    Vulnerability Reduction of Technology-Based Business research in the Last four Decades: A Bibliometric Analysis

    Natural and man-made disasters have increased the attention of practitioners and researchers to vulnerability. Identifying business vulnerability is one of the basic elements of strategic analysis and public policy. The purpose of this paper is to explore evolutionary pathways to reduce the vulnerability of technology-based businesses. The intellectual structure of this subject was examined using both bibliometric co-occurrence and co-citation analyses. We focused on 629 articles published between 1981 and 2021. This article identifies four specific areas. Business performance, small business vulnerability, sources of sustainability in business, and adaptation policy assessment. A novel framework was developed based on the most prominent papers identified in co-citation, and the highly cited papers. The proposed model includes drivers, vulnerability appearance, and vulnerability reduction. This study examines the basis of research concepts, themes, and communities in reducing the vulnerability of technology-based businesses. This article identifies business vulnerability as one of the relevant areas to disaster economics and sustainability studies

    Digital Technology and Marketing Management Capability: Achieving Growth in SMEs

    Purpose The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationships between digital technology, tangible/intangible assets and marketing capabilities to gain more insight into the factors related to small- and medium-sized enterprises’ (SMEs’) growth in the UK. Based on the resource-advantage theory, this research addresses the question “to what extent does digital technology influence marketing capability which leads to companies’ growth?” Design/methodology/approach Data were gathered through 21 in-depth interviews with managers from different multinational organizations and six focus groups with employees. Findings The study identifies the two key components of digital technology as information quality and service convenience. In addition, the relationships between digital technology, tangible/intangible assets and marketing capabilities perform the significant role of facilitator of a company’s growth. Research limitations/implications The focus on UK SMEs limits the generalizability of the results. Further studies should be conducted in other sectors and country settings to examine the associations identified in the current study. Originality/value This study identifies the main impacts of digital technology on intellectual/physical assets. While managers and employees have specified that marketing capability is significant for organizations, there are a few other areas of concern with regard to consequences related to a company’s growth, competence and core competence, particularly in an SME’s setting.     Attaining organisational agility through competitive intelligence: the roles of strategic flexibility and organisational innovation

    Organizational agility can play an important role in an organization’s emergent strategy for survival in an increasingly competitive market-place. This paper examines the impact of competitive intelligence on organizational agility through strategic flexibility and organizational innovation. We gathered data from 83 agency managers of insurance companies in Iran, using random simple sampling. These were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) with partial least squares (PLS). Competitive intelligence was found to have an indirect influence on organizational agility through strategic flexibility, which was a mediating variable. Though competitive intelligence influenced organizational innovation organizational innovation did not have a significant effect on organizational agility. Our research contributes to the organizational agility literature by showing that organizational agility is influenced by competitive intelligence but organizational innovation is not as significant as has been assumed, instead strategic flexibility is a more important factor and suggests the human factor may be key to a successful strategy

    Intrasheath subluxation of the peroneal tendons.

    BACKGROUND: Dislocation or subluxation of the peroneal tendons out of the peroneal groove under a torn or avulsed superior peroneal retinaculum has been well described. We identified a new subgroup of patients with intrasheath subluxation of these tendons within the peroneal groove and with an otherwise intact retinaculum. METHODS: The cases of fifty-seven patients with painful snapping of the peroneal tendons posterior to the fibula were reviewed. Of these, forty-three had tendons that could be reproducibly subluxated out of the groove with a dorsiflexion-eversion maneuver of the ankle. Fourteen patients who could not subluxate the tendons out of the groove underwent a dynamic ultrasound examination of the tendons. While the same dorsiflexion and eversion maneuver was being performed, the tendons were seen to switch their relative positions (the peroneus longus came to lie deep to the peroneus brevis tendon) with a reproducible painful click. All fourteen patients underwent a peroneal groove-deepening procedure with retinacular reefing. Intraoperatively, thirteen patients were found to have a convex peroneal groove and all fourteen had an intact peroneal retinaculum. All patients subsequently underwent a follow-up dynamic ultrasound examination and an American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot score evaluation at a minimum of twenty-four months after surgery. RESULTS: All fourteen patients were female, with an average age of thirty-five years. Two subtypes of intrasheath subluxation were found. Type A (ten patients) involved intact tendons with relative switching of their anatomic alignment. Type B (four patients) involved a longitudinal split within the peroneus brevis tendon through which the longus tendon subluxated. Intraoperative confirmation of the ultrasound findings was 100%. At an average follow-up interval of thirty-three months, the average AOFAS score had improved from 61 points preoperatively to 93 points, and the average score on the 10-cm visual analog pain scale had improved from 6.8 to 1.2. Follow-up ultrasound evaluation revealed healed tendons without persistent subluxation in thirteen patients. Nine patients rated the result as excellent, four rated it as good, and one rated it as fair. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with retrofibular pain and clicking of the peroneal tendons may not have demonstrable subluxation on physical examination and may have an intact superior peroneal retinaculum. They may have an intrasheath subluxation of the peroneal tendons, which can be confirmed with use of a dynamic ultrasound. Surgical repair of tendon tears combined with a peroneal groove-deepening procedure with retinacular reefing is a reproducibly effective procedure for this condition

