Marta Kaźmierczak’s book which is titled Przekład w kręgu intertekstualności. Na materiale tłumaczeń poezji Bolesława Leśmiana [“Translation and intertextuality: a study based on the translations of Bolesław Leśmian’s poetry”] is the first comprehensive monograph on Bolesław Leśmian’s poems that have been translated into English and Russian. The aim of the study is to examine how the “intertextual signals” from the source texts were translated into languages that are cognate with and distantly related to Polish. The author understands intertextuality as a significant relationship between a particular literary text and another text, a group of texts (e.g. philosophical), or cultural texts (e.g. a macrotext concerning Slavonic beliefs) that come before a given text in time. Sprache – Gedächtnis – Architektur. Metonymische Präsenz und metaphorische Bedeutung im Roman Austerlitz von W.G. Sebald (2001)

Language – memory – architecture. Metonymic presence and metaphorical meaning in the novel Austerlitz by W.G. Sebald (2001)By the example of the novel Austerlitz by W.G. Sebald, the present paper shows how architecture can inspire literature, being not only a subject of but also a structural model for literary texts. In Sebald’s literary depictions, topography, interiors, buildings and their plans play the role of memory metaphors – following the tradition to conceive of human memory as a spatial concept. The same buildings and architectural structures, presented on photographs combined with the verbal text, become metonymies which re-present the past and the repressed trauma. A number of space metaphors used in Austerlitz are examined: concepts expressing the notion of the hermetic, of dislocation, estrangement, death of cultural memory, of the protagonist’s defence mechanism against trauma. Then, Sebald‘s depiction of language as a maze is considered in the context of the relationship between aphasia as language disorder and metonymy as a poetic means – an analogy going back to R.Jakobson. Finally, Sebald’s „metonymic interaction“ between language and pictures is examined, allowing the conclusion that metaphors of memory in Austerlitz have a rather traditional character, while the metonymies are innovative and have a great impact on the reader/spectator

Mythos, Archetyp und Translation. Die Prosa von Bruno Schulz im Kontext der Ideen von Thomas Mann und Carl Gustav Jung

Der Beitrag handelt von den Beziehungen zwischen den Werken des polnisches Schriftstellers Bruno Schulz (1892-1942) und der kulturphilosophischen Reflexion von Thomas Mann sowie der Tiefenpsychologie von C.G. Jung. Das OEuvre von Schulz erscheint als diskursive Translation von Konzepten wie dem Mythos, dem Archetyp und dem kollektiv Unbewussten, die der polnische Autor in sein eigenes poetologisches Programm überträgt. Die vorhandenen deutschen Übersetzungen von Schulz’ Texten geben diese intertextuelle Relation nicht wieder: Sie sind nicht in der Lage, die Schlüsselidee vom Künstler als Medium des kollektiv Unbewussten zu vermitteln und implizieren eine andere Sprachphilosophie als diejenige, die im Werk von Schulz verschlüsselt ist.The paper deals with the relations between the works of the Polish author Bruno Schulz (1892-1942), some anthropological and philosophical concepts of Thomas Mann and the depth psychology of C.G. Jung. Schulz’s OEuvre appears as an interdiscursive translation of such concepts as the mythos, the archetypes and the common unconscious – categories which Schulz transformed into his own poetical programme. The translations of Schulz’ works into German do not render this intertextual relationship though. They do not convey the crucial idea of the artist being a medium of the common unconscious, and imply a language philosophy which is different from that intended by the Polish writer.Artykuł skupia się na relacjach między pisarstwem Brunona Schulza (1892-1942) a refleksją filozoficzno-kulturową Tomasza Manna oraz psychologią C.G. Junga. Twórczość Schulza ujmowana jest jako przekład interdyskursywny takich koncepcji, jak: mit, archetyp i nieświadomość zbiorowa, które autor Mityzacji rzeczywistości przekształca we własny program poetologiczny. Dostępne dziś przekłady na język niemiecki nie odzwierciedlają tej relacji intertekstualnej: nie przekazują kluczowej idei artysty jako medium nieświadomości zbiorowej, implikują ponadto filozofię języka odmienną od tej, która zawarta jest w twórczości Schulza

Molecular beam epitaxy of the half-Heusler antiferromagnet CuMnSb

We report growth of CuMnSb thin films by molecular beam epitaxy on InAs(001) substrates. The CuMnSb layers are compressively strained (0.6~\text{%}) due to lattice mismatch. The thin films have a $\omega$ full width half max of $7.7^{''}$ according to high resolution X-ray diffraction, and a root mean square roughness of $0.14~\text{nm}$ as determined by atomic force microscopy. Magnetic and electrical properties are found to be consistent with reported values from bulk samples. We find a N\'eel temperature of $62~\text{K}$, a Curie-Weiss temperature of $-65~\text{K}$ and an effective moment of $5.9~\mu_{\text{B}}/\text{f.u.}$. Transport measurements confirm the antiferromagetic transition and show a residual resistivity at $4~\text{K}$ of $35~\mu\Omega\cdot \text{cm}$.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted in PR

Elevated circulating Hsp70 levels are correlative for malignancies in different mammalian species

Circulating Hsp70 levels were determined in feline and porcine cohorts using two different ELISA systems. These comparative animal models of larger organisms often reflect diseases, and especially malignant tumors, better than conventional rodent models. It is therefore essential to investigate the biology and utility of tumor biomarkers in animals such as cats and pigs. In this study, levels of free Hsp70 in the blood of cats with spontaneously occurring tumors were detected using a commercial Hsp70 ELISA (R&D Systems). Sub-analysis of different tumor groups revealed that animals with tumors of epithelial origin presented with significantly elevated circulating Hsp70 concentrations. In addition to free Hsp70 levels measured with the R&D Systems Hsp70 ELISA, levels of exosomal Hsp70 were determined using the compHsp70 ELISA in pigs. Both ELISA systems detected significantly elevated Hsp70 levels (R&D Systems: median 24.9 ng/mL; compHsp70: median 44.2 ng/mL) in the blood of a cohort of APC$^{1311/+}$ pigs diagnosed with high-grade adenoma polyps, and the R&D Systems Hsp70 ELISA detected also elevated Hsp70 levels in animals with low-grade polyps. In contrast, in flTP53$^{R167H}$ pigs, suffering from malignant osteosarcoma, the compHsp70 ELISA (median 674.32 ng/mL), but not the R&D Systems Hsp70 ELISA (median 4.78 ng/mL), determined significantly elevated Hsp70 concentrations, indicating that in tumor-bearing animals, the dominant form of Hsp70 is of exosomal origin. Our data suggest that both ELISA systems are suitable for detecting free circulating Hsp70 levels in pigs with high-grade adenoma, but only the compHsp70 ELISA can measure elevated, tumor-derived exosomal Hsp70 levels in tumor-bearing animals
