    Seed germination and growth of Calophyllum brasiliense (Clusiaceae), a typical species of flooded forests

    Soil waterlogging and the subsequent reduction in the amount of oxygen available for the respiration of the root system selected, along the evolutive process, plants able to thrive in seasonally or permanently flooded areas. In neotropical plants there are many types of adaptations to flooding. In this paper we present the results of the work carried out with seeds and seedlings of C brasiliense subjected to hypoxia during germination and early development. C brasiliense seeds are not photoblastic and survive up to three months burried in a water saturated substrate, but germination only takes place in well-drained soils. Soil waterlogging does not inhibit seedling growth and there are no apparent morphological changes of the aerial part of flooded plants. New and aerated roots that make plant survival possible replace old and spoiled roots. In contrast to many typical species of flood-prone areas where growth is inhibited by oxygen stress. C. brasiliense seedlings seem to be well adapted to their waterlogged environment. Seed dispersion, the absence of photoblastic response as well as seed and seedling capacity of surviving and growing in waterlogged soils contribute to the wide geographic distribution of C. brasiliense always associated with areas subjected to soil waterlogging.A saturação hídrica do solo e a conseqüente diminuição na quantidade de oxigênio disponível para o sistema radicular selecionaram, ao longo do processo evolutivo, plantas capazes de sobreviverem à inundação sazonal ou permanente. Nas espécies neotropicais as adaptações que permitem suportar este estresse são bastante diversificadas. Neste trabalho foram estudados a germinação das sementes e o crescimento inicial das plantas de Calophyllum brasiliense, em condições de hipoxia. As sementes de C brasiliense não são fotoblásticas, sobrevivem ao menos três meses submersas, mas germinam apenas em solo bem drenado. A inundação não inibe o crescimento da planta. Não houve mudanças morfológicas na parte aérea das plantas, mas a substituição das raízes formadas no período pré-inundação por um sistema radicular eficiente talvez seja o principal motivo que permita o crescimento normal das plantas em áreas inundadas. Ao contrário de algumas espécies de locais sujeitos ao alagamento, cujas plantas têm o crescimento inibido pelo estresse, o ciclo de vida de C brasiliense está adaptado à inundação temporária ou permanente.     Transboundary cooperation and Mechanisms for Maritime Spatial Planning implementation. SIMNORAT Project

    El proyecto SIMNORAT, Supporting Implementation of Maritime Spatial Planning in the Northern European Atlantic region (SIMNORAT), fue un proyecto cofundado por la UE de ordenación del espacio marítimo desarrollado en la región atlántica. Los objetivos del proyecto eran apoyar a los Estados miembros (EM) para aplicar la Directiva 2014/89/UE del Parlamento Europeo y del Consejo, de 23 de julio de 2014, por la que se establece un marco para la ordenación del espacio marítimo (OEM); y poner en marcha y llevar a cabo iniciativas concretas y transfronterizas de OEM entre los EM participantes en el proyecto (España, Francia y Portugal). Para desarrollar y probar aspectos de la ordenación del espacio marítimo con el fin de elaborar directrices y recomendaciones útiles en un contexto transfronterizo, las autoridades competentes de los países también participaron en el proyecto. Los resultados de SIMNORAT, como el desarrollo de una metodología conceptual para la ordenación del espacio marítimo transfronterizo, el análisis de las herramientas y los datos aplicados en el proceso de ordenación del espacio marítimo, la evaluación de las demandas y tendencias espaciales de los sectores marítimos, y la participación de las partes interesadas, ayudaron a identificar las mejores prácticas en los aspectos científicos, técnicos y sociales de la ordenación del espacio marítimo para una cooperación eficaz, especialmente en las áreas de estudio de casos transfronterizos, para mejorar la aplicación de la Directiva sobre ordenación del espacio marítimo en cada país con esfuerzos de colaboración y una visión común. Esto, a su vez, puede apoyar la creación del marco adecuado para desarrollar una economía azul sostenible en la región, gestionando el sistema socioecológico asociado en un entorno cambiante

    Essential oils from leaves of cryptocarya spp from the atlantic rain forest

    The essential oils from leaves of four Cryptocarya spp endemic in the Brazilian Atlantic rain forest were obtained by hydrodistillation and shown by GC-MS analysis to contain mono and sesquiterpenes. The major components of the oil of Cryptocarya moschata were linalool (34.3%), a-terpinene (17.0%), g-terpinene (10.4%), 1,8-cineole (5.8%) and trans-ocimene (4.8%), whilst those of C. botelhensis were a-pinene (22.7%), b-pinene (9.2%), trans-verbenol (8.4%), trans-pinocarveol (5.5%) and myrtenal (5.4%). The principal compounds of C. mandioccana oil were b-caryophyllene (13.8%), spathulenol (10.2%), caryophyllene oxide (7.8%), d-cadinene (6.9%) and bicyclogermacrene (6.4%), whilst those of C. saligna were germacrene D (15.5%), bicyclogermacrene (13.8%), spathulenol (11.8%) and germacrene B (5.7%)

    Association of genetic variants in the promoter region of genes encoding p22phox (CYBA) and glutamate cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (GCLC) and renal disease in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Oxidative stress is recognized as a major pathogenic factor of cellular damage caused by hyperglycemia. NOX/NADPH oxidases generate reactive oxygen species and NOX1, NOX2 and NOX4 isoforms are expressed in kidney and require association with subunit p22phox (encoded by the <it>CYBA </it>gene). Increased expression of p22phox was described in animal models of diabetic nephropathy. In the opposite direction, glutathione is one of the main endogenous antioxidants whose plasmatic concentrations were reported to be reduced in diabetes patients. The aim of the present investigation was to test whether functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes involved in the generation of NADPH-dependent O<sub>2</sub><sup>•- </sup>(-675 T → A in <it>CYBA</it>, unregistered) and in glutathione metabolism (-129 C → T in <it>GCLC </it>[rs17883901] and -65 T → C in <it>GPX3 </it>[rs8177412]) confer susceptibility to renal disease in type 1 diabetes patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>401 patients were sorted into two groups according to the presence (n = 104) or absence (n = 196) of overt diabetic nephropathy or according to glomerular filtration rate (GFR) estimated by Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equation: ≥ 60 mL (n = 265) or < 60 mL/min/1.73 m<sup>2 </sup>(n = 136) and were genotyped.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>No differences were found in the frequency of genotypes between diabetic and non-diabetic subjects. The frequency of GFR < 60 mL/min was significantly lower in the group of patients carrying <it>CYBA </it>genotypes T/A+A/A (18.7%) than in the group carrying the T/T genotype (35.3%) (P = 0.0143) and the frequency of GFR < 60 mL/min was significantly higher in the group of patients carrying <it>GCLC </it>genotypes C/T+T/T (47.1%) than in the group carrying the C/C genotype (31.1%) (<it>p </it>= 0.0082). Logistic regression analysis identified the presence of at least one A allele of the <it>CYBA </it>SNP as an independent protection factor against decreased GFR (OR = 0.38, CI95% 0.14-0.88, <it>p </it>= 0.0354) and the presence of at least one T allele of the <it>GCLC </it>rs17883901 SNP as an independent risk factor for decreased GFR (OR = 2.40, CI95% 1.27-4.56, <it>p </it>= 0.0068).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The functional SNPs <it>CYBA </it>-675 T → A and <it>GCLC </it>rs17883901, probably associated with cellular redox imbalances, modulate the risk for renal disease in the studied population of type 1 diabetes patients and require validation in additional cohorts.</p
