    Parallel multi-level genetic ensemble for numerical weather prediction enhancement

    The need for reliable predictions in environmental modelling is well-known. Particularly, the predicted weather and meteorological information about the future atmospheric state is crucial and necessary for almost all other areas of environmental modelling. Additionally, right decisions to prevent damages and save lives could be taken depending on a reliable meteorological prediction process. Lack and uncertainty of input data and parameters constitute the main source of errors for most of these models. In recent years, evolutionary optimization methods have become popular to solve the input parameter problem of environmental models. We propose a new parallel meteorological prediction scheme that uses evolutionary optimization methods based on Multi-Chromosome Genetic Algorithm to enhance the quality of weather forecasts by focusing on the calibration of input parameters. This new scheme is parallelized and executed on a HPC environment in order to reduce the time needed to obtain the final prediction. The new approach is called Multi-Level Genetic Ensemble (M-Level G-Ensemble) and it has been tested using historical data of a well-known weather catastrophe: Hurricane Katrina that occurred in 2005 in the Gulf of Mexico. Results obtained with our approach provide both significant improvements in weather prediction and a significant reduction in the execution time. © 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd

    Acupuncture treatment for idiopathic Horner's syndrome in a dog

    A one-year-old female English Cocker Spaniel dog with idiopathic Horner's Syndrome is described. The specific clinical signs in this specimen were miosis, ptosis, enophthalmos, and prolapsed nictitans for 2 days following sudden onset. According to history taking, ophthalmic, neurological, and radiological examination, the patient was diagnosed with idiopathic Horner's syndrome. Manual acupuncture treatment was applied to the dog on local points two times in 2 days. The local acupoints were ST-4 (Di Chang) and GB-1 (Tong Zi Liao). The day after the initial acupuncture treatment, clinical signs related to idiopathic Horner's syndrome had almost disappeared. The day after the second treatment, specific clinical signs were completely absent. During this period, the dog did not receive any orthodox treatment. Thus, it is suggested that manual acupuncture might be an effective therapy for idiopathic Horner's syndrome

    Functional aspects of root architecture and mycorrhizal inoculation with respect to nutrient uptake capacity

The experimental design was a factorialarrangement of presence/absence of mycorrhizal fungusinoculation (Glomus intraradices) and high/low nutrientstatus. Percent AM colonisation, nitrate and ammoniumuptake capacity, and nitrogen and phosphorus contentswere determined in 3-month-old seedlings. Grayscale andcolour images were used to study root morphology andtopology, and to assess the relation between rootpigmentation and physiological activities. AM colonisationlead to a higher allocation of biomass to white andyellow parts of the root. Inorganic nitrogen uptakecapacity per unit root length and nitrogen content weregreatest in AM colonised plants grown under low nutrientconditions. A better match was found between plantnitrogen content and biomass accumulation, than betweenplant phosphorus content and biomass accumulation. It issuggested that the increase in nutrient uptake capacity ofAM colonised roots is dependent both on changes in rootmorphology and physiological uptake potential. Thisstudy contributes to an understanding of the role of AMfungi and root morphology in plant nutrient uptake andshows that AM colonisation improves the nitrogennutrition of plants, mainly when growing at low levelsof nutrients

    Static single-arm force generation with kinematic constraints

    Abstract This study investigates natural single-arm interac-tion with kinematic constraints. Smooth, frictionless, kinematic constraints reduce the degrees-of-freedom of motion at the hand, but add force freedoms. These force freedoms allow the hand to push and pull against the constraints with no effect on the task. Understanding how subjects take advantage of kinematic constraints will be useful in designing constraint surfaces for assisted manipulation. This paper reports the results of an experiment studying how subjects make use of the presence of a kinematic constraint in a static planar single-arm task. Subjects are asked to hold a handle that is free to slide on a linear rail, and to apply a force tangent to the rail to resist a pulling force. Thus the goal of the task is to hold the handle stationary. Subjects are also free to apply any force normal to the rail, as these forces have no effect on the task. This freedom does not exist without a kinematic constraint. We nd that subjects make use of the force freedom by applying signicant forces against the constraint in a consistent and constraint-conguration-dependent fashion. We show that the constraint forces can be predicted by a convex, scale-invariant objective function on the hand force space. The level curves of this objective function can be found directly from the experimental data without any biomechanical modeling. I

    Maternal Diet Intervention Before Pregnancy Primes Offspring Lipid Metabolism in Liver

    Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has a developmental origin and is influenced in utero. We aimed to evaluate if maternal diet intervention before pregnancy would be beneficial to reduce the risk of offspring NAFLD. In our study, female mice were either on a normal-fat diet (NF group), or a high-fat diet for 12 weeks and continued on this diet throughout pregnancy and lactation (HF group), or switched from HF-to-NF diet 1 week (H1N group), or 9 weeks (H9N group) before pregnancy. Compared with the NF offspring, the H1N and HF, but not the H9N offspring, displayed more severe hepatic steatosis and glucose intolerance. More specifically, an abnormal blood lipid panel was seen in the H1N offspring and abnormal hepatic free fatty acid composition was present in both the HF and H1N offspring, while the H9N offspring displayed both at normal levels. These physiological changes were associated with desensitized hepatic insulin/AKT signaling, increased expression of genes and proteins for de novo lipogenesis and cholesterol synthesis, decreased expression of genes and proteins for fatty acid oxidation, increased Pcsk9 expression, and hypoactivation of 5' AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling in the HF and H1N offspring. However, these effects were completely or partially rescued in the H9N offspring. In summary, we found that early maternal diet intervention is effective in reducing the risk of offspring NAFLD caused by maternal HF diet. These findings provide significant support to develop effective diet intervention strategies and policies for prevention of obesity and NAFLD to promote optimal health outcomes for mothers and children

    Measurement of the Positive Muon Lifetime and Determination of the Fermi Constant to Part-per-Million Precision

    We report a measurement of the positive muon lifetime to a precision of 1.0 parts per million (ppm); it is the most precise particle lifetime ever measured. The experiment used a time-structured, low-energy muon beam and a segmented plastic scintillator array to record more than 2 x 10^{12} decays. Two different stopping target configurations were employed in independent data-taking periods. The combined results give tau_{mu^+}(MuLan) = 2196980.3(2.2) ps, more than 15 times as precise as any previous experiment. The muon lifetime gives the most precise value for the Fermi constant: G_F(MuLan) = 1.1663788 (7) x 10^-5 GeV^-2 (0.6 ppm). It is also used to extract the mu^-p singlet capture rate, which determines the proton's weak induced pseudoscalar coupling g_P.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let

    A new spectrometer using multiple gratings with a two-dimensional charge-coupled diode array detector

    A new spectrometer with no moving parts uses a two-dimensional Si-based charge-coupled diode (CCD) array detector and an integrated grating consisting of three subgratings. The effective spectral range imaged on the detector is magnified threefold. The digitized spectral image in the 200–1000 nm wavelength range can be measured quickly. The nonlinear relationship between CCD pixel position and wavelength is corrected with multiple polynomial functions in the calibration procedure, which fits the data using a mathematical pattern-analysis method. The instrument can be applied for rapid spectroscopicdata analyses in many types of photoelectronic experiments and routine testing
