Quid Pro Quo: A Mechanism for Fair Collaboration in Networked Systems

Collaboration may be understood as the execution of coordinated tasks (in the most general sense) by groups of users, who cooperate for achieving a common goal. Collaboration is a fundamental assumption and requirement for the correct operation of many communication systems. The main challenge when creating collaborative systems in a decentralized manner is dealing with the fact that users may behave in selfish ways, trying to obtain the benefits of the tasks but without participating in their execution. In this context, Game Theory has been instrumental to model collaborative systems and the task allocation problem, and to design mechanisms for optimal allocation of tasks. In this paper, we revise the classical assumptions and propose a new approach to this problem. First, we establish a system model based on heterogenous nodes (users, players), and propose a basic distributed mechanism so that, when a new task appears, it is assigned to the most suitable node. The classical technique for compensating a node that executes a task is the use of payments (which in most networks are hard or impossible to implement). Instead, we propose a distributed mechanism for the optimal allocation of tasks without payments. We prove this mechanism to be robust event in the presence of independent selfish or rationally limited players. Additionally, our model is based on very weak assumptions, which makes the proposed mechanisms susceptible to be implemented in networked systems (e.g., the Internet).Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, 3 algorithm

Quantifying the Impact of the 2022 Formula One Technical Regulations on Wake Turbulence: A Numerical Analysis

For the 2022 Formula One (F1) season, the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) introduced a new set of technical regulations that reduce the complexity of the aerodynamic devices such as the spoilers, often called wings. The objective of this regulation change is to reduce the amount of turbulence produced, which should allow the cars to trail behind one another closer and make for easier overtaking, thereby increasing the competitiveness of the sport. The present study evaluates and quantifies the aerodynamic performance of a 2022 F1 car by using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analyses. Both a study of a 2022 specification rear wing and a 2021 specification rear wing are assessed to determine how the new technical regulations affect the turbulence in the wake of the car. The study is performed by taking cut planes in the fluid domain downstream of the F1 rear wing models and integrating turbulent kinetic energy across the planes to quantify the turbulence in the wake. With this analysis, a comparison between the 2022 and 2021 specification rear wings can be performed to determine the magnitude of impact the new technical regulations produce. From this, a conclusion could be made regarding the effectiveness of the 2022 F1 technical regulations, and whether the regulation change was justified

Proyecto de Graduación (Licenciatura en Ingeniería Forestal) Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica, Escuela de Ingeniería Forestal, 2014.Three different treatments were applied to wooden particles from reused pallets of Pinus sp: hot water wash, unwashed and unwashed with calcium carbonate. These wooden particles were incorporated with cement, sand and stone powder to form a mixture in different proportion in relation to weight to manufacture blocks, which were evaluated in hardening using the velocity of ultrasonic pulse (VPU) and the density during the first 21 and 15 days respectively, water absorption, modulus of rupture (MR) in flexion, abrasion resistance after 28 days of manufacture and resistance to attack by decay fungi during 16 weeks. Results showed that hardening occurs at 8 days with variation in the VPU and density. Moisture absorption varies between 15 and 22% with a tendency to decrease as the proportion decreases or as the wooden particles load decreases. MR ranged from 0.40 to 1.23 MPa and blocks with unwashed wooden particles and calcium carbonate showed the highest significant differences. In abrasion resistance, blocks with unwashed wooden particles reported the best results. Finally, it was concluded that, the mixture with 60:40 proportion (concrete: wood) for blocks with washed wooded particles and calcium carbonate, shows a good performance in all the parameters evaluated. Besides, these blocks are not attacked by decay fungi.

This work analyzes one of the most important iconographies for the representation of the Black Africans in the 17th century in Spain and America. It is the image of the washing of a Black African that Alciato incorporates in his book “Emblems” as a sign of the impossible. This image’s influence is studied in American literature and in paintings, especially in a canvas that belongs to Aguado’s collection. This painting was attributed to Velázquez according to the inventory of sale in Paris
