Exhumation of the Sierra de Cameros (Iberian Range, Spain): constraints from low-temperature thermochronology
We present new fission-track and (U–Th)/He data from apatite and zircon in order to
reconstruct the exhumation of the Sierra de Cameros, in the northwestern part of Iberian Range,
Spain. Zircon fission-track ages from samples from the depocentre of the basin were reset
during the metamorphic peak at approximately 100 Ma. Detrital apatites from the uppermost sediments
retain fission-track age information that is older than the sediment deposition age, indicating
that these rocks have not exceeded 110 8C. Apatites from deeper in the stratigraphic sequence of
the central part of the basin have fission-track ages of around 40 Ma, significantly younger than
the stratigraphic age, recording the time of cooling after peak metamorphic conditions. Apatite
(U–Th)/He ages in samples from these sediments are 31–40 Ma and record the last period of
cooling during Alpine compression. The modelled thermal history derived from the uppermost
sediments indicates that the thermal pulse associated with peak metamorphism was rapid, and
that the region has cooled continuously to the present. The estimated palaeogeothermal gradient
is around 86 8C km21 and supports a tectonic model with a thick sedimentary fill (c. 8 km) and
explains the origin of the low-grade metamorphism observed in the oldest sediments
Ectoparasites on bats (Gamasida, Ixodida, Diptera) in Biscay (N lberian peninsula)
A study on ectoparasites infesting Chiroptera in Biscay (N lberian peninsula) was carried out during a distribution survey of bats. 160 potential hosts were examined and 664 ectoparasites were found, collected manually from living bats by means of pointed tweezers. The ectoparasites belonged to 12 species and 2 subspecies: 5 species and 2 subspecies of Gamasida, 2 species of lxodida and 5 species of Diptera. First records in the study area were obtained for Eyndhovenia euryalis euryalis, Eyndhovenia euryalis oudemansi, Argas vespertilionis and Penicillidia dufouri. Spinturnix plecotina on Rhinolophus ferrumequinum and Rhinolophus euryale and lxodes vespertilionis on Myotis nattereri are reported for the first time in the lberian peninsula; Basilia nattereri is new on Myotis nattereriin Biscay. Associations between parasites and hosts are also reported.

El magmatismo de Atienza (NW de la Cordillera Ibérica): edad, origen y arquitectura del sistema magmático
A sill covering an area of more than 15 km2, several dykes up to 5 m thick and a volcanoclastic deposit crop out with similar petrology in the sector of Atienza (NW Iberian Chain, Spain). They consist of calc-alkaline porphyritic andesites with phenocrysts of plagioclase, amphibole, biotite, garnet and orthopyroxene. Based on U–Pb zircon analysis, an age of 290 ± 3 Ma (Sakmarian-Artinskian in the Cisuralian) has been calculated for this magmatism. The chemistry and geothermobarometry on amphibole crystals revealed crystallisation at different depths between 31 and 16 km, involving several events of magma recharge and fractional crystallisation. Magma ascent led to destabilisation of the amphibole crystals, their replacement by biotite, and the formation of thick microcrystalline coronas. Whole-rock trace element and isotopic compositions support a strong crustal influence in the origin of the magma. Crustal melting was produced by heating generated after lithospheric thinning, delamination, and asthenospheric rise produced after the uplift of the Variscan Orogen and the oroclinal folding of the Iberian Massif
A Metabolically Healthy Profile Is a Transient Stage When Exercise and Diet Are Not Supervised: Long-Term Effects in the EXERDIET-HTA Study
Metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO) is a regular state in people with primary hypertension (HTN), obesity, and who are physically inactive. To achieve and maintain a metabolically healthy overweight/obese (MHO) state should be a main treatment goal. The aims of the study were (1) to determine differences in metabolic profiles of overweight/obese, physically inactive individuals with HTN following a 16-week (POST) supervised aerobic exercise training (SupExT) intervention with an attentional control (AC) group, and (2) to determine whether the changes observed were maintained following six months (6 M) of unsupervised time. Participants (n = 219) were randomly assigned into