    The Connection is YOU: Public Service Announcement Campaign

    In an effort to raise civic awareness among SU students by encouraging volunteerism throughout their college career, I examined and defined four elements of community in the city of Syracuse: arts and entertainment, politics and government, youth and education, and homes and neighborhoods. I then utilized my Television-Radio-Film training to write, produce, direct, and edit four public service announcements (PSAs) in an integrated campaign titled The Connection is YOU. Each three-minute PSA illustrated a different element through a local organization—respectively, The Redhouse, Onondaga County Board of Elections,SouthwestCommunity Center, andWestcottCommunity Center. The PSAs are slated for distribution through Orange Television Network and UU Cinema starting in Fall 2005. Robert D. Putnam’s book Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community powerfully influenced my work by introducing me to the concept of social capital, which is the core idea that social networks have value, and that civic virtue is most powerful when embedded in a dense network of reciprocal social relations. By teaching students now where and how to connect with a community, I ensure that upon their graduation, they have the knowledge and experience to engage fully in the communities where they will live and work. The Connection is YOU campaign is a digital video project shot on Mini DV and DV-CAM equipment, edited with Final Cut Pro and Adobe After Effects programs, and recorded on DVD for highest quality resolution

    Versatile Electro-Dynamic Tethers Dynamics Simulator for Debris Mitigation Tools Design

    As far as the space debris mitigation is concerned, the electro-dynamic tethers (EDTs) represent a valuable alternative for de-orbiting. The paper presents a high accuracy numerical simulator developed to support the design and verify the effectiveness of such systems: accurate models are exploited for the mechanical, electrodynamical and environmental representation. Results confirmed the known instabilities of EDTs; to cope with them a control strategy is here proposed, traded off among different laws. The selected control relies on varying either the load resistance or the cathodic emitter voltage drop, at the system cathode, being the current profile the controlled variable. The sensitivity analysis, run on several design parameters, is presented and the interdependencies with stability and performance are discussed

    Modeling narrative features in TV series: coding and clustering analysis

    TV series have gained both economic and cultural relevance. Their development over time can hardly be traced back to the simple programmatic action of creative intentionality. Instead, TV series might be studied as narrative ecosystems with emergent trends and patterns. This paper aims to boost quantitative research in the field of media studies, first considering a comparative and data-driven study of the narrative features in the US medical TV series, one of the most popular and longest-running genres on global television. Based on a corpus of more than 400 h of video, we investigate the storytelling evolution of eight audiovisual serial products by identifying three main narrative features (i.e., isotopies). The implemented schematization allows to grasp the basic components of the social interactions showing the strength of the medical genre and its ability to rebuild, in its microcosm, the essential traits of the human macrocosm where random everyday life elements (seen in the medical cases plot) mix and overlap with working and social relationships (professional plot) and personal relationships (sentimental plot). This study relies on data-driven research that combines content analysis and clustering analysis. It significantly differs from traditional studies regarding the narrative features of medical dramas and broadly the field of television studies. We proved that the three isotopies are good descriptors for the medical drama genre and identified four narrative profiles which emphasize the strong stability of these serial products. Contrary to what is often taken for granted in many interpretative studies, creative decisions rarely significantly change the general narrative aspects of the wider series

    Development of a Particle-In-Cell code with Structured Adaptive Mesh Refinement for Plasma Focus devices breakdown simulation

