This is a narrative account, reflected from the author’s perspective, of three teachers’ resistance to the formulation of metrication and fabrication arising from the influence of STEM in science education. It focuses on the ways transformative science teaching challenges this obstacle viewed through the lens of Critical Realism and how social justice is meshed into science pedagogy
Black hole polarization and new entropy bounds
Zaslavskii has suggested how to tighten Bekenstein's bound on entropy when
the object is electrically charged. Recently Hod has provided a second tighter
version of the bound applicable when the object is rotating. Here we derive
Zaslavskii's optimized bound by considering the accretion of an ordinary
charged object by a black hole. The force originating from the polarization of
the black hole by a nearby charge is central to the derivation of the bound
from the generalized second law. We also conjecture an entropy bound for
charged rotating objects, a synthesis of Zaslavskii's and Hod's. On the basis
of the no hair principle for black holes, we show that this last bound cannot
be tightened further in a generic way by knowledge of ``global'' conserved
charges, e.g., baryon number, which may be borne by the object.Comment: 21 pages, RevTex, Regularization of potential made clearer. Error in

Education and articulation: Laclau and Mouffe’s radical democracy in school
This paper outlines a theory of radical democratic education by addressing a key concept in Laclau and Mouffe’s Hegemony and Socialist Strategy: articulation. Through their concept of articulation, Laclau and Mouffe attempt to liberate Gramsci’s theory of hegemony from Marxist economism, and adapt it to a political sphere inhabited by a plurality of struggles and agents none of which is predominant. However, while for Gramsci the political process of hegemony formation has an explicit educational dimension, Laclau and Mouffe ignore this dimension altogether. My discussion starts with elaborating the concept of articulation and analysing it in terms of three dimensions: performance, connection and transformation. I then address the role of education in Gramsci’s politics, in which the figure of the intellectual is central, and argue that radical democratic education requires renouncing that figure. In the final section, I offer a theory of such education, in which both teacher and students articulate their political differences and identities
Planetary Education and Outreach Using the NOAA Science on a Sphere
Science On a Sphere (SOS) is a large visualization system, developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAH), that uses computers running Redhat Linux and four video projectors to display animated data onto the outside of a sphere. Said another way, SOS is a stationary globe that can show dynamic, animated images in spherical form. Visualization of cylindrical data maps show planets, their atmosphere, oceans, and land, in very realistic form. The SOS system uses 4 video projectors to display images onto the sphere. Each projector is driven by a separate computer, and a fifth computer is used to control the operation of the display computers. Each computer is a relatively powerful PC with a high-end graphics card. The video projectors have native XGA resolution. The projectors are placed at the corners of a 30' x 30' square with a 68" carbon fiber sphere suspended in the center of the square. The equator of the sphere is typically located 86" off the floor. SOS uses common image formats such as JPEG, or TIFF in a very specific, but simple form; the images are plotted on an equatorial cylindrical equidistant projection, or as it is commonly known, a latitude/longitude grid, where the image is twice as wide as it is high (rectangular). 2048x] 024 is the minimum usable spatial resolution without some noticeable pixelation. Labels and text can be applied within the image, or using a timestamp-like feature within the SOS system software. There are two basic modes of operation for SOS: displaying a single image or an animated sequence of frames. The frame or frames can be setup to rotate or tilt, as in a planetary rotation. Sequences of images that animate through time produce a movie visualization, with or without an overlain soundtrack. After the images are processed, SOS will display the images in sequence and play them like a movie across the entire sphere surface. Movies can be of any arbitrary length, limited mainly by disk space and can be animated at frame rates up to 30 frames per second. Transitions, special effects, and other computer graphics techniques can be added to a sequence through the use of off-the-shelf software, like Final Cut Pro. However, one drawback is that the Sphere cannot be used in the same manner as a flat movie screen; images cannot be pushed to a "side", a highlighted area must be viewable to all sides of the room simultaneously, and some transitions do not work as well as others. Electrostatic self-energy and Bekenstein entropy bound in the massive Schwinger model
We obtain the electrostatic energy of two opposite charges near the horizon
of stationary black-holes in the massive Schwinger model. Besides the confining
aspects of the model, we discuss the Bekenstein entropy upper bound of a
charged object using the generalized second law. We show that despite the
massless case, in the massive Schwinger model the entropy of the black hole and
consequently the Bekenstein bound are altered by the vacuum polarization.Comment: 14 pages, accepted for publication in "Gen. Rel. Grav. (2005)
The influence of distributed leadership on teachers' organizational commitment: a multilevel approach
In the present study the effects of a cooperative leadership team, distributed leadership, participative decision-making, and context variables on teachers' organizational commitment are investigated. Multilevel analyses on data from 1522 teachers indicated that 9% of the variance in teachers' organizational commitment is attributable to differences between schools. The analyses revealed that especially the presence of a cooperative leadership team and the amount of leadership support played a significantly positive key role in predicting teachers' organizational commitment. Also, participative decision-making and distribution of the supportive leadership function had a significant positive impact on teachers' organizational commitment. In contrast, distribution of the supervisory leadership function and teachers' job experience had a significant negative impact
Planet Hunters: Assessing the Kepler Inventory of Short Period Planets
We present the results from a search of data from the first 33.5 days of the
Kepler science mission (Quarter 1) for exoplanet transits by the Planet Hunters
citizen science project. Planet Hunters enlists members of the general public
to visually identify transits in the publicly released Kepler light curves via
the World Wide Web. Over 24,000 volunteers reviewed the Kepler Quarter 1 data
set. We examine the abundance of \geq 2 R\oplus planets on short period (< 15
days) orbits based on Planet Hunters detections. We present these results along
with an analysis of the detection efficiency of human classifiers to identify
planetary transits including a comparison to the Kepler inventory of planet
candidates. Although performance drops rapidly for smaller radii, \geq 4
R\oplus Planet Hunters \geq 85% efficient at identifying transit signals for
planets with periods less than 15 days for the Kepler sample of target stars.
Our high efficiency rate for simulated transits along with recovery of the
majority of Kepler \geq 4 R\oplus planets suggest suggests the Kepler inventory

Altruism can proliferate through group/kin selection despite high random gene flow
The ways in which natural selection can allow the proliferation of
cooperative behavior have long been seen as a central problem in evolutionary
biology. Most of the literature has focused on interactions between pairs of
individuals and on linear public goods games. This emphasis led to the
conclusion that even modest levels of migration would pose a serious problem to
the spread of altruism in group structured populations. Here we challenge this
conclusion, by analyzing evolution in a framework which allows for complex
group interactions and random migration among groups. We conclude that
contingent forms of strong altruism can spread when rare under realistic group
sizes and levels of migration. Our analysis combines group-centric and
gene-centric perspectives, allows for arbitrary strength of selection, and
leads to extensions of Hamilton's rule for the spread of altruistic alleles,
