Danger is My Middle Name: Experimenting with SSL Vulnerabilities in Android Apps

    Get PDF
This paper presents a measurement study of information leakage and SSL vulnerabilities in popular Android apps. We perform static and dynamic analysis on 100 apps, downloaded at least 10M times, that request full network access. Our experiments show that, although prior work has drawn a lot of attention to SSL implementations on mobile platforms, several popular apps (32/100) accept all certificates and all hostnames, and four actually transmit sensitive data unencrypted. We set up an experimental testbed simulating man-in-the-middle attacks and find that many apps (up to 91% when the adversary has a certificate installed on the victim's device) are vulnerable, allowing the attacker to access sensitive information, including credentials, files, personal details, and credit card numbers. Finally, we provide a few recommendations to app developers and highlight several open research problems.Comment: A preliminary version of this paper appears in the Proceedings of ACM WiSec 2015. Automated measurements of diffuse interstellar bands in early-type star spectra Correlations with the Color Excess

Stellar spectroscopic surveys may bring useful statistical information on the links between Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs) and interstellar environment. DIB databases can also be used as a complementary tool for locating interstellar (IS) clouds. Our goal is to develop fully automated methods of DIB measurements to be applied to extensive data from stellar surveys. We present a method appropriate for early-type nearby stars, its application to high-resolution spectra of 130 targets recorded with ESO FEROS spectrograph, and comparisons with other determinations. Using a DIB average profile deduced from the most reddened stars, we performed an automated fitting of a combination of a smooth stellar continuum, the DIB profile, and, when necessary, a synthetic telluric transmission. Measurements are presented for 16 DIBs in the optical domain that could be extracted automatically: 4726.8, 4762.6, 4963.9, 5780.4, 5797.1, 5849.8, 6089.8, 6196.0, 6203.0-6204.5, 6269.8, 6283.8, 6379.3, 6445.3, 6613.6, 6660.7, and 6699.3 {\AA}.Comment: (A&A accepted

This study examined the relationship between asset quality and the profitability of the fifteen (15) quoted commercial banks in Nigeria from 1980 – 2013. The objective was to investigate the relationship between CAMELS criteria for asset quality and the profitability performance of Nigerian commercial banks. Secondary data were sourced from annual reports of the quoted commercial banks. Return on Investment (ROI) was modeled as the function of percentage of non-performing loans to Total Loans (NPL/TL), percentage of Non-performing Loans to Total Customers’ Deposit (NPL//TCD), percentage of Loan Loss Provision to Total Loans (LLP/TL) and percentage of Loan Loss Provision to Total Asset (LLP/TA). Multiple regressions with econometric view statistical package were used as data analysis method. The Ordinary Least Square properties of Augmented Dickey Fuller Test, Co-integration and Granger Causality test were employed to determine the short and long –run relationship between the dependent and the independent variables. Findings from the regression result proved that percentage of non-performing loans to Total Loans and percentage of non-performing Loans to Total Customers’ Deposit have positive relationship with Return on Investment while percentage of Loan Loss Provision to Total Loans and percentage of Loan Loss Provision to Total Asset have negative relationship with Return on Investment of the commercial banks. The Unit Root test shows stationarity of the variables in order of 1(1), the co-integration reveal long run relationship between the variables while the granger causality reveals no causal relationship among the variables. The model summary proved that the independent variables can explain 65.5% variation on the dependent variables while the F-statistics of 12.508477 and the probability of 0.000008 proved that the model is significant.  The study concludes that there is significant relationship between asset quality and the profitability of the commercial banks. It recommends that bank lending environment should be well examined before and after credit and the regulatory authorities should ensure sound bank lending environment to avoid the incidence of non-performing loans to enhance the profitability of commercial banks in Nigeria. This study examined CAMELS analysis of Nigerian quoted commercial banks from 1997– 2016 pre and post consolidation. The objective was  to x-ray and compare the Nigerian banking system soundness in the pre and post consolidation using the CAMELS criteria. Time series data of the variables were sourced from financial statements of the quoted deposit money banks within the period. The study used Capital to Risk Assets Ratio (CRA) and Adjusted Capital to Risk Assets (ACRA) as Capital Adequacy (C), Non Performing Loans and Advances to Total Assets (TLA/TA) as Assets Quality (A), Operating Expenses to Total Assets (OPE/TA), Total loans and Advances to Total Deposit (TLA/TD) as Management Quality (M), Net Interest Income to Total Assets (NII/TA) as Earnings (E), Total Liquid Assets to Total Assets (L) as liquidity (TLA/TA) and Net Interest Income to Gross Domestic Product (S) (TLA/GDP) as sensitivity. Simple average and ranking was used as data analysis method. Findings revealed that the performance of the commercial banks in the post consolidation is better than the pre-consolidation. The study concludes that there is a significant difference between the pre and post consolidation of the quoted commercial banks using the CAMELS criteria. It recommends that the banking sector reforms should be strengthened deepened and the capital and management of the commercial banks should be used for effective to achieve the objective of the banking sector reforms. The paper examines the role of natural resources in Nigeria-Cameroun border dispute Nigerian state administered the areas commonly known as Bakassi peninsula which falls along the borders between Nigeria and Cameroun for decades peacefully However from 1991 the Cameroun government challenged the rights of Nigeria government over the peninsula which culminated in a suit at the International Court of Justice ICJ at The Hague Reflecting on archival materials and relevant documents analysed qualitatively using historical approach revealed that the dispute was driven largely by the availability of natural resources such as crude oil and sea products in the peninsula The contestation of the ownership of the peninsula made the Cameroonians forces to terrorised Nigerians living in the area which drew the intervention of the Nigerian armed forces in a punitive mission to the peninsula and beyond from 198 1 Consequently the government of Cameroun took the matter to ICJ for adjudication which ruled in favour of Cameroun relying largely on the 11 March 1913 and 29 April 1913Anglo-German colonial boundaries agreements The paper posited that the contribution that the exploration of huge natural resources including crude oil deposit that the peninsula possess will do to the economy of both countries influenced the violent dimensions the dispute took including the formation of Bakassi Volunteer Force even after the case was taken to the IC

The research was motivated by reports rise in garlic prices to be pros and cons in our country. In this study, described the media frame the news of current government policy garlic price hikes, through projection and suppression issues. The method used is a qualitative method of analysis framing. The analysis used in this study is the concept Entman models that use four ways of analyzing framing. The four methods used in the analysis of models framing Robert N. Entman, namely: Define Problem, Diagnose Causes, Make Moral Judgment, Treatment Recommendation. This study is the news - news of garlic price hikes in the newspaper Jawa Pos and Kompas dated 11 March to 15 March 2013. Results of our analysis can be seen that in Jawa Pos Newspaper garlic looked up prices as import problems, because the government's efforts to limit imports of horticultural products. So that loading and unloading activities at the port of imported products faltered. Moral judgments on the rise in onion prices the government has made efforts to be issued to importers registered SPI. The Government provides a solution to increase the amount of imported onions to garlic prices hit effort. Meanwhile, Compass has the view that the rise in garlic prices, the government considered to be less vigilant in anticipation. Importers tend to prioritize items arrived in Indonesia as soon as possible. Government is causing a problem because the two regulations, (RIPH), and (SPI) which must be taken care importers. Both moral judgment that the regulation is the protection of the farmers, the government will increase imports to address the problem of rising prices of some food products. However, the government will not forget to increase agricultural production. The government should speed up the process of issuing importnya recommendation. Keywords: News, framin
