    Trajectory Reconstruction and Uncertainty Analysis Using Mars Science Laboratory Pre-Flight Scale Model Aeroballistic Testing

    As part of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) trajectory reconstruction effort at NASA Langley Research Center, free-flight aeroballistic experiments of instrumented MSL scale models was conducted at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. The models carried an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a flush air data system (FADS) similar to the MSL Entry Atmospheric Data System (MEADS) that provided data types similar to those from the MSL entry. Multiple sources of redundant data were available, including tracking radar and on-board magnetometers. These experimental data enabled the testing and validation of the various tools and methodologies that will be used for MSL trajectory reconstruction. The aerodynamic parameters Mach number, angle of attack, and sideslip angle were estimated using minimum variance with a priori to combine the pressure data and pre-flight computational fluid dynamics (CFD) data. Both linear and non-linear pressure model terms were also estimated for each pressure transducer as a measure of the errors introduced by CFD and transducer calibration.     Deployable Aeroshell Flexible Thermal Protection System Testing

    Deployable aeroshells offer the promise of achieving larger aeroshell surface areas for entry vehicles than otherwise attainable without deployment. With the larger surface area comes the ability to decelerate high-mass entry vehicles at relatively low ballistic coefficients. However, for an aeroshell to perform even at the low ballistic coefficients attainable with deployable aeroshells, a flexible thermal protection system (TPS) is required that is capable of surviving reasonably high heat flux and durable enough to survive the rigors of construction handling, high density packing, deployment, aerodynamic loading and aerothermal heating. The Program for the Advancement of Inflatable Decelerators for Atmospheric Entry (PAIDAE) is tasked with developing the technologies required to increase the technology readiness level (TRL) of inflatable deployable aeroshells, and one of several of the technologies PAIDAE is developing for use on inflatable aeroshells is flexible TPS. Several flexible TPS layups were designed, based on commercially available materials, and tested in NASA Langley Research Center's 8 Foot High Temperature Tunnel (8ft HTT). The TPS layups were designed for, and tested at three different conditions that are representative of conditions seen in entry simulation analyses of inflatable aeroshell concepts. Two conditions were produced in a single run with a sting-mounted dual wedge test fixture. The dual wedge test fixture had one row of sample mounting locations (forward) at about half the running length of the top surface of the wedge. At about two thirds of the running length of the wedge, a second test surface drafted up at five degrees relative to the first test surface established the remaining running length of the wedge test fixture. A second row of sample mounting locations (aft) was positioned in the middle of the running length of the second test surface. Once the desired flow conditions were established in the test section the dual wedge test fixture, oriented at 5 degrees angle of attack down, was injected into the flow. In this configuration the aft sample mounting location was subjected to roughly twice the heat flux and surface pressure of the forward mounting location. The tunnel was run at two different conditions for the test series: 1) 'Low Pressure', and 2) 'High Pressure'. At 'Low Pressure' conditions the TPS layups were tested at 6W/cm2 and 11W/cm2 while at 'High Pressure' conditions the TPS layups were tested at 11W/cm2 and 20W/cm2.     A-UNIFAC modelling of binary and multicomponent phase equilibria of fatty esters+water+methanol+glycerol

    The production of methyl and ethyl esters of fatty acids is of great industrial interest, considering the direct application of these esters as biodiesel. For biodiesel purification and by-products recovery processes design and optimization, the prediction of the phase behaviour of mixtures containing fatty esters, alcohols, glycerol and water is of utmost importance. In this work we show the capability of a A-UNIFAC to correlate and predict phase behaviour of these mixtures. This GE model is an extension of UNIFAC that explicitly includes association effects between groups based on the statistical Wertheim theory [1]. For the water-esters binary systems, the residual and association parameters have been previously estimated using low pressure VLE data [1]. The use of these parameters to predict liquid-liquid equilibrium results in good agreement with experimental information on binaries of water with acetic, octanoic or dodecanoic acids methyl esters. The association effect in methanol and glycerol are represented with the same hydrogen bonding hydroxyl groups (OH) with two associating sites, one group in methanol and three in glycerol. For the residual contribution, both molecules are considered as molecular groups (CH3OH and C3H8O3). The residual interaction parameters between CH3OH and C3H8O3 were obtained by fitting isothermal liquid-liquid equilibrium data on the ternary system dodecanoic acid methyl ester-methanol–glycerol [2]. The glycerol/paraffin (C3H8O3/CH2) and glycerol/ester (C3H8O3/CCOO) interaction parameters were estimated by fitting experimental data on liquid-liquid equilibrium and infinite dilution activity coefficients of the binary systems dodecanoic acid methyl ester-glycerol and hexanoic acid methyl ester-glycerol between 320-438 K [2]. A-UNIFAC with the final set of parameters is able to predict with good agreement experimental data on binary and ternary liquid-liquid equilibria of glycerol + methanol + fatty esters as well as infinite dilution activity coefficient for this system.     High Altitude Venus Operations Concept Trajectory Design, Modeling and Simulation

