Princip montaza v pesennoj lirike Janki Djagilevoj

Yanka Dyagileva, rock poet of the late 80s from Novosibirsk, died in 1991 at the age of 24. She left behind a relatively small oeuvre consisting of only 29 songs. Up to the present day, her lyrics have been subject to little research. One of the reasons for that may lie in the unusual complexity of most of her song texts which is closely connected to her technique of composition. The article at hand is concerned with the particular structure underlying the majority of Yanka’s texts. Her lyrics consist of a considerable number of short, heterogeneous fragments which often appear to have been linked at random. This technique, generally known as montage, has frequently been used in the works of Russian and Western avant-garde poets. The fragments assembled in Yanka’s lyrics are analysed with respect to their origins and syntactic structure. Finally, it is shown that the method of montage results in the transformation of the traditional lyrical I in Dyagileva’s texts. The present article is based on a chapter of a master thesis written in German that will be submitted this year

Otkaz ot klassičeskogo tropa v pesennoj lirike Janki Djagilevoj

One of the basic features that distinguish a classic poetic from a non-poetic text is the cumulative use of tropes: metaphors, similes, allegories. Like other poets, Yanka Dyagileva makes extensive use of tropes in her song poetry. As regards their specific structure, however, Yanka's tropes often deviate substantially from the traditional trope. Instead, many of Dyagileva's tropes bear great resemblance to the so-called absurd tropes that have been introduced to Russian literature by the poets of the Russian avant-garde

"Tol'ko skazočka chuëvaja..." Poterja detstva kak central'nyj motiv v tekstach Janki Djagilevoj

(1990). What stands out in Yanka’s oeuvre is the hopelessness and desperation that are expressed in every single line of the 29 songs she composed over the course of her short life. The present article argues that the motif of the loss of childhood, which plays a central role in Yanka’s lyrics, contributes considerably to the tragic nature of the worlds she evokes in her songs. The analysis focuses mainly, though not exclusively, on Dyagileva’s songs Гори, гори ясно (1988), Продано (1989) and Выше ноги от земли (1990)

Who cares? Market socialism and social reproduction

This paper provides a feminist critique of market socialism. I argue that two important socialist values, equality and freedom, can only be realised by a form of socialism that adequately distributes and values tasks associated with social reproduction. My argument proceeds in five steps: first, I outline of the main characteristics of market socialism. Second, I provide an understanding of social reproduction and show that its current organisation raises a feminist concern. Third, I discuss the relation between markets under market socialism and social reproduction and draw implications from this for the market socialist project. Finally, I show that market socialism has the potential to bring about a more equal distribution of responsibility for social reproductive work.Peer Reviewe

Procalcitonin and pneumonia: Is it a useful marker?

An ideal biomarker for pneumonia should allow an early diagnosis and differential diagnosis from noninfectious conditions and should inform about the course and prognosis of the disease. Procalcitonin (PCT) covers these features better as compared to more commonly used biomarkers like C-reactive protein or leukocyte count. PCT complements and improves the assessment of pneumonia based on careful patient history, dedicated physical examination, and appropriate cultures. Importantly, a PCT-based therapeutic strategy can safely and markedly reduce antibiotic courses in community-acquired pneumonia. However, as is the cast with all diagnostic surrogate markers, PCT can be increased in noninfectious conditions and may remain low in bacterial infections, especially localized infections. This stresses the importance of follow-up measurements, because PCT levels in these patients often show a gradual increase during follow-up. Although PCT is better than more common biomarkers for the prognosis of pneumonia and to predict survival and outcome, novel biomarkers show an even better prognostic accurac

3D correlative single-cell imaging utilizing fluorescence and refractive index tomography

Cells alter the path of light, a fact that leads to well-known aberrations in single cell or tissue imaging. Optical diffraction tomography (ODT) measures the biophysical property that causes these aberrations, the refractive index (RI). ODT is complementary to fluorescence imaging and does not require any markers. The present study introduces RI and fluorescence tomography with optofluidic rotation (RAFTOR) of suspended cells, quantifying the intracellular RI distribution and colocalizing it with fluorescence in 3D. The technique is validated with cell phantoms and used to confirm a lower nuclear RI for HL60 cells. Furthermore, the nuclear inversion of adult mouse photoreceptor cells is observed in the RI distribution. The applications shown confirm predictions of previous studies and illustrate the potential of RAFTOR to improve our understanding of cells and tissues.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure

Parameter estimation for contact tracing in graph-based models

We adopt a maximum-likelihood framework to estimate parameters of a stochastic susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model with contact tracing on a rooted random tree. Given the number of detectees per index case, our estimator allows to determine the degree distribution of the random tree as well as the tracing probability. Since we do not discover all infectees via contact tracing, this estimation is non-trivial. To keep things simple and stable, we develop an approximation suited for realistic situations (contract tracing probability small, or the probability for the detection of index cases small). In this approximation, the only epidemiological parameter entering the estimator is R0R_0. The estimator is tested in a simulation study and is furthermore applied to covid-19 contact tracing data from India. The simulation study underlines the efficiency of the method. For the empirical covid-19 data, we compare different degree distributions and perform a sensitivity analysis. We find that particularly a power-law and a negative binomial degree distribution fit the data well and that the tracing probability is rather large. The sensitivity analysis shows no strong dependency of the estimates on the reproduction number. Finally, we discuss the relevance of our findings.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, 3 table

Aux Ouvrières!: socialist feminism in the Paris Commune

    Get PDF
Feminist and socialist movements both aim at emancipation yet have often been at odds. The socialist feminists of the Paris Commune provide one of the few examples in late nineteenth-century Europe of a political movement combining the two. This article offers a new interpretation of the Commune feminists, focusing on the working-class women’s organisation the Union des femmes. We highlight how the Commune feminists articulated the specific form of oppression experienced by working-class women as both women and workers, which consequently required a joint, yet differentiated, struggle to overcome. We explore three aspects of this framework. First, the Commune feminists offered a vision of the transformation of the social through reforms to girls’ education, the family and women’s work. Second, they practised a politics of coalition building by connecting their struggle with those of other oppressed groups, such as male workers, peasants and workers of other nations. Third, these ideas were instantiated in the Union des femmes’ novel proposal for women’s worker co-operatives as part of a socialist re-organisation of the economy
