    CO and C_2 Absorption Toward W40 IRS 1a

    The H II region W40 harbors a small group of young, hot stars behind roughly 9 magnitudes of visual extinction. We have detected gaseous carbon monoxide (CO) and diatomic carbon (C_2) in absorption toward the star W40 IRS 1a. The 2-0 R0, R1, and R2 lines of 12CO at 2.3 micron were measured using the CSHELL on the NASA IR Telescope Facility (with upper limits placed on R3, R4, and R5) yielding an N_CO of (1.1 +/- 0.2) x 10^18 cm^-2. Excitation analysis indicates T_kin > 7 K. The Phillips system of C_2 transitions near 8775 Ang. was measured using the Kitt Peak 4-m telescope and echelle spectrometer. Radiative pumping models indicate a total C_2 column density of (7.0 +/- 0.4) x 10^14 cm^-2, two excitation temperatures (39 and 126 K), and a total gas density of n ~ 250 cm^-3. The CO ice band at 4.7 micron was not detected, placing an upper limit on the CO depletion of delta < 1 %. We postulate that the sightline has multiple translucent components and is associated with the W40 molecular cloud. Our data for W40 IRS 1a, coupled with other sightlines, shows that the ratio of CO/C_2 increases from diffuse through translucent environs.     Ion abundances and implications for photochemistry in comets Halley (1986 III) and Bradfield (1987 XXIX).

    Spectra of the plasma tails of comets P/Halley (1986 III) and P/Bradfield (1987 XXIX, also 1987s) were recorded using the Ohio State University Image Dissector Scanner (IDS) on the Perkins 1.8 m telescope at the Lowell Observatory. The ionic species CO+, N2+, CH+, and H2O+ were identified in these spectra and column densities for them were calcd. from measured fluxes. The obsd. abundance ratios of CO+/H2O+ in comets Halley and Bradfield are consistent with predictions by photochem. models, provided that CO+ and H2O+ are produced primarily from photoionization of CO and H2O, resp. However, the obsd. N2+/H2O+ ratios are at least an order of magnitude lower and the obsd. CH+/H2O+ ratios are a factor of 100 higher, than theor. results. The abundance ratio N2/CO was derived in the plasma tail of Bradfield from N2+ and CO+ data, and found to be an order of magnitude higher than a value measured in Halley. The relative ion abundances of CH+, N2+, and H2O+ in Halley are consistent with in situ measurements obtained from the Giotto spacecraft. Fluorescence efficiencies have been recalcd. for optical transitions of N2+, CH+, NH, CH, OH+, and CO and are also presented. [on SciFinder(R)

    Pre- and postperihelion abundances of gas and dust in comet Halley.

    Photometrically calibrated spectra of comet P/Halley (1986 III) were recorded between 1985 Sept. 12-1986 June 10 using the Ohio State University Image Dissector Scanner on the Perkins 72 in. telescope at the Lowell Observatory. Column densities of CN, C3, CH, C2, and NH2 were calcd. from measured fluxes in these spectra, and mol. scale lengths were deduced from the radial distribution of CN, C3, C2, and NH2. Prodn. rates were computed using the new scale lengths and a Haser model anal. Continuum emission at 4260 Å was used to derive gas-to-dust ratios. The data indicate than comet Halley was ∌2-5 times more abundant in gas and dust at postperihelion than preperihelion. On 1986 June 8 the authors obsd. the onset of a cometary outburst which appeared very strong in dust prodn. The gas-to-dust ratios appeared to be subject to changes as a result of short-term outbursts but otherwise did not exhibit any systematic dependence on heliocentric distance. Reflectivity gradients of the continuum were also measured from the spectra. While most of the continua were red, blue continua were also obsd. which may be correlated with dust outbursts.     Simplified Paper Format for Detecting HIV Drug Resistance in Clinical Specimens by Oligonucleotide Ligation

    Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a chronic infection that can be managed by antiretroviral treatment (ART). However, periods of suboptimal viral suppression during lifelong ART can select for HIV drug resistant (DR) variants. Transmission of drug resistant virus can lessen or abrogate ART efficacy. Therefore, testing of individuals for drug resistance prior to initiation of treatment is recommended to ensure effective ART. Sensitive and inexpensive HIV genotyping methods are needed in low-resource settings where most HIV infections occur. The oligonucleotide ligation assay (OLA) is a sensitive point mutation assay for detection of drug resistance mutations in HIV pol. The current OLA involves four main steps from sample to analysis: (1) lysis and/or nucleic acid extraction, (2) amplification of HIV RNA or DNA, (3) ligation of oligonucleotide probes designed to detect single nucleotide mutations that confer HIV drug resistance, and (4) analysis via oligonucleotide surface capture, denaturation, and detection (CDD). The relative complexity of these steps has limited its adoption in resource-limited laboratories. Here we describe a simplification of the 2.5-hour plate-format CDD to a 45-minute paper-format CDD that eliminates the need for a plate reader. Analysis of mutations at four HIV-1 DR codons (K103N, Y181C, M184V, and G190A) in 26 blood specimens showed a strong correlation of the ratios of mutant signal to total signal between the paper CDD and the plate CDD. The assay described makes the OLA easier to perform in low resource laboratories

    Carbon and oxygen depletion and extinction in the translucent cloud toward HD 24534 (X Persei)

    Recent studies of the gas-phase abundances of carbon and oxygen in diffuse clouds have suggested that the depletions of both elements are invariant and independent of extinction curve properties. We show, however, that in the line of sight toward HD 24534 (X Persei), the depletion of carbon is at least a factor of 3 greater than in the diffuse clouds previously surveyed. For HD 24534, the interstellar gas-phase C/H ratio is lower than the mean of diffuse sight lines by a factor of about 3.5. We conclude that the carbon depletion may be enhanced in translucent molecular clouds and also that carbon begins to show an enhanced level of depletion at lower extinctions than oxygen, which is also discussed. We argue that it is imperative to measure abundances and depletions in translucent and denser clouds in order to understand the interaction between gas and dust as the thicknesses and densities of clouds increase

    Occurrence of exercise-induced and spontaneous wide complex tachycardia during therapy with flecainide for complex ventricular arrhythmias: A probable proarrhythmic effect

    Flecainide acetate, a new antiarrhythmic agent, possesses favorable pharmacokinetic and hemodynamic properties and demonstrates highly favorable antiarrhythmic activity in patients with ventricular arrhythmias. However, the proarrhythmic potential of flecainide deserves further evaluation. In 7 (13%) of 55 consecutive patients treated with oral flecainide, 200 to 600 mg/day, for complex ventricular arrhythmias (including sustained ventricular tachycardia in 14), we observed the appearance of new or more sustained exercise-induced (five patients) or spontaneous (two patients) wide complex tachycardia. The mechanism of wide complex tachycardia appeared to be ventricular tachycardia in all seven. In our series, episodes were self-remitting or successfully treated. In four patients, wide complex tachycardia did not recur during exercise testing during alternative antiarrhythmic therapy (three patients) or no antiarrhythmic therapy (one patient). These observations raise the possibility of flecainide-related proarrhythmia, manifested as an increased propensity to exercise (activity)-induced wide complex tachycardia, which was not reliably predicted by results of Holter recordings or programmed electrical stimulation. Patients with complex ventricular arrhythmias beginning long-term treatment with oral flecainide should be considered for treadmill exercise testing together with ambulatory monitoring as part of the initial assessment of drug efficacy.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/26728/1/0000278.pd

    Observations of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies with the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope: Early Results on Mrk 1014, Mrk 463, and UGC 5101

    We present spectra taken with the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer covering the 5-38micron region of three Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs): Mrk 1014 (z=0.163), and Mrk 463 (z=0.051), and UGC 5101 (z=0.039). The continua of UGC 5101 and Mrk 463 show strong silicate absorption suggesting significant optical depths to the nuclei at 10microns. UGC 5101 also shows the clear presence of water ice in absorption. PAH emission features are seen in both Mrk 1014 and UGC 5101, including the 16.4micron line in UGC 5101. The fine structure lines are consistent with dominant AGN power sources in both Mrk 1014 and Mrk 463. In UGC 5101 we detect the [NeV] 14.3micron emission line providing the first direct evidence for a buried AGN in the mid-infrared. The detection of the 9.66micron and 17.03micron H2_{2} emission lines in both UGC 5101 and Mrk 463 suggest that the warm molecular gas accounts for 22% and 48% of the total molecular gas masses in these galaxies.Comment: Accepted in ApJ Sup.     The translucent molecular clouds toward hd 154368 .1. Extinction, abundances, and depletions

