    Monitoring anthelmintic resistance in Queensland sheep flocks

    Development of anthelmintic resistance in Australian sheep flocks over the past 20 years has caused concern for sustainable sheep and wool production.1 Resistance was first reported in 1968, and by the mid-1980s resistance of the important sheep nematode species (Haemonchus, Ostertagia and Trichostrongylus) to a range of anthelmintics had been described. In a survey conducted during 1991/92, the prevalence of resistance to benzimidazole and levamisole anthelmintics was estimated to be 86 and 65%, respectively. Resistance to macrocyclic lactone anthelmintics was not detected, however resistance to ivermectin was subsequently reported. Factors associated with the emergence of resistance include excessive use of anthelmintics, underdosing and use of faulty equipment. Regional control programs, based on monitoring flock faecal egg counts (FECs), have been developed and promoted to control anthelmintic resistance. To better advise producers on the most effective anthelmintics to use, it is essential to have information on the regional anthelmintic resistance status of flocks.     Understanding stakeholder interactions in urban partnerships

    This paper aims to better understand urban partnerships through the nature of the interactions between their stakeholders. Following a review of approaches to stakeholder arrangements in urban partnerships, which draws on a variety of literatures, including strategic management, public administration, urban studies and geography, the paper presents results of an action-case study undertaken in an urban partnership context – namely, Houldsworth Village Partnership (HVP) – within the Greater Manchester region of the UK. The findings begin by classifying HVP stakeholders along broad sectoral lines, before moving to examine, through a thematic analysis of data, the influences on their interactions in terms of ‘process enablers’ and ‘inhibitors’. This leads to a schema, whereby HVP stakeholder interactions are conceptualized on the dual continua of attitude and behavior. The schema provides a theoretical contribution by offering an understanding of stakeholders' dynamic interplay within an urban partnership context, and a means of classifying such stakeholders beyond their individual/organizational characteristics or sectoral affiliations

    A pre-Caloris synchronous rotation for Mercury

    The planet Mercury is locked in a spin-orbit resonance where it rotates three times about its spin axis for every two orbits about the Sun. The current explanation for this unique state assumes that the initial rotation of this planet was prograde and rapid, and that tidal torques decelerated the planetary spin to this resonance. When core-mantle boundary friction is accounted for, capture into the 3/2 resonance occurs with a 26% probability, but the most probable outcome is capture into one of the higher-order resonances. Here we show that if the initial rotation of Mercury were retrograde, this planet would be captured into synchronous rotation with a 68% probability. Strong spatial variations of the impact cratering rate would have existed at this time, and these are shown to be consistent with the distribution of pre-Calorian impact basins observed by Mariner 10 and MESSENGER. Escape from this highly stable resonance is made possible by the momentum imparted by large basin-forming impact events, and capture into the 3/2 resonance occurs subsequently under favourable conditions.Comment: Nature Geosci., 201

    Survivability of copper projectiles during hypervelocity impacts in porous ice: A laboratory investigation of the survivability of projectiles impacting comets or other bodies

    AbstractDuring hypervelocity impact (>a few kms−1) the resulting cratering and/or disruption of the target body often outweighs interest on the outcome of the projectile material, with the majority of projectiles assumed to be vaporised. However, on Earth, fragments, often metallic, have been recovered from impact sites, meaning that metallic projectile fragments may survive a hypervelocity impact and still exist within the wall, floor and/or ejecta of the impact crater post-impact. The discovery of the remnant impactor composition within the craters of asteroids, planets and comets could provide further information regarding the impact history of a body. Accordingly, we study in the laboratory the survivability of 1 and 2mm diameter copper projectiles fired onto ice at speeds between 1.00 and 7.05kms−1. The projectile was recovered intact at speeds up to 1.50kms−1, with no ductile deformation, but some surface pitting was observed. At 2.39kms−1, the projectile showed increasing ductile deformation and broke into two parts. Above velocities of 2.60kms−1 increasing numbers of projectile fragments were identified post impact, with the mean size of the fragments decreasing with increasing impact velocity. The decrease in size also corresponds with an increase in the number of projectile fragments recovered, as with increasing shock pressure the projectile material is more intensely disrupted, producing smaller and more numerous fragments. The damage to the projectile is divided into four classes with increasing speed and shock pressure: (1) minimal damage, (2) ductile deformation, start of break up, (3) increasing fragmentation, and (4) complete fragmentation. The implications of such behaviour is considered for specific examples of impacts of metallic impactors onto Solar System bodies, including LCROSS impacting the Moon, iron meteorites onto Mars and NASA’s “Deep Impact” mission where a spacecraft impacted a comet

    Impact on and use of health services by international migrants: questionnaire survey of inner city London A&E attenders

    BACKGROUND: Changing immigration trends pose new challenges for the UK's open access health service and there is considerable speculation that migrants from resource-poor countries place a disproportionate burden on services. Data are needed to inform provision of services to migrant groups and to ensure their access to appropriate health care. We compared sociodemographic characteristics and impact of migrant groups and UK-born patients presenting to a hospital A&E/Walk-In Centre and prior use of community-based General Practitioner (GP) services. METHODS: We administered an anonymous questionnaire survey of all presenting patients at an A&E/Walk-In Centre at an inner-city London hospital during a 1 month period. Questions related to nationality, immigration status, time in the UK, registration and use of GP services. We compared differences between groups using two-way tables by Chi-Square and Fisher's exact test. We used logistic regression modelling to quantify associations of explanatory variables and outcomes. RESULTS: 1611 of 3262 patients completed the survey (response rate 49.4%). 720 (44.7%) were overseas born, representing 87 nationalities, of whom 532 (73.9%) were new migrants to the UK (≀10 years). Overseas born were over-represented in comparison to local estimates (44.7% vs 33.6%; p < 0.001; proportional difference 0.111 [95% CI 0.087–0.136]). Dominant immigration status' were: work permit (24.4%), EU citizens (21.5%), with only 21 (1.3%) political asylum seekers/refugees. 178 (11%) reported nationalities from refugee-generating countries (RGCs), eg, Somalia, who were less likely to speak English. Compared with RGCs, and after adjusting for age and sex, the Australians, New Zealanders, and South Africans (ANS group; OR 0.28 [95% CI 0.11 to 0.71]; p = 0.008) and the Other Migrant (OM) group comprising mainly Europeans (0.13 [0.06 to 0.30]; p = 0.000) were less likely to have GP registration and to have made prior contact with GPs, yet this did not affect mode of access to hospital services across groups nor delay access to care. CONCLUSION: Recently arrived migrants are a diverse and substantial group, of whom migrants from refugee-generating countries and asylum seekers comprise only a minority group. Service reorganisation to ensure improved access to community-based GPs and delivery of more appropriate care may lessen their impact on acute services
