    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to analyze the kinematics of two Taekwondo kicks performed by a high level female athlete. The kicks were compared according to three main factors: a) type of kick (Bandal or Dolyo), b) foot of kick (right or left foot); c) kick starting with the kicking foot in front of the support limb or behind (front or back foot). The DVideo kinematical analysis system was used to reconstruct the 3D coordinates of twelve landmarks. The study was able to identify the main differences between the two most frequently used Taekwondo kicks, showed that the initial condition should be considered when comparing kicks and revealed differences between kicks accomplished with right or left foot of this high level athlete

THE STUDY OF SWIMMERS’S HAND AND FOREARM USING COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS

    Get PDF
Computational Fluid Dynamics has been widely used in biomechanics studies applied to medicine and sport. In this study we developed a 3-D model for swimmer’s hand/forearm forces using Computational Fluid Dynamics. Models used in the simulations were created in CAD, based on realistic dimensions of a right adult human hand/forearm. The governing system of equations considered was the incompressible Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations implemented with Fluent® code. The drag coefficient was the main responsible for propulsion, with a maximum value of force propulsion corresponding to a pitch angle of 90º. The lift coefficient seemed to play a less important role in the generation of propulsive force with pitch angles of 0º and 90º but it is important with a pitch angle of 45º. It was demonstrated the relevance of applying CFD in the propulsive force measurements, using a more realistic model of a human segment

    Get PDF
This paper presents results of a study of the Brazilian system operation in respect to voltage stability criteria. The analyses are applied using real-life data from the operation and planning. The system is divided in 4 regions: North, Northeast, South and Southeast/West Center. System stability margin is evaluated for each one of these areas. The results show that Brazilian system has stability margin much lower than the existing voltage stability criteria, limited by the Southeast/West Center region. A detailed analysis of this critical area is performed. This paper also presents the stability margin behavior during a typical weekday curve and a contingency analysis. The contingency severity is verified by using the modal analysis technique assessing each contingency impact classifying as local, area or systemic.

    Get PDF
The prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes in Southern Brazil was studied in the plasma of 100 HCV-RNA-positive patients attended in Porto Alegre, South of Brazil. Reverse transcriptionpolymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) products from the 5' noncoding region were double digested with Rsal-Haeiii and BstNl-Hinfi and analyzed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). Three genotypes (1, 2 and 3) were demonstrable, the most prevalent being HCV type I (55 of 100 patients, 55%), followed by HCV type 3 (37 of 100 patients, 37%) and HCVtype 2 (8 oflOO patients, 8%). There was an unusual high prevalence of genotype 3, in contrast to the majority of published data from the Southeast region

What are the Best Hierarchical Descriptors for Complex Networks?

This work reviews several hierarchical measurements of the topology of complex networks and then applies feature selection concepts and methods in order to quantify the relative importance of each measurement with respect to the discrimination between four representative theoretical network models, namely Erd\"{o}s-R\'enyi, Barab\'asi-Albert, Watts-Strogatz as well as a geographical type of network. The obtained results confirmed that the four models can be well-separated by using a combination of measurements. In addition, the relative contribution of each considered feature for the overall discrimination of the models was quantified in terms of the respective weights in the canonical projection into two dimensions, with the traditional clustering coefficient, hierarchical clustering coefficient and neighborhood clustering coefficient resulting particularly effective. Interestingly, the average shortest path length and hierarchical node degrees contributed little for the separation of the four network models.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

Solubility and solid phase studies of isomeric phenolic acids in pure solvents

The solubilities of gallic, protocatechuic, gentisic or α-resorcylic acids were measured in nine pure solvents (water, methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, 2-butanone, ethyl acetate, acetonitrile and dimethylformamide) at 298.15 K and 313.15 K, using the analytical isothermal shake-flask method. Additionally, solid phase studies of the selected phenolic acids were carried out using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), giving access to important data on melting properties as well as on the structure of the solid phase before and after the dissolution. The NRTL-SAC model coupled to the reference solvent approach (RSA) were applied to correlate the solubility data in a set of seven solvents and, after used to predict the solubility in 1-propanol and dimethylformamide. Average relative deviations (ARD) between 28 and 40% for the correlation and between 16 and 59% for the predictions were obtained. These values are within the order of magnitude usually found for such type of semi-predictive models, using a limited set of data. This work is supported by: Project “AIProcMat@N2020 - Advanced Industrial Processes and Materials for a Sustainable Northern Region of Portugal 2020”, supported by Norte Portugal Regional Operational Programme (NORTE 2020), under the Portugal 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF); Project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-006984 – Associate Laboratory LSRE-LCM funded by ERDF through COMPETE2020 - Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização (POCI); Project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-030463 financed by COMPETE and Portugal2020 and national funds through FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia . Myosin Va interacts with the exosomal protein spermine synthase

    Get PDF
Myosin Va (MyoVa) is an actin-based molecular motor that plays key roles in the final stages of secretory pathways, including neurotransmitter release. Several studies have addressed how MyoVa coordinates the trafficking of secretory vesicles, but why this molecular motor is found in exosomes is still unclear. In this work, using a yeast two-hybrid screening system, we identified the direct interaction between the globular tail domain (GTD) of MyoVa and four protein components of exosomes: the WD repeat-containing protein 48 (WDR48), the cold shock domain-containing protein E1 (CSDE1), the tandem C2 domain-containing protein 1 (TC2N), and the enzyme spermine synthase (SMS). The interaction between the GTD of MyoVa and SMS was further validated in vitro and displayed a Kd in the low micromolar range (3.5 ± 0.5 µM). SMS localized together with MyoVa in cytoplasmic vesicles of breast cancer MCF-7 and neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cell lines, known to produce exosomes. Moreover, MYO5A knockdown decreased the expression of SMS gene and rendered the distribution of SMS protein diffuse, supporting a role for MyoVa in SMS expression and targeting393CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQCOORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DE PESSOAL DE NÍVEL SUPERIOR - CAPESFUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESP478059/2009-4; 486841/2012-0; 457603/2013-5; 309187/2015-088887.137811/2017-002014/09720-9; 2018/04017-9; 2013/08135-2; 2014/00584-5; 2011/20229-7; 2009/14257-8; 2016/10862-8; 2014/03989-6; 2004/08868-0The present work was supported by FAPESP [grant number: 2014/09720-9 (to M.T.M.); grant numbers: 2018/04017-9 and 2013/08135-2 (to E.M.E); grant number: 2014/00584-5 (to L.G.D.); grant number: 2011/20229-7 (to L.H.P.A); grant number: 2009/14257-8 (to A.F.Z.N.); grant number: 2016/10862-8 (to J.S.A); grant number: 2014/03989-6 (to R.M.P.S.J.)]. Hierarchical characterization of complex networks

While the majority of approaches to the characterization of complex networks has relied on measurements considering only the immediate neighborhood of each network node, valuable information about the network topological properties can be obtained by considering further neighborhoods. The current work discusses on how the concepts of hierarchical node degree and hierarchical clustering coefficient (introduced in cond-mat/0408076), complemented by new hierarchical measurements, can be used in order to obtain a powerful set of topological features of complex networks. The interpretation of such measurements is discussed, including an analytical study of the hierarchical node degree for random networks, and the potential of the suggested measurements for the characterization of complex networks is illustrated with respect to simulations of random, scale-free and regular network models as well as real data (airports, proteins and word associations). The enhanced characterization of the connectivity provided by the set of hierarchical measurements also allows the use of agglomerative clustering methods in order to obtain taxonomies of relationships between nodes in a network, a possibility which is also illustrated in the current article.Comment: 19 pages, 23 figure