    We report the results of a comprehensive analysis of a line of sight observed using the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), toward HD 154368, an 09.5 Iab star located about 800 pc away. The line of sight intersects translucent interstellar cloud material, having a color excess E(B - V) = 0.82 and known high molecular abundances from ground-based data. The HST observations consist of high-resolution spectra obtained with grating ECH-B at wavelengths longward of 1800 Angstrom, and moderate-resolution spectra from grating G160M at shorter wavelengths. We observed some 19 wavelength settings, covering the positions of numerous atomic and molecular transitions. We also incorporate IUE and ground-based data in the study, the latter coming from several observatories at visible and millimeter wavelengths. In this paper we report on the general goals and results of the study, with emphasis on the atomic abundances and depletions. We find that the column densities of most species are slightly higher, relative to the adopted total gas column density, than in some thinner clouds in which most of the absorption arises in a single dense component. Consequently the depletions of elements from the gas phase onto the dust are less than in ''typical'' diffuse clouds such as the one toward zeta Oph. Most of the gas toward HD 154368 resides in two main clouds, centered near -3.26 and -20.95 km s(-1) (heliocentric). Our profile analyses show that the depletions in these two clouds are similar. We discuss the possible relationship of this result to the ultraviolet extinction curve toward HD 154368, derived from IUE spectra

    The Second-Generation Guide Star Catalog: Description and Properties

    The GSC-II is an all-sky database of objects derived from the uncompressed DSS that the STScI has created from the Palomar and UK Schmidt survey plates and made available to the community. Like its predecessor (GSC-I), the GSC-II was primarily created to provide guide star information and observation planning support for HST. This version, however, is already employed at some of the ground-based new-technology telescopes such as GEMINI, VLT, and TNG, and will also be used to provide support for the JWST and Gaia space missions as well as LAMOST, one of the major ongoing scientific projects in China. Two catalogs have already been extracted from the GSC-II database and released to the astronomical community. A magnitude-limited (R=18.0) version, GSC2.2, was distributed soon after its production in 2001, while the GSC2.3 release has been available for general access since 2007. The GSC2.3 catalog described in this paper contains astrometry, photometry, and classification for 945,592,683 objects down to the magnitude limit of the plates. Positions are tied to the ICRS; for stellar sources, the all-sky average absolute error per coordinate ranges from 0.2" to 0.28" depending on magnitude. When dealing with extended objects, astrometric errors are 20% worse in the case of galaxies and approximately a factor of 2 worse for blended images. Stellar photometry is determined to 0.13-0.22 mag as a function of magnitude and photographic passbands (B,R,I). Outside of the galactic plane, stellar classification is reliable to at least 90% confidence for magnitudes brighter than R=19.5, and the catalog is complete to R=20.Comment: 52 pages, 33 figures, to be published in AJ August 200

    Paired inspiratory-expiratory chest CT scans to assess for small airways disease in COPD

    Background: Gas trapping quantified on chest CT scans has been proposed as a surrogate for small airway disease in COPD. We sought to determine if measurements using paired inspiratory and expiratory CT scans may be better able to separate gas trapping due to emphysema from gas trapping due to small airway disease. Methods: Smokers with and without COPD from the COPDGene Study underwent inspiratory and expiratory chest CT scans. Emphysema was quantified by the percent of lung with attenuation < −950HU on inspiratory CT. Four gas trapping measures were defined: (1) Exp−856, the percent of lung < −856HU on expiratory imaging; (2) E/I MLA, the ratio of expiratory to inspiratory mean lung attenuation; (3) RVC856-950, the difference between expiratory and inspiratory lung volumes with attenuation between −856 and −950 HU; and (4) Residuals from the regression of Exp−856 on percent emphysema. Results: In 8517 subjects with complete data, Exp−856 was highly correlated with emphysema. The measures based on paired inspiratory and expiratory CT scans were less strongly correlated with emphysema. Exp−856, E/I MLA and RVC856-950 were predictive of spirometry, exercise capacity and quality of life in all subjects and in subjects without emphysema. In subjects with severe emphysema, E/I MLA and RVC856-950 showed the highest correlations with clinical variables. Conclusions: Quantitative measures based on paired inspiratory and expiratory chest CT scans can be used as markers of small airway disease in smokers with and without COPD, but this will require that future studies acquire both inspiratory and expiratory CT scans
