    Wingtip vortex in a NACA0012 airfoil and its active control

    Contribución mediante sesión pósterWe conduct experiments in a towing-tank to analyse the flow patterns of wingtip vortices in a NACA 0012 airfoil. In this experimental research, we provide PIV measurements and flow visualisations. Without active control, several parameters are given experimentally as function of the Reynolds number, so we compare these data with the theoretical models of Batchelor, and Moore and Saffman together with DNS. Secondly, we analyse the effect of a continuous injection in the spanwise direction. The continuous jet has a strong influence on the wing-tip vortex formation. We explore this effect at low chord based Reynolds number ranging from 7000 up to 20000. We change the aspect ratio of the injection, R, defined as the ratio of the velocities between the jet (Uj) and free-stream (U). For R=1, we find that the jet strongly affects the wingtip vortex formation with a sudden decrement of the axial vorticity and the azimuthal velocity. This technique is a challenge and a promising tool to reduce the intensity of the vortex core.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

    On the effect of low blowing ratio continuous jets on wingtip vortex characteristics

    Vortices are an unavoidable effect of flight, which appear behind the wing with a bounded length. The strength of these vortices, which are extremely stable, is due to the lift force [1]. That is the reason why this phenomenon is especially relevant during take-off and landing operations. In these situations, when aircraft are departing from or arriving to the airport runways, the following aircraft might feel two counter-rotating vortices which remain long time under normal environmental conditions. Unfortunately, this huge rotation of airflow patterns always destabilizes the following aircraft. Consequently, trailing vortices have a mighty influence on the air traffic control of airport runways, and they have justified the research interest in this topic since the 1960's [2].     Ribonucleotides and manganese ions improve non-homologous end joining by human Polμ

    Human DNA polymerase mu (Polμ), a family X member involved in DNA repair, has both template-directed and terminal transferase (template-independent) activities. In addition to their ability to incorporate untemplated nucleotides, another similarity between Polµ and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) is their promiscuity in using ribonucleotides (NTPs), whose physiological significance is presently unknown. As shown here, Polµ can use NTPs instead of deoxynucleotides (dNTPs) during non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) of non-complementary ends, a Polµ-specific task. Moreover, a physiological concentration of Mn 2+ ions did benefit Polµ-mediated NHEJ by improving the efficiency and accuracy of nucleotide insertion. Analysis of different mutations in the ‘steric gate’ of the active site indicated that Polµ is taking advantage of an open active site, valid for selecting alternative activating metal ions and nucleotides as substrates. This versatility would allow ad hoc selection of the most appropriate nucleotide/metal ion combination for individual NHEJ events to gain efficiency without a cost in terms of fidelity, thus widening the spectrum of available solutions to position a discontinuous template strand in proper register for connection

    Direct and indirect approaches based on paper analysis by Py-GC/MS for estimating the age of documents

    The age of a relatively old document is one of the pending issues to be resolved in the field of forensic documentary examination. Although nowadays there are a variety of analytical methodologies focused in the analysis of inks for dating documents, the paper analysis has attained little attention. This work aims to develop two complementary approaches for estimating the age of documents based on paper analysis employing the pyrolysis technique coupled to gas chromatography with detection by mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS): (i) a direct approach using the pyrolytic fingerprints and multivariate regression with artificially aged samples, and (ii) an indirect approach based on the identification of compounds characteristic of the document period. The direct approach has successfully allowed the age estimation of relatively old documents under police custody (up to 30 years of age) and the determination of a relation between the natural and the accelerated aging of paper under the used conditions. This approach is applicable to papers that have the same (or similar) composition and have been stored under comparable storage conditions. Additionally, the indirect approach is presented as an interesting perspective to ratify valuable information of the document age

    Human DNA polymerases mu (Polµ) and lambda (Polλ) are X family members involved in the repair of double-strand breaks in DNA during non-homologous end joining. Crucial abilities of these enzymes include bridging of the two 3′ single-stranded overhangs and trans-polymerization using one 3′ end as primer and the other as template, to minimize sequence loss. In this context, we have studied the importance of a previously uncharacterised sequence (‘brooch’), located at the N-terminal boundary of the Polß-like polymerase core, and formed by Tyr141, Ala142, Cys143, Gln144 and Arg145 in Polµ, and by Trp239, Val240, Cys241, Ala242 and Gln243 in Polλ. The brooch is potentially implicated in the maintenance of a closed conformation throughout the catalytic cycle, and our studies indicate that it could be a target of Cdk phosphorylation in Polµ. The brooch is irrelevant for 1 nt gap filling, but of specific importance during end joining: single mutations in the conserved residues reduced the formation of two ended synapses and strongly diminished the ability of Polµ and polymerase lambda to perform non-homologous end joining reactions in vitro

    A Tandem Drone-ground Vehicle for Accessing Isolated Locations for First Aid Emergency Response in Case of Disaster

    The collapse of infrastructures is very often a complicating factor for the early emergency actuations after a disaster. A proper plan to better cover the needs of the affected people within the disaster area while maintaining life-saving relief operations is mandatory hence. In this paper, we use a drone for flying over a set of difficult-to-access locations for imaging issues to get information to build a risk assessment as the earliest stage of the emergency operations. While the drone provides the flexibility required to visit subsequently a sort of isolated locations, it needs a commando vehicle in ground for (i) monitoring the deployment of operations and (ii) being a recharging station where the drone gets fresh batteries. This work proposes a decision-making process to plan the mission, which is composed by the ground vehicle stopping points and the sequence of locations visited for each drone route. We propose a Genetic Algorithm (GA) which has proven to be helpful in finding good solutions in short computing times. We provide experimental analysis on the factors effecting the performance of the output solutions, around an illustrative test instance. Results show the applicability of these techniques for providing proper solutions to the studied problem
