A Grounded Theory of White Counselors’ Antiracist Counseling Identity Development

Research related to the professional counselor’s development of an antiracist counseling identity is scarce. The goal of this dissertation study was to explore White mental health counselors’ unique personal and professional experiences that facilitate the development of an antiracist counseling identity and the impact of an antiracist counseling identity on practice. Using Critical Race Theory (Crenshaw et al., 1995; Haskins & Singh, 2015) and multicultural and social justice theory (Ratts, 2011; Ratts et al. 2015; Sue & Sue, 1999), this constructivist grounded theory study sought to answer the following questions: (a) How do White counselors develop an antiracist counseling identity?, and (b) How does an antiracist counseling identity affect counseling practice? 12 White mental health counselors who self-identify as antiracist counselors and who demonstrate antiracism expertise and an ongoing commitment to antiracism work participated in this study. Data were collected via two semistructured interviews and analyzed using constructivist grounded theory procedures. Findings suggest that White mental health counselors’ antiracist counseling identity development is a multifaceted lifelong developmental process that manifests as personal and professional antiracist actions including a proposed model of antiracist counseling practices. Implications for counseling theory and practice, counselor education and supervision, and future research have been provided

Modelling complex livestock-agricultural systems at a regional scale : A case study in La Reunion

Réunion Island, situated in the Indian Ocean, presents a unique case study to model regional bio-economic parameters of the dairy industry. It is a good example of a closed system for movement of animals, available labour, consumption of products, and available land. The present study models the dairy sector at a regional (island) level, in close collaboration with key stakeholders, to study the impact of new agricultural policies in terms of changes to subsidy norms, price fluctuations and environment, with reference to nitrogen excess. The model can be used to generate a number of scenarios, to explore the effects of various industry controls, such as fixing the stocking rate according to EU norms, increasing or reducing the milk subsidy, intensification (such as an increase in milk production to 40 million litres per year) and labour and price constraints (such as an increase or reduction in the milk price or a reduction in labour hours). The model is being consulted by the local dairy cooperative as a discussion support tool at a regional scale to look at implications of expanding the sector and its economic, environmental and social impact. Dense Suspension Splat: Monolayer Spreading and Hole Formation After Impact

We use experiments and minimal numerical models to investigate the rapidly expanding monolayer formed by the impact of a dense suspension drop against a smooth solid surface. The expansion creates a lace-like pattern of particle clusters separated by particle-free regions. Both the expansion and the development of the spatial inhomogeneity are dominated by particle inertia, therefore robust and insensitive to details of the surface wetting, capillarity and viscous drag.Comment: 4 pages (5 with references), and a total of 4 figure
