Evidence for local lattice distortions in giant magnetocapacitive CdCr2S4
Raman scattering experiments on CdCr2S4 single crystals show pronounced
anomalies in intensity and frequency of optical phonon modes with an onset
temperature T*=130 K that coincides with the regime of giant magnetocapacitive
effects. A loss of inversion symmetry and Cr off-centering are deduced from the
observation of longitudinal optical and formerly infrared active modes for
T<T_c=84 K. The intensity anomalies are attributed to the enhanced electronic
polarizability of displacements that modulate the Cr-S distance and respective
hybridization. Photo doping leads to an annihilation of the symmetry reduction.
Our scenario of multiferroic effects is based on the near degeneracy of polar
and nonpolar modes and the additional low energy scale due to hybridization.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
K^-/K^+ ratio at GSI in hot and dense matter
The ratio in heavy-ion collisions at GSI energies is studied
including the properties of the participating hadrons in hot and dense matter.
The determination of the temperature and chemical potential at freeze-out
conditions compatible with the ratio is very delicate, and depends on
the approach adopted for the antikaon self-energy. Three approaches for the
self-energy are considered: non-interacting , on-shell self-energy
and single-particle spectral density. With respect to the on-shell approach,
the use of an energy dependent spectral density, including both s-
and p-wave components of the interaction, lowers considerably the
freeze-out temperature and gives rise to the "broad-band equilibration"
advocated by Brown, Rho and Song.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, talk given at the Strange Quark Matter

Selective targeting of activating and inhibitory Smads by distinct WWP2 ubiquitin ligase isoforms differentially modulates TGFβ signalling and EMT
Ubiquitin-dependent mechanisms have emerged as essential regulatory elements controlling cellular levels of Smads and TGFß-dependent biological outputs such as epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT). In this study, we identify a HECT E3 ubiquitin ligase known as WWP2 (Full-length WWP2-FL), together with two WWP2 isoforms (N-terminal, WWP2-N; C-terminal WWP2-C), as novel Smad-binding partners. We show that WWP2-FL interacts exclusively with Smad2, Smad3 and Smad7 in the TGFß pathway. Interestingly, the WWP2-N isoform interacts with Smad2 and Smad3, whereas WWP2-C interacts only with Smad7. In addition, WWP2-FL and WWP2-C have a preference for Smad7 based on protein turnover and ubiquitination studies. Unexpectedly, we also find that WWP2-N, which lacks the HECT ubiquitin ligase domain, can also interact with WWP2-FL in a TGFß-regulated manner and activate endogenous WWP2 ubiquitin ligase activity causing degradation of unstimulated Smad2 and Smad3. Consistent with our protein interaction data, overexpression and knockdown approaches reveal that WWP2 isoforms differentially modulate TGFß-dependent transcription and EMT. Finally, we show that selective disruption of WWP2 interactions with inhibitory Smad7 can stabilise Smad7 protein levels and prevent TGFß-induced EMT. Collectively, our data suggest that WWP2-N can stimulate WWP2-FL leading to increased activity against unstimulated Smad2 and Smad3, and that Smad7 is a preferred substrate for WWP2-FL and WWP2-C following prolonged TGFß stimulation. Significantly, this is the first report of an interdependent biological role for distinct HECT E3 ubiquitin ligase isoforms, and highlights an entirely novel regulatory paradigm that selectively limits the level of inhibitory and activating Smads
An eclipsing binary distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud accurate to 2 per cent
In the era of precision cosmology it is essential to determine the Hubble
Constant with an accuracy of 3% or better. Currently, its uncertainty is
dominated by the uncertainty in the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud
(LMC) which as the second nearest galaxy serves as the best anchor point of the
cosmic distance scale. Observations of eclipsing binaries offer a unique
opportunity to precisely and accurately measure stellar parameters and
distances. The eclipsing binary method was previously applied to the LMC but
the accuracy of the distance results was hampered by the need to model the
bright, early-type systems used in these studies. Here, we present distance
determinations to eight long-period, late- type eclipsing systems in the LMC
composed of cool giant stars. For such systems we can accurately measure both
the linear and angular sizes of their components and avoid the most important
problems related to the hot early-type systems. Our LMC distance derived from
these systems is demonstrably accurate to 2.2 % (49.97 +/- 0.19 (statistical)
+/- 1.11 (systematic) kpc) providing a firm base for a 3 % determination of the
Hubble Constant, with prospects for improvement to 2 % in the future.Comment: 34 pages, 5 figures, 13 tables, published in the Nature, a part of

Infrastructure for Detector Research and Development towards the International Linear Collider
The EUDET-project was launched to create an infrastructure for developing and
testing new and advanced detector technologies to be used at a future linear
collider. The aim was to make possible experimentation and analysis of data for
institutes, which otherwise could not be realized due to lack of resources. The
infrastructure comprised an analysis and software network, and instrumentation
infrastructures for tracking detectors as well as for calorimetry.Comment: 54 pages, 48 picture
Measles IgG Antibody Index Correlates with T2 Lesion Load on MRI in Patients with Early Multiple Sclerosis
Background: B cells and humoral immune responses play an important role in the pathogenesis and diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). A characteristic finding in patients with MS is a polyspecific intrathecal B cell response against neurotropic viruses, specifically against measles virus, rubella virus, and varicella zoster virus, also known as an MRZ reaction (MRZR). Here, we correlated from the routine clinical diagnostics individual IgG antibody indices (AIs) of MRZR with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in patients with first MS diagnosis. Methods/Results: MRZR was determined in 68 patients with a clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) or early relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS). Absolute AI values for measles virus, rubella virus, and varicella zoster virus were correlated with T2 lesion load and gadolinium enhancing lesions on cerebral MRI (cMRI) and cMRI combined with spinal MRI (sMRI). Measles virus AI correlated significantly with T2 lesion load on cMRI (p = 0.0312, Mann-Whitney U test) and the sum of lesions on cMRI and sMRI (p = 0.0413). Varicella zoster virus AI also showed a correlation with T2 lesion load on cMRI but did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.2893). Conclusion: The results confirm MRZR as part of the polyspecific immune reaction in MS with possible prognostic impact on MRI and clinical parameters. Furthermore, the data indicate that intrathecal measles virus IgG production correlates wit
Performance of the first prototype of the CALICE scintillator strip electromagnetic calorimeter
A first prototype of a scintillator strip-based electromagnetic calorimeter
was built, consisting of 26 layers of tungsten absorber plates interleaved with
planes of 45x10x3 mm3 plastic scintillator strips. Data were collected using a
positron test beam at DESY with momenta between 1 and 6 GeV/c. The prototype's
performance is presented in terms of the linearity and resolution of the energy
measurement. These results represent an important milestone in the development
of highly granular calorimeters using scintillator strip technology. This
technology is being developed for a future linear collider experiment, aiming
at the precise measurement of jet energies using particle flow techniques