    Nerve growth factor receptors in dementia

    Background/aim: Nerve growth factor (NGF) promotes the survival and differentiation of sensory and sympathetic neurons. Several studies have found that certain neuropathological factors stimulate NGF receptor expression and release the truncated nerve growth factor receptor (TNGFR) to biological fluids. The aim of this pilot study was to determine urine TNGFR levels in patients with dementia and to verify whether TNGFR can be used as a biomarker of dementia. Materials and methods: Twelve patients with dementia and 12 healthy individuals were asked to voluntarily participate in this study. Ages, sexes, and weights were matched. The first morning urine samples were collected and the concentrations of TNGFR in the urine samples were measured by fluoroimmunoassay. Results: The mean levels of TNGFR in the urine samples of the healthy control subjects and the patients with dementia were 164 +/- 23 and 341 +/- 66 ng / mg creatinine respectively. A positive relationship was found between the levels of TNGFR in different ages of both control and patient subgroups. This is consistent with the previous observations that pathological condition may stimulate the NGF receptor expression. Conclusion: These findings might be of assistance to evaluate the development of the memory loss associated with Alzheimer disease and other age-associated diseases

    Social perception drives eye-movement related brain activity: evidence from pro- and anti-saccades to faces

    Social stimuli such as faces attract and retain attention to a greater extent than other objects. Using fMRI, we investigated how the activity of oculomotor and visual brain regions is modulated when participants look towards or away from visual stimuli belonging to different categories (faces and cars). We identified a region within the superior frontal sulcus showing greater difference between anti- and pro-saccades to faces than to cars, and thereby supporting inhibitory control in a social context. In contrast, ventral occipito-temporal regions and the amygdala, which are associated with face perception, showed higher activity for pro-saccades than anti-saccades for faces, but the reverse for cars, suggesting that contextual, top-down mechanisms modulate the functional specialisation of areas involved in perception. In addition, during saccades in the presence of faces, we found increased functional connectivity between the frontal eye-fields and other cortical and subcortical oculomotor structures, namely the inferior frontal eye field, the posterior parietal cortex and the basal ganglia, possibly reflecting the higher demand put on the oculomotor system to inhibit responses to socially salient stimuli. For the first time, these data highlight neural bases for the different orienting responses towards or away from faces as compared to other objects

    Assessment of Corrosion Potential of Coarse Backfill Aggregates for Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls

    The service life of mechanically stabilized earth walls depends on the rate of corrosion of the metallic reinforcements used in their construction. The assessment of corrosion potential requires an accurate evaluation of pH, resistivity, and sulfate and chloride concentrations of aqueous solutions in contact with the surrounding aggregate. Highway agencies tend to use larger aggregates that contain only a small amount of fine material (passing the Number 40 sieve) in the backfill. Evaluation of the electrochemical parameters of coarse aggregates is challenging because traditional evaluation methods call for the use of fine material. In this study, the suitability of traditional soil characterization techniques for use with coarse aggregates was assessed through leaching experiments performed on coarse limestone and dolomite aggregates from six quarries in Texas. Chemical differences were isolated from size-related kinetic leaching effects by comparing the results from same-sized material collected in the field with material derived from the crushing of larger (≥ 3/8 in.) aggregates in the laboratory. The testing demonstrated that the fines collected from the field were enriched in chemicals that, when exposed to water, decreased pH and resistivity and increased sulfate concentrations compared with the bulk rock. This was likely the result of sulfur compounds in the atmosphere reacting with carbonate rocks to produce reactive surface layers that were mechanically abraded into the fines. This phenomenon could bias traditional soil testing results and, therefore, the assessment of corrosion potential. This study demonstrated that a more accurate assessment of the electrochemical parameters can be obtained by crushing the coarse material to meet testing size specifications