AC or SupExT groups. All participants underwent a hypocaloric diet. At POST, all participants received diet and physical activity advice for the following 6 M, with no supervision. All measurements were assessed pre-intervention (PRE), POST, and after 6 M. From PRE to POST, MUO participants became MHO with improved (p < 0.05) total cholesterol (TC, ∆ = −12.1 mg/dL), alanine aminotransferase (∆ = −8.3 U/L), glucose (∆ = −5.5 mg/dL), C-reactive protein (∆ = −1.4 mg/dL), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) compared to unhealthy optimal cut-off values. However, after 6 M, TC, glucose, and SBP returned to unhealthy values (p < 0.05). In a non-physically active population with obesity and HTN, a 16-week SupExT and diet intervention significantly improves cardiometabolic profile from MUO to MHO. However, after 6 M of no supervision, participants returned to MUO. The findings of this study highlight the need for regular, systematic, and supervised diet and exercise programs to avoid subsequent declines in cardiometabolic health.P.C., A.M.A.-B., and I.G.-A. were supported by the Basque Government with predoctoral grants. Resonant spin tunneling in randomly oriented nanospheres of Mn 12 acetate
Under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution license (3.0 Unported or 4.0 International).-- et al.We report measurements and theoretical analysis of resonant spin tunneling in randomly oriented nanospheres of a molecular magnet. Amorphous nanospheres of Mn 12 acetate have been fabricated and characterized by chemical, infrared, TEM, x-ray, and magnetic methods. Magnetic measurements have revealed sharp tunneling peaks in the field derivative of the magnetization that occur at the typical resonant field values for the Mn 12 acetate crystal in the field parallel to the easy axis. Theoretical analysis is provided that explains these observations. We argue that resonant spin tunneling in a molecular magnet can be established in a powder sample, without the need for a single crystal and without aligning the easy magnetization axes of the molecules. This is confirmed by reanalyzing the old data on a powdered sample of nonoriented micron-size crystals of Mn 12 acetate. Our findings can greatly simplify the selection of candidates for quantum spin tunneling among newly synthesized molecular magnets. The work at the University of Barcelona has been supported by Spanish Government Project No. MAT2011-23698. Characters of the Stephanian-Permian Bronchales basin and the tourmalinization associated to calc-alkaline rhyolites (Teruel Province)
Tourmalinized rhyolites with 0.87 O/o ofboron as average value show As, Sb, Sn and Bi increments over nontourmalinized ones, as well as important enrichments of HREE over LREE possibly because tourmalinization fluids were enriched in complexing agents (i.e .F)
Setting, Petrology and Geochemistry of the Volcanoclastic Complex of Orea (Guadalajara, Iberian Chain)
[Abstract] The volcanoclastic outcrop ofOrea (south margin of the Iberian Chain) reflects a pluriepisodic igneous activity, expressed in agglomerates and tuffs ofdacitic composition (with a calc-alkaline affinity) and Autunian-Thuringian age. The tuffs are the results' of a hydromagmatic activity, developed under a thin sheet of water (in a paludal environment). The structure of the magmatic outcrop
results of the late-Hercynian extensional tectonics, equivalent to that observed
in many other outcrops ofthe southeast border ofthe Iberian Chain. The setting
characters and composition of the involved magmatic rock-types, suggest the
presence of only one volcanic focus, as in other coetaneous half-grabens of this
sector of the Iberian Chain
Loading and cooling in an optical trap via hyperfine dark states
We present an optical cooling scheme that relies on hyperfine dark states to enhance loading and cooling atoms inside deep optical dipole traps. We demonstrate a sevenfold increase in the number of atoms loaded in the conservative potential with strongly shifted excited states. In addition, we use the energy selective dark state to efficiently cool the atoms trapped inside the conservative potential rapidly and without losses. Our findings open the door to optically assisted cooling of trapped atoms and molecules which lack the closed cycling transitions normally needed to achieve low temperatures and the high initial densities required for evaporative cooling
