    Evaluation of Toxicity of a Carbamate and an Organophosphate Insecticide to Adult and Larval Western Corn Rootworm, Diabrotica Virgifera Leconte

    The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera LeCcnte, has caused great economic loss to the com producers of the Midwest. That economic loss is twofold: first, the loss of revenue due to insect damage and second, the cost of control measures. It has been estimated that in South Dakota in 1972, approximately $9,000,000 were lost to the insect. The rootworm complex in South Dakota is composed of the western and northern, D. longicomis, corn rootworms. In later years the western has become the primary pest in the complex. The resistance to chemicals by corn rootworms has compounded the problem of holding in check one of the major pests of com in South Dakota. Cultural controls, especially crop rotation, were first recommended for control of the insect. Ball and Weekman stated that in the early l950\u27s, aldrin, chlordane, and heptachlor were recommended for control of the insect larva. By 1959 ineffective control of the rootworm larvae was noted where there were corn-on-corn growing practices, irrigation, and continual use of the chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides. The western com rootworm had become resistant to these chemicals. With the development of the resistance to the chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides new chemicals were sought; diazinon, an organophosphate insecticide, was one of these. However, Ball in Nebraska soon reported that rootworms were becoming resistant to diazinon. From 1963 to 1967 an increase of 66.1% in dosage was needed to obtain the same control. Since the western corn rootworm had become resistant to chemical insecticides and more entomologists were monitoring resistance, the Entomological Society of America in 1970 published a tentative method for detection of insecticide resistance. In 1972, the same organization published a second paper setting standard methods for detection of resistance in Diabrotica and Hypera beetles. In both publications it was noted that limited data was available concerning the possibility of resistance occurring in both the larvae and the adults. It is the purpose of this research to determine if any differences do occur in LD50 values for a carbamate and an organophosphate insecticide on adults and larvae of the western corn rootworm, and to investigate the possibility of the western corn rootworm becoming resistant to these same chemicals

    Prediction of forces and moments for hypersonic flight vehicle control effectors

    This research project includes three distinct phases. For completeness, all three phases of the work are briefly described in this report. The goal was to develop methods of predicting flight control forces and moments for hypersonic vehicles which could be used in a preliminary design environment. The first phase included a preliminary assessment of subsonic/supersonic panel methods and hypersonic local flow inclination methods for such predictions. While these findings clearly indicated the usefulness of such methods for conceptual design activities, deficiencies exist in some areas. Thus, a second phase of research was conducted in which a better understanding was sought for the reasons behind the successes and failures of the methods considered, particularly for the cases at hypersonic Mach numbers. This second phase involved using computational fluid dynamics methods to examine the flow fields in detail. Through these detailed predictions, the deficiencies in the simple surface inclination methods were determined. In the third phase of this work, an improvement to the surface inclination methods was developed. This used a novel method for including viscous effects by modifying the geometry to include the viscous/shock layer

    Improved determination of marine sedimentation rates using 230Thxs

    Measurements of excess 230Th (230Thxs) have proved to be a useful tool in constraining changes in sedimentation rate, and improving our understanding of the fluxes of other components into marine sediments. To obtain the initial activity of 230Thxs (230Thxs0) in sediment: the total measured 230Th must be corrected for the presence of 230Th associated with detrital minerals, for ingrowth from uranium-bearing authigenic phases and then also corrected for the decay of 230Thxs since deposition. We describe a number of improvements in the way these corrections are applied to obtain more accurate determinations of 230Thxs0. We present a new method for the determination of a local estimate for the detrital 238U/232Th activity ratio; suggest more appropriate values for the isotopic composition of authigenic uranium; and question the assumption of secular equilibrium in detrital material. We also present a new, freely-available MATLAB® script called ‘XSage’ that can calculate 230Thxs0, from user-supplied datasets of uranium and thorium isotope activities from sedimentary samples following the theoretical approach described. ‘XSage’ can determine variations in sedimentation rate between stratigraphic horizons of known age and thus produce high-resolution age models. Using a Monte Carlo approach, the program calculates uncertainties for these age models and on the durations of intervals between tie-points. An example of the application of the XSage program using a previously published record is provided

    State based model of long-term potentiation and synaptic tagging and capture

    Recent data indicate that plasticity protocols have not only synapse-specific but also more widespread effects. In particular, in synaptic tagging and capture (STC), tagged synapses can capture plasticity-related proteins, synthesized in response to strong stimulation of other synapses. This leads to long-lasting modification of only weakly stimulated synapses. Here we present a biophysical model of synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus that incorporates several key results from experiments on STC. The model specifies a set of physical states in which a synapse can exist, together with transition rates that are affected by high- and low-frequency stimulation protocols. In contrast to most standard plasticity models, the model exhibits both early- and late-phase LTP/D, de-potentiation, and STC. As such, it provides a useful starting point for further theoretical work on the role of STC in learning and memory

    Estimating Surface Area in Early Hominins

    Height and weight-based methods of estimating surface area have played an important role in the development of the current consensus regarding the role of thermoregulation in human evolution. However, such methods may not be reliable when applied to early hominins because their limb proportions differ markedly from those of humans. Here, we report a study in which this possibility was evaluated by comparing surface area estimates generated with the best-known height and weight-based method to estimates generated with a method that is sensitive to proportional differences. We found that the two methods yield indistinguishable estimates when applied to taxa whose limb proportions are similar to those of humans, but significantly different results when applied to taxa whose proportions differ from those of humans. We also found that the discrepancy between the estimates generated by the two methods is almost entirely attributable to inter-taxa differences in limb proportions. One corollary of these findings is that we need to reassess hypotheses about the role of thermoregulation in human evolution that have been developed with the aid of height and weight-based methods of estimating body surface area. Another is that we need to use other methods in future work on fossil hominin body surface areas

    Heliogyro Solar Sail Research at NASA

    The recent successful flight of the JAXA IKAROS solar sail has renewed interest within NASA in spinning solar sail concepts for high-performance solar sailing. The heliogyro solar sail, in particular, is being re-examined as a potential game-changing architecture for future solar sailing missions. In this paper, we present an overview of ongoing heliogyro technology development and feasibility assessment activities within NASA. In particular, a small-scale heliogyro solar sail technology demonstration concept will be described. We will also discuss ongoing analytical and experimental heliogyro structural dynamics and controls investigations and provide an outline of future heliogyro development work directed toward enabling a low cost heliogyro technology demonstration mission ca. 2020

    Coccidioidomycosis among Workers at an Archeological Site, Northeastern Utah

    In 2001, an outbreak of acute respiratory disease occurred among persons working at a Native American archeological site at Dinosaur National Monument in northeastern Utah. Epidemiologic and environmental investigations were undertaken to determine the cause of the outbreak. A clinical case was defined by the presence of at least two of the following symptoms: self-reported fever, shortness of breath, or cough. Ten workers met the clinical case definition; 9 had serologic confirmation of coccidioidomycosis, and 8 were hospitalized. All 10 were present during sifting of dirt through screens on June 19; symptoms began 9–12 days later (median 10). Coccidioidomycosis also developed in a worker at the site in September 2001. A serosurvey among 40 other Dinosaur National Monument workers did not find serologic evidence of recent infection. This outbreak documents a new endemic focus of coccidioidomycosis, extending northward its known geographic distribution in Utah by approximately 200 miles
