Deconstructing the I and SLA in ISLA: One curricular approach

    Get PDF
Instructed second language acquisition (ISLA) has been referenced in the larger field of the SLA literature for over two and a half decades. Currently, there are several theoretical underpinnings accounting for processes assumed to play a role in ISLA and quite an impressive number of studies have empirically addressed some aspect(s) of ISLA. Recently, a lengthy and relatively cohesive treatise of this substrand of SLA research in relation to both theoretical, empirical, and pedagogical perspectives has been published in two books (cf. Leow, 2015a; Loewen, 2015), and a new model of the L2 learning process in ISLA has been proposed (Leow, 2015a). These publications are timely and important given that the concept of ISLA not only needs to be clearly defined but also situated contextually. To this end, this article (a) revisits current definitions of ISLA in the SLA literature with the aim of identifying specific features of ISLA that underlie such definitions, (b) deconstructs ISLA by probing deeper into what comprises the terms instructed and SLA in ISLA, (c) provides a brief summary of the cognitive processes and variables postulated by the theoretical underpinnings of ISLA and pertinent empirical research, (d) recommends that ISLA be observed from one curricular approach together with its empirical and pedagogical ramifications, and (e) provides some measure of direction future ISLA research may follow

Browsing Digital Collections with Reconfigurable Faceted Thesauri

Faceted thesauri group classification terms into hierarchically arranged facets. They enable faceted browsing, a well-known browsing technique that makes it possible to navigate digital collections by recursively choosing terms in the facet hierarchy. In this paper we develop an approach to achieve faceted browsing in live collections, in which not only the contents but also the thesauri can be constantly reorganized. We start by introducing a digital collection model letting users reconfigure facet hierarchies. Then we introduce navigation automata as an efficient way of supporting faceted browsing in these collections. Since, in the worst-case, the number of states in these automata can grow exponentially, we propose two alternative indexing strategies able to bridge this complexity: inverted indexes and navigation dendrograms. Finally, by comparing these strategies in the context of Clavy, a system for managing collections with reconfigurable structures in digital humanities and educational settings, we provide evidence that navigation dendrogram organization outperforms the inverted index-based one

Learning Object Repositories with Dynamically Reconfigurable Metadata Schemata

[ES] In this paper we describe a model of learning object repository in which users have full control on the metadata schemata. Thus, they can define new schemata and they can reconfigure existing ones in a collaborative fashion. As consequence, the repository must react to changes in schemata in a dynamic and responsive way. Since schemata enable operations like navigation and search, dynamic reconfigurability requires clever indexing strategies, resilient to changes in these schemata. For this purpose, we have used conventional inverted indexing approaches and we have also devised a hierarchical clusteringbased indexing model. By using Clavy, a system for managing learning object repositories in the field of the Humanities, we provide some experimental results that show how the hierarchical clustering-based model can outperform the more conventional inverted indexes-based solutions

Organometallic Nanoparticles Ligated by NHCs: Synthesis, Surface Chemistry and Ligand Effects

[EN] Over the last 20 years, the use of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) in catalysis has awakened a great interest in the scientific community, mainly due to the many advantages of this kind of nanostructures in catalytic applications. MNPs exhibit the characteristic stability of heterogeneous catalysts, but with a higher active surface area than conventional metallic materials. However, despite their higher activity, MNPs present a wide variety of active sites, which makes it difficult to control their selectivity in catalytic processes. An efficient way to modulate the activity/selectivity of MNPs is the use of coordinating ligands, which transforms the MNP surface, subsequently modifying the nanoparticle catalytic properties. In relation to this, the use of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) as stabilizing ligands has demonstrated to be an effective tool to modify the size, stability, solubility and catalytic reactivity of MNPs. Although NHC-stabilized MNPs can be prepared by different synthetic methods, this review is centered on those prepared by an organometallic approach. Here, an organometallic precursor is decomposed under H-2 in the presence of non-stoichiometric amounts of the corresponding NHC-ligand. The resulting organometallic nanoparticles present a clean surface, which makes them perfect candidates for catalytic applications and surface studies. In short, this revision study emphasizes the great versatility of NHC ligands as MNP stabilizers, as well as their influence on catalysis. This research was funded by: Proyectos Intramurales Especiales (201880E079), Primero Proyectos de Investigacion PAID-06-18 (SP20180088), Agencia Estatal de Investigacion (PID2019-104159GB-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033) and Junta de Andalucia (PY18-3208). Evaluating the whiteness of spectroscopy-based non-destructive analytical methods – Application to food analytical control

    Get PDF
Recent advancements in analytical chemistry in the food quality field have emphasized ecofriendly analytical techniques eschewing chemicals and solvents. Various methodologies exist for assessing the sustainability of analytical methods, however none has provided guidance for appraising non-destructive methods, especially predevelopment. Among these, the RGB approach stands out, evaluating method colour via three main criteria: analytical performance, environmental impact, and practical efficiency. This framework offers a comprehensive evaluation, aiming for a "white" colour denoting excellence across all three categories. This article introduces an adapted RGB method for ex-ante evaluation of new non-destructive analytical methods pre-development. It outlines key steps for evaluating method "whiteness". As a guiding example, the approach was applied to three analytical methods focussed on quality and authenticity control of edible vege- table oils utilizing solvent-free spectroscopic techniques. Results underscored a priori feasibility assessment value, aligning evaluative objectives with intended method goals.Project (ref.: CPP2021-008672), funded by MCIN/AEI/501100011033 (Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation)European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR"Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Granada / CBU