    A trajectory design and analysis that describes aerocapture, entry, descent, and inflation of manned and unmanned High Altitude Venus Operation Concept (HAVOC) lighter-than-air missions is presented. Mission motivation, concept of operations, and notional entry vehicle designs are presented. The initial trajectory design space is analyzed and discussed before investigating specific trajectories that are deemed representative of a feasible Venus mission. Under the project assumptions, while the high-mass crewed mission will require further research into aerodynamic decelerator technology, it was determined that the unmanned robotic mission is feasible using current technology

    Human Mars Entry, Descent and Landing Architecture Study: Rigid Decelerators

    Several technology investments are required to develop Mars human scale Entry, Descent, and Landing (EDL) systems. Studies play the critical role of identifying the most feasible technical paths and high payoff investments. The goal of NASA's Entry, Descent and Landing Architecture Study is to inform those technology investments. In Phase 1 of the study, a point design for one lifting-body-like rigid decelerator vehicle, was developed. In Phase 2, a capsule concept was also considered to determine how it accommodated the human mission requirements. This paper summarizes the concept of operations for both rigid vehicles to deliver a 20-metric ton (t) payload to the surface of Mars. Details of the vehicle designs and flight performance are presented along with a packaging, mass sizing, and a launch vehicle fairing assessment. Finally, recommended technology investments based on the analysis of the rigid vehicles are provided

    Ubiquitous Crossmodal Stochastic Resonance in Humans: Auditory Noise Facilitates Tactile, Visual and Proprioceptive Sensations

    BACKGROUND: Stochastic resonance is a nonlinear phenomenon whereby the addition of noise can improve the detection of weak stimuli. An optimal amount of added noise results in the maximum enhancement, whereas further increases in noise intensity only degrade detection or information content. The phenomenon does not occur in linear systems, where the addition of noise to either the system or the stimulus only degrades the signal quality. Stochastic Resonance (SR) has been extensively studied in different physical systems. It has been extended to human sensory systems where it can be classified as unimodal, central, behavioral and recently crossmodal. However what has not been explored is the extension of this crossmodal SR in humans. For instance, if under the same auditory noise conditions the crossmodal SR persists among different sensory systems. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using physiological and psychophysical techniques we demonstrate that the same auditory noise can enhance the sensitivity of tactile, visual and propioceptive system responses to weak signals. Specifically, we show that the effective auditory noise significantly increased tactile sensations of the finger, decreased luminance and contrast visual thresholds and significantly changed EMG recordings of the leg muscles during posture maintenance. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: We conclude that crossmodal SR is a ubiquitous phenomenon in humans that can be interpreted within an energy and frequency model of multisensory neurons spontaneous activity. Initially the energy and frequency content of the multisensory neurons' activity (supplied by the weak signals) is not enough to be detected but when the auditory noise enters the brain, it generates a general activation among multisensory neurons of different regions, modifying their original activity. The result is an integrated activation that promotes sensitivity transitions and the signals are then perceived. A physiologically plausible model for crossmodal stochastic resonance is presented

    Screening Methodology for the Efficient Pairing of Ionic Liquids and Carbonaceous Electrodes Applied to Electric Energy Storage

    A model is presented that correlates the measured electric capacitance with the energy that comprises the desolvation, dissociation and adsorption energy of an ionic liquid into carbonaceous electrode (represented by single-wall carbon nanotubes). An original methodology is presented that allows for the calculation of the adsorption energy of ions in a host system that does not necessarily compensate the total charge of the adsorbed ions, leaving an overall net charge. To obtain overall negative (favorable) energies, adsorption energies need to overcome the energy cost for desolvation of the ion pair and its dissociation into individual ions. Smaller ions, such as BF4 −, generally show larger dissociation energies than anions such as PF6 − or TFSI−. Adsorption energies gradually increase with decreasing pore size of the CNT and show a maximum when the pore size is slightly greater than the dimensions of the adsorbed ion and the attractive van der Waals forces dominate the interaction. At smaller pore diameters, the adsorption energy sharply declines and becomes repulsive as a result of geometry deformations of the ion. Only for those diameters where the adsorption reaches maximum values is the adsorption energy sufficiently negative to balance the positive dissociation and desolvation energies.
