The different degrees on Tourism seek to train experts capable of managing changes and stimulating the necessary improvements to be able to maintain and enhance the dynamic tourism sector. This paper provides the design of a teaching activity for students of tourism degree. With it, it is intended that students, through collaborative work methodology and through the use of geospatial technologies, especially the GIS Story Map, acquire essential competencies in their training and are capable of creating a tourist product according to the characteristics of the destination. The didactic experience consists of creating an original and innovative tourist route in Madrid. This way, a collaborative map and a series of individually presented routes are obtained that are co-evaluated by the students themselves. The results of a satisfaction survey about the activity answered by the participants are also presented. It appears that the activity has been considered positive, since the students claim to have acquired skills of great interest in their training as future professionals, while feeling motivated. We conclude by pointing out that it is necessary to include this type of initiative in university education and that this methodology can be extrapolated to other subjects and places. This research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) Transformations of the historic urban landscape induced by tourism: contradictions and controversies, government and local governance (CSO2016-75470-R)

Social Vulnerability and Touristification of Historic Centers

Historic centers have su ered di erent processes of neglect, occupation, segregation, gentrification, and touristification as a result of changes in demand and policies. Currently, they are going through a homogenization process motivated by tourist pressure, which is causing the expulsion of the local population; this is a common topic of interest for media and political agendas, which requires scientific analysis. This research aims at identifying the winning and the losing tourist groups in the historic center of Seville. It is structured in two parts: a conceptual one based on the bibliographic review with which one wants to know how the current society responds to tourist pressure through defining and characterizing the processes of substitution of uses and inhabitants, and another empirical one in which the analysis of statistical indicators (demographic, economic, and residential) treated with Geographic Information System (GIS) allows us to measure the degree of existing vulnerability and analyze social and spatial e ects caused by the tourism in Sevill

Tourist guides and free tours: A controversial relationship

    Get PDF
Like other tourism subsectors, guided tours have been affected by the emergence of the sharing economy. Although this subsector of tourism is not as well known, it constitutes an interesting scenario for studying these new business models and it is also generating debate. This article analyses the uniqueness of the tourist guide services provided through online platforms under the name of free tours. The study includes a bibliographical revision and it is carried out from a qualitative methodology based on a survey conducted among tourist guide professionals and in-depth interviews. The study analyses the point of view of professionals in the guiding sector from 11 European cities subject to common regulations. It aims to determine how they are affected by the free tours as well as to assess their relationship with this new activity, a complex relationship with many controversial elements in terms of labour, tax and organisation. It will be shown that the free tours respond to the trends of contemporary society but are not an expression of the collaborative consumption among equals, but rather an effective marketing strategy.‘Transformations of the historical urban landscape induced by tourism: contradictions and controversies, government and local governance’ (CSO2016-75470-R), which forms part of the National Programme for Research, Development and Innovation aimed at the Challenges of Society. The objective of this study is to explore the possibility of applying a point system as a guide to the management of waiting lists in National Health Systems. Following recent contributions in the axiomatic theory of justice, the ethical properties of a point system are illustrated. In addition, we present the results of an experiment whose objective was to develop a point system for cataract extraction, based on social preferences. The results of the experiment have shown that the analytic methods used here, of focus groups, interview-administered questionnaires, conjoint analysis, and rank-ordered logit, can be usefully combined to determine the total priority score for each patient.Point System; Priority Criteria; Waiting Lists; Cataract.

The scientific production, which focused on the study of the main territorial and socioeconomic issues of the Spanish High-speed rail network, is analyzed in depth. This research aims to understand its evolution and designated topics. The results, classified by disciplines, support the hypothesis that in Spain the relationship between High-speed rail and tourism has yet to be thoroughly studied, despite its scientific and political interest. For this reason, future research must tackle a variety of questions which must be addressed through a collaboration of experts from different areas that contribute to different perspectives and methodologies

The relationship between average annual and quarter-on-quarter GDP growth rates: implications for projections and macroeconomic analysis

    Get PDF
Artículo de revistaThe average annual growth rate of GDP can be formulated algebraically as a weighted average of the quarter-on-quarter growth rates of the preceding and the current year. Sometimes this can give rise to counterintuitive results and misinterpretations of how the economy is evolving. For example, a given sequence of GDP growth rates, in quarter-on-quarter terms, in the current year, may give rise to very different average annual rates depending on the trajectory of GDP in the preceding year. Also, with given quarter-on-quarter growth figures for the four quarters of a particular year, average GDP growth will be higher, the earlier in the year that the largest quarteron-quarter increases occur. In the context of macroeconomic projections, analysis tends to focus on average annual GDP growth rates, insofar as they offer a summarised version of the outlook. However, it should be noted that revisions to the current year’s projections with a particular sign (for example, upwards) may reflect changes of two types: first, the publication of new, more favourable National Accounts data for past quarters; and second, a downward revision to growth prospects for the remaining quarters of the year. Therefore, it would be a mistake to conclude from the mere observation of an upward revision to average annual growth that the economic outlook has improved
