    Market returns and mutual fund flows

    With the increased popularity of mutual funds come increased concerns. Namely, could a sharp drop in stock and bond prices set off a cascade of redemptions by mutual fund investors and could the redemptions exert further downward pressure on asset markets? The authors analyze this relationship by using instrumental variables--a measuring technique previously unapplied to market returns and mutual fund flows--to determine the effect of returns on flows. Despite market observers' fears of a downward spiral in asset prices, the authors conclude that the short-term effect of market returns on mutual fund flows typically has been too weak to sustain such a spiral.Mutual funds ; Stock - Prices

    A Measurement of Campus Presence: The Cognitive Link Between Campus Engagement and Positive Outcomes in College Students

    Prior research has shown that positive psychological states and attitudes are known outcomes in students who are engaged on their college campus. Although many studies prove this to be evident, literature lacks examination between these two variables. The purpose of the current study was to find a cognitive link between student engagement and the measured outcomes of self-esteem, college self-efficacy, college affiliation, and levels of optimism/pessimism. The study proposed that there is a process of developing an internal sense of presence on campus, which occurs in those students that are actively engaged in activities outside of the classroom. Individual personality traits are additionally measured as a variable for tendencies of involvement. Measurements of presence level in students were analyzed by administering a Campus Presence Scale, modified from the Witmer & Singer Presence Scale. The study subscales that examine levels of student engagement and its outcomes were measured in an online questionnaire format via Qualtrics. A total of 371 students at the University of Central Florida participated in the study. This study hypothesized that students who spend more time on campus engaged in co-curricular activities would display higher levels of presence development. The study also sought a flow of development in these processes, hypothesizing that campus presence mediates the actions in which students engage and their psychological well-being and attitudes towards their institution. Analyses in SPSS were used to examine these relationships. Results indicated that presence is significantly correlated with higher student self-esteem, self-efficacy, college affiliation, and optimism.     Measurement of mesoscopic High-TcT_c superconductors using Si mechanical micro-oscillators

    In a superconducting mesoscopic sample, with dimensions comparable to the London penetration depth, some properties are qualitatively different to those found in the bulk material. These properties include magnetization, vortex dynamics and ordering of the vortex lattice. In order to detect the small signals produced by this kind of samples, new instruments designed for the microscale are needed. In this work we use micromechanical oscillators to study the magnetic properties of a Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8 + \delta} disk with a diameter of 13.5 microns and a thickness of 2.5 microns. The discussion of our results is based on the existence and contribution of inter and intra layer currents.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

    Nitrogen States In Ga(as,p) And The Long-range, Short-range Model: A Systematic Study

    The long-range, short-range model of the nitrogen isoelectronic impurity in Ga(As,P) is discussed in terms of the results of recent photoluminescence and lifetime measurements. The predictions of the theory are shown to depend sensitively upon the strength of the coupling among the states produced separately by the long- and short-range parts of the potential: The strength of the coupling reflects the specific model of potential used in all cases treated. Strong coupling yields theoretical energies whose general composition dependence mirrors the features of the data. The effect of consideration of the L-conduction-band minima is smaller. Determination of potential parameters from experimental energies indicates a range 20-25. Luminescence calculations require an accurate treatment of the continuum contribution. Predictions of the theory are in good agreement with available data. Inclusion of L indicates the existence of an excited nitrogen state in GaP. No internal inconsistencies in the theory are found. © 1980 The American Physical Society.2183478349

    Weeds enhance pollinator diversity and fruit yield in mango

    Agriculture is dependent on insect pollination, yet in areas of intensive production agriculture, there is often a decline in plant and insect diversity. As native habitats and plants are replaced, often only the weeds or unwanted vegetation persist. This study compared insect diversity on mango, Mangifera indica, a tropical fruit tree dependent on insect pollination, when weeds were present in cultivation versus when they were removed mechanically. The pollinating insects on both weeds and mango trees were examined as well as fruit set and yield in both the weed-free and weedy treatment in South Florida. There were significantly more pollinators and key pollinator families on the weedy mango trees, as well as significantly greater fruit yield in the weedy treatment compared to the weed-free treatment. Utilizing weeds, especially native species, as insectary plants can help ensure sufficient pollination of mango and increase biodiversity across crop monocropping systems

    Translating genetic and preclinical findings into autism therapies

    Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social deficits and repetitive/restrictive interests. ASD is associated with multiple comorbidities, including intellectual disability, anxiety, and epilepsy. Evidence that ASD is highly heritable has spurred major efforts to unravel its genetics, revealing possible contributions from hundreds of genes through rare and common variation and through copy-number changes. In this perspective, we provide an overview of the current state of ASD genetics and of how genetic research has spurred the development of in vivo and in vitro models using animals and patient cells to evaluate the impact of genetic mutations on cellular function leading to disease. Efforts to translate these findings into successful therapies have yet to bear fruit. We discuss how the valuable insight into the disorder provided by these new models can be used to better understand ASD and develop future clinical trials