    The aim at simulating the breakdown phase of a Plasma Focus (PF) discharge follows the need to fully understand the dynamics of such device, in order to retrieve useful information for the design and optimization of the machine itself. PFs are compact devices able to generate, accelerate, compress and confine a plasma by means of strongly varying electric and magnetic fields. In the final phase of the discharge, the generated plasma collapses in a high density region (the focus) where nuclear reactions occur. The choice of the gases composing the plasma tunes the nuclear reactions in order to characterize the device as a possible neutron-free Short-Life Radioisotopes (SLRs) generator for PET (f.i. 18F and 15O), as well as a neutrons or collimated-electrons-beams source for radio-therapy applications. An electrostatic-collisional Particle-In-Cell (PIC) code for Plasma Focus devices (es-cPIF) has already been developed to investigate the breakdown phenomenon and the formation of the plasma seed, the preliminary plasma spot, within the device: the exact knowledge of the phase space distribution function (strongly deviating from the Maxwellian equilibrium one) is a fundamental basis indeed for the whole discharge simulation. In order to extend the present simulations towards the complete evolution of the plasma seed into a running plasma sheath, the code is being re-structured for strong parallelization and inclusion of Structured Adaptive Mesh Refinement (SAMR) capabilities. In this paper the development frame as well as the software design architecture are presented together with the features that will be provided by the new SAMRes-cPIF code

    Acquisition of Information is Achieved by the Measurement Process in Classical and Quantum Physics

    No consensus seems to exist as to what constitutes a measurement which is still considered somewhat mysterious in many respects in quantum mechanics. At successive stages mathematical theory of measure, metrology and measurement theory tried to systematize this field but significant questions remain open about the nature of measurement, about the characterization of the observer, about the reliability of measurement processes etc. The present paper attempts to talk about these questions through the information science. We start from the idea, rather common and intuitive, that the measurement process basically acquires information. Next we expand this idea through four formal definitions and infer some corollaries regarding the measurement process from those definitions. Relativity emerges as the basic property of measurement from the present logical framework and this rather surprising result collides with the feeling of physicists who take measurement as a myth.     Fine structural analyses of pancreatic acinar cell nuclei from mice fed on genetically modified soybean

    We carried out ultrastructural morphometrical and immunocytochemical analyses on pancreatic acinar cell nuclei from mice fed on genetically modified (GM) soybean, in order to investigate possible structural and molecular modifications of nucleoplasmic and nucleolar constituents.We found a significant lowering of nucleoplasmic and nucleolar splicing factors as well as a perichromatin granule accumulation in GM-fed mice, suggestive of reduced post-transcriptional hnRNA processing and/or nuclear export. This is in accordance to already described zymogen synthesis and processing modifications in the same animals

    Density correlations in ultracold atomic Fermi gases

    We investigate density fluctuations in a coherent ensemble of interacting fermionic atoms. Adapting the concept of full counting statistics, well-known from quantum optics and mesoscopic electron transport, we study second-order as well as higher-order correlators of density fluctuations. Using the mean-field BCS state to describe the whole interval between the BCS limit and the BEC limit, we obtain an exact expression for the cumulant-generating function of the density fluctuations of an atomic cloud. In the two-dimensional case, we obtain a closed analytical expression. Poissonian fluctuations of a molecular condensate on the BEC side are strongly suppressed on the BCS side. The size of the fluctuations in the BCS limit is a direct measure of the pairing potential. We also discuss the BEC-BCS crossover of the third cumulant and the temperature dependence of the second cumulant.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. To appear in Phys. Rev. A.     SAM multipliers and subsystems: Structural analysis of the Basilicata’s agri-food sector

    Local agri-food products are conceived as a form of cultural capital, representing potentially fruitful resources for rural development. Italy and its regions offer a rich and diverse agricultural and food heritage that has led to the creation of numerous quality agri-food systems. Despite their ability to absorb disturbances and maintain their functions, it is important to develop economic models targeted to analyse the relationships among the components of food systems, in order to identify their strengths and weaknesses and drive the implementation of sectoral policies. In view of the new Rural Development Programme (2014-2020), the aim of this work is to analyse the structure of the Basilicata’s agri-food system using a multi-sector model based on a two-region SAM, specifically developed for Basilicata, an Italian region charac-terised by a highly specialised agri-food sector. Results show that the availability of a highly disaggregate multi-sector model of the regional economy may be a valuable supporting tool to design regional policies for innovation and for the development of rural areas, laying the foundation for further analysis
