    The stellar host in star-forming low-mass galaxies: Evidence for two classes

    The morphological evolution of star-forming galaxies provides important clues to understand their physical properties, as well as the triggering and quenching mechanisms of star formation. We aim at connecting morphology and star-formation properties of low-mass galaxies (median stellar mass \sim 108.5^{8.5} M_{\odot}) at low redshift (z<0.36z<0.36). We use a sample of medium-band selected star-forming galaxies from the GOODS-North field. Hα\alpha images for the sample are created combining both spectral energy distribution fits and HST data. Using them, we mask the star forming regions to obtain an unbiased two-dimensional model of the light distribution of the host galaxies. For this purpose we use PHI\texttt{PHI}, a new Bayesian photometric decomposition code. We apply it independently to 7 HST bands assuming a S\'ersic surface brightness model. Star-forming galaxy hosts show low S\'ersic index (with median nn \sim 0.9), as well as small sizes (median ReR_e \sim 1.6 kpc), and negligible change of the parameters with wavelength (except for the axis ratio, which grows with wavelength). Using a clustering algorithm, we find two different classes of star-forming galaxies: A more compact, redder, and high-nn (class A) and a more extended, bluer and lower-nn one (class B). We also find evidence that the first class is more spheroidal-like. In addition, we find that 48% of the analyzed galaxies present negative color gradients (only 5% are positive). The host component of low-mass star-forming galaxies at z<0.36z<0.36 separates into two different classes, similar to what has been found for their higher mass counterparts. The results are consistent with an evolution from class B to class A. Several mechanisms from the literature, like minor and major mergers, and violent disk instability, can explain the physical process behind the likely transition between the classes.     Experimental determination of the absorption strength in absorbing chaotic cavities

    Due to the experimental necessity we present a formula to determine the absorption strength by power losses inside a chaotic system (cavities, graphs, acoustic resonators, etc) when the antenna coupling, always present in experimental measurements, is taken into account.     Electroweak corrections to decays involving a charged Higgs boson

    We present complete one-loop radiative corrections to the decay rate of a top quark into a charged Higgs boson and a bottom quark, and for the decay of a charged Higgs boson into leptons. The results are discussed in the framework of the two Higgs boson extension of the Standard Model suggested by supersymmetry.     A control problem arising in the process of waste water purification

    AbstractIn this paper we state and solve an optimal control problem arisen from the management of the sewage disposal which is dumped into the sea through submarine outfalls. Firstly, we fix oxygen and amount of organic matter as water quality indicators and we state a partial differential equations model to simulate them in a domain occupied by shallow waters. Constraints about water quality and economic objectives lead us to a pointwise optimal control problem with state and control constraints. (The theoretical analysis of the problem has been developed by the authors in (Martinez et al., C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Serie I 328 (1999) 35.) (Martinez et al., Preprint, Dept. Matematica Aplicada, Univ. Santiago de Compostela, Spain, 1998.)). We deal with the problem by using time and space discretizations and we propose two algorithms for the numerical resolution of the discretized problem.     Indexación: Web of Science; Scopus.The anuran Rhinella spinulosa is distributed along the Andes Range at altitudes that undergo wide daily and seasonal variation in temperature. One of the populations inhabits geothermal streams, a stable environment that influences life history traits such as the timing of metamorphosis. To investigate whether this population has undergone local adaptation to this unique habitat, we carried out transcriptome analyses in animals from two localities in two developmental stages (prometamorphic and metamorphic) and exposed them to two temperatures (20 and 25 degrees C). RNA-Seq, de novo assembly and annotation defined a transcriptome revealing 194,469 high quality SNPs, with 1,507 genes under positive selection. Comparisons among the experimental conditions yielded 1,593 differentially expressed genes. A bioinformatics search for candidates revealed a total of 70 genes that are highly likely to be implicated in the adaptive response of the population living in a stable environment, compared to those living in an environment with variable temperatures. Most importantly, the population inhabiting the geothermal environment showed decreased transcriptional plasticity and reduced genetic variation compared to its counterpart from the non-stable environment.     3x2 Achievement Goals, Friendship and Affectivity in Physical Education: Age-Gender Differences

    Se persiguen tres objetivos: (a) analizar las diferencias relativas a la edad y sexo en las metas de logro 3x2, metas de amistad, y afectividad en Educación Física, (b) estudiar las relaciones entre esas variables, y (c) explorar el valor predictivo de las metas de logro 3x2 y amistad sobre la afectividad. La muestra estuvo formada por 1610 alumnos (855 varones y 755 mujeres) de 10 a 17 años. Se realizaron MANOVAS, análisis univariados (Scheffé), y regresiones lineales. Los resultados mostraron un descenso significativo de las metas de logro (excepto aproximación-otro), metas de amistad y afecto positivo debido al desarrollo. Los varones puntuaron más alto las metas de aproximación-tarea, aproximación-otro, y evitación-otro. Las metas de aproximación-tarea y aproximación-amistad fueron los principales predictores positivos del afecto positivo.     Hybrid quantization of an inflationary universe

    We quantize to completion an inflationary universe with small inhomogeneities in the framework of loop quantum cosmology. The homogeneous setting consists of a massive scalar field propagating in a closed, homogeneous scenario. We provide a complete quantum description of the system employing loop quantization techniques. After introducing small inhomogeneities as scalar perturbations, we identify the true physical degrees of freedom by means of a partial gauge fixing, removing all the local degrees of freedom except the matter perturbations. We finally combine a Fock description for the inhomogeneities with the polymeric quantization of the homogeneous background, providing the quantum Hamiltonian constraint of the composed system. Its solutions are then completely characterized, owing to the suitable choice of quantum constraint, and the physical Hilbert space is constructed. Finally, we consider the analog description for an alternate gauge and, moreover, in terms of gauge-invariant quantities.     On The Low Frequency Quasi Periodic Oscillations of X-ray Sources

    Based on the interpretation of the twin kilohertz Quasi Periodic Oscillations (kHz QPOs) of X-ray spectra of Low Mass X-Ray Binaries (LMXBs) to the Keplerian and the periastron precession frequencies at the magnetosphere-disk of X-ray neutron star (NS) respectively, we ascribe the low frequency Quasi Periodic Oscillations (LFQPO) and HBO (15-60 Hz QPO for Z sources or Atoll sources) to the periastron precession at some outer disk radius. The obtained conclusions include: all QPO frequencies increase with increasing the accretion rate. The obtained theoretical relations between HBO (LFQPO) frequency and the kHz QPO frequency are similar to the measured empirical formula.
