    THE JUNK THAT 8 K-TOWN (View-Master Haiku Series 1, 2 & 3) My first session taking photos of bush junk near the K-Town train station led to an addiction. I started to see things within images that aroused deeper contemplation. The miniature Eiffel Tower within one landscape seemed to expertly align with a gasping car belly that paid homage to Peter Dam’s The Dogs That 7 Sparrows. Absent past owners became unconscious artists. Objects in their adopted environments became creatures with lives beyond previous incarnations. I saw things as representations, serendipitous alignments, but more importantly, a culture addicted to accumulating and discarding unwanted objects, no matter how obscene its scars upon the landscape. My girlfriend lives in K-Town but won’t go into the bush. She thinks dark magic draws people in and sucks the salt from them. There have been rapes and murders but it is the objects which remain that tell stories of the absent figures’ past lives entwined with the landscape. THE JUNK THAT 8 K-TOWN is a meditation upon landscape and abandoned objects. It asks the viewer to dream of absent figures and reimagine their deserted objects new relationships with the burdened landscape

    The results of numerical experiments are presented in which a posteriori estimators of error in strain energy were examined on the basis of a typical problem in linear elastic fracture mechanics. Two estimators were found to give close upper and lower bounds for the strain energy error. The potential significance of this is that the same estimators may provide a suitable basis for adaptive redistribution of the degrees of freedom in finite element models

    The possibilities and limitations of tailoring blade mass and stiffness distributions to give an optimum blade design in terms of weight, inertia, and dynamic characteristics are discussed. The extent that changes in mass of stiffness distribution can be used to place rotor frequencies at desired locations is determined. Theoretical limits to the amount of frequency shift are established. Realistic constraints on blade properties based on weight, mass, moment of inertia, size, strength, and stability are formulated. The extent that the hub loads can be minimized by proper choice of E1 distribution, and the minimum hub loads which can be approximated by a design for a given set of natural frequencies are determined. Aerodynamic couplings that might affect the optimum blade design, and the relative effectiveness of mass and stiffness distribution on the optimization procedure are investigated

    Model Bond albedos of extrasolar giant planets

    The atmospheres of extrasolar giant planets are modeled with various effective temperatures and gravities, with and without clouds. Bond albedos are computed by calculating the ratio of the flux reflected by a planet (integrated over wavelength) to the total stellar flux incident on the planet. This quantity is useful for estimating the effective temperature and evolution of a planet. We find it is sensitive to the stellar type of the primary. For a 5 M_Jup planet the Bond albedo varies from 0.4 to 0.3 to 0.06 as the primary star varies from A5V to G2V to M2V in spectral type. It is relatively insensitive to the effective temperature and gravity for cloud--free planets. Water clouds increase the reflectivity of the planet in the red, which increases the Bond albedo. The Bond albedo increases by an order of magnitude for a 13 M_Jup planet with an M2V primary when water clouds are present.     Experimental study of flow deflectors designed to alleviate ground winds induced by exhaust of 80-by 120-foot wind tunnel

    An experimental study directed at finding a deflector ramp that will reduce to an acceptable level the ground winds under the exhaust jet of the 80 by 120 Foot Wind Tunnel at NASA Ames Center is described. A one-fifieth scale model of the full-scale facility was used to investigate how the jet flow field was modified by the various design parameters of the ramp. It was concluded that the ground winds were alleviated sufficiently by a ramp with end plates located next to the wind tunnel building along the ground edge of the exhaust opening. At full scale, the ramp should have a slant length of 7.62 m (25 ft) or more, and would be elevated at about 45 degrees to the ground plane. The material should have holes less than 15.2 (6 in) in diameter distributed uniformly over its surface to produce a porosity of about 30%

    Factors Related to Average Concentric Velocity of Four Barbell Exercises at Various Loads

    The resistance exercise load is the primarily determinant of the average concentric velocity (ACV) during a repetition. It is unknown whether individual factors such as training experience or anthropometrics also influence the ACV. Previous research has shown the ACV during the 1 repetition maximum (1RM) varies between exercises, but it is not clear whether ACV is different between exercises at various percentages of the 1RM. This information could provide practical guidelines for trainees using ACV to select training loads. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether training age, current training frequency, limb length, height, and relative strength are related to ACV at loads between 35 and 100% of the 1RM for the squat, bench press, deadlift, and overhead press. A secondary purpose was to compare the ACV values between the 4 lifts at each relative load. Fifty-one (18 women and 33 men) completed 2 testing sessions in which the squat, bench press, deadlift, and overhead press ACV were measured during a modified 1RM protocol. Average concentric velocity values were significantly different among the 4 lifts (p \u3c 0.05) at all relative loads between 35 and 100% 1RM except for 55% 1RM (p = 0.112). Generally, compared at the same relative loads, the overhead press exhibited the greatest ACV followed by the squat, bench press, and deadlift (in order). In addition, relative strength level was inversely related to ACV at maximal loads (≥95% 1RM) for the squat, bench press, and deadlift while height was positively related to ACV at moderate loads (55% 1RM) for all lifts (p \u3c 0.05). These results suggest that the load-velocity profile is unique for each of these exercises, and that velocity ranges used for exercise prescription should be specific to the exercise. A trainee\u27s relative strength and height may be a primary influence on the ACV
