±107.81 min·dˉÂč), 8 (671.96±112.59 min·dˉÂč) and 10 (725.80±115.20 min·dˉÂč), and all pairwise comparisons were significant at p≀0.001. A steep age-related gradient to mobile phone use was present (p≀0.001). ST was positively associated with adiposity outcomes independent of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA; p≀0.001). Engaging in >3 hours of video gaming daily was positively associated with central obesity (OR=2.12, p≀0.05) but not after adjustment for MVPA. Results further demonstrate the importance of reducing overall ST to maintain healthy weight status among UK youth
