A multi-temporal phenology based classification approach for Crop Monitoring in Kenya
The SBAM (Satellite Based Agricultural Monitoring) project, funded by the Italian Space Agency aims at: developing a validated satellite imagery based method for estimating and updating the agricultural areas in the region of Central-Africa; implementing an automated process chain capable of providing periodical agricultural land cover maps of the area of interest and, possibly, an estimate of the crop yield. The project aims at filling the gap existing in the availability of high spatial resolution maps of the agricultural areas of Kenya. A high spatial resolution land cover map of Central-Eastern Africa including Kenya was compiled in the year 2000 in the framework of the Africover project using Landsat images acquired, mostly, in 1995. We investigated the use of phenological information in supporting the use of remotely sensed images for crop classification and monitoring based on Landsat 8 and, in the near future, Sentinel 2 imagery. Phenological information on crop condition was collected using time series of NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) based on Landsat 8 images. Kenyan countryside is mainly characterized by a high number of fragmented small and medium size farmlands that dramatically increase the difficulty in classification; 30 m spatial resolution images are not enough for a proper classification of such areas. So, a pan-sharpening FIHS (Fast Intensity Hue Saturation) technique was implemented to increase image resolution from 30 m to 15 m. Ground test sites were selected, searching for agricultural vegetated areas from which phenological information was extracted. Therefore, the classification of agricultural areas is based on crop phenology, vegetation index behaviour retrieved from a time series of satellite images and on AEZ (Agro Ecological Zones) information made available by FAO (FAO, 1996) for the area of interest. This paper presents the results of the proposed classification procedure in comparison with land cover maps produced in the past years by other projects. The results refer to the Nakuru County and they were validated using field campaigns data. It showed a satisfactory overall accuracy of 92.66 % which is a significant improvement with respect to previous land cover maps
Criteria for the Evaluation of Italian Scientific Institutes for Research, Hospitalization and Healthcare (IRCCS): Comparison with European Standards and Certification Models
The definition of the title 'Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico' (IRCCS) and how this title is given by the Italian Ministry of Health is presented. Specifically, the first assessment of a commission concerning the essential information for the accreditation process is introduced. Moreover, the two years review process that aims to collect last updated information of the IRCCS, to identify level of excellence and critical aspects, is also explained. The present Italian forms and international manuals like Joint Commission, OECI and HCERES were schematized using UML diagrams. The current IRCCS accreditation forms are presented with the suggested updates organized in some levels of structuring. We compared the Italian forms with the manuals required to obtain international certifications (Joint Commission and OECI) and we analyzed the criteria for the evaluation of research units in France (the HCERES standards). Although it is a preliminary study, the use of UML diagrams allows to schematize a new accreditation model, in line with European guidelines and the most important international certifications
Sea-level rise along the Emilia-Romagna coast (Northern Italy) in 2100: scenarios and impacts
As a consequence of climate change and land subsidence, coastal zones are
directly impacted by sea-level rise. In some particular areas, the effects on
the ecosystem and urbanisation are particularly enhanced. We focus on the
Emilia-Romagna (E-R) coastal plain in Northern Italy, bounded by the Po river
mouth to the north and by the Apennines to the south. The plain is
 ∼ 130 km long and is characterised by wide areas below mean sea
level, in part made up of reclaimed wetlands. In this context, several
morphodynamic factors make the shore and back shore unstable. During next
decades, the combined effects of land subsidence and of the sea-level rise as
a result of climate change are expected to enhance the shoreline instability,
leading to further retreat. The consequent loss of beaches would impact the
economy of the region, which is tightly connected with tourism
infrastructures. Furthermore, the loss of wetlands and dunes would threaten
the ecosystem, which is crucial for the preservation of life and the
environment. These specific conditions show the importance of a precise
definition of the possible local impacts of the ongoing and future climate
variations. The aim of this work is the characterisation of vulnerability in
different sectors of the coastal plain and the recognition of the areas in
which human intervention is urgently required. The Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) sea-level scenarios are
merged with new high-resolution terrain models, current data for local
subsidence and predictions of the flooding model in_CoastFlood in
order to develop different scenarios for the impact of sea-level rise
projected to year 2100. First, the potential land loss due to the combined
effect of subsidence and sea-level rise is extrapolated. Second, the increase
in floodable areas as a result of storm surges is quantitatively determined.
The results are expected to support the regional mitigation and adaptation
strategies designed in response to climate change
First record of Acanthurus chirurgus (Perciformes: Acanthuridae) in the Mediterranean Sea, with some distributional notes on Mediterranean Acanthuridae
The occurrence of the doctorfish Acanthurus chirurgus is reported for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea, off Elba Island, Tyrrhenian Sea (42.726667° N, 10.434444° E). This record is tentatively related to aquarium release. The occurrence of Acanthuridae in the Mediterranean Sea is briefly reviewed, and some distributional notes on Acanthurus coeruleus and Acanthurus monroviae in the Mediterranean are provided
Efficacy of pulsatile flow perfusion in adult cardiac surgery: Hemodynamic energy and vascular reactivity
Background: The role of pulsatile (PP) versus non-pulsatile (NP) flow during a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is still debated. This study’s aim was to analyze hemodynamic effects, endothelial reactivity and erythrocytes response during a CPB with PP or NP. Methods: Fifty-two patients undergoing an aortic valve replacement were prospectively randomized for surgery with either PP or NP flow. Pulsatility was evaluated in terms of energy equivalent pressure (EEP) and surplus hemodynamic energy (SHE). Systemic (SVRi) and pulmonary (PVRi) vascular resistances, endothelial markers levels and erythrocyte nitric-oxide synthase (eNOS) activity were collected at different perioperative time-points. Results: In the PP group, the resultant EEP was 7.3% higher than the mean arterial pressure (MAP), which corresponded to 5150 ± 2291 ergs/cm3 of SHE. In the NP group, the EEP and MAP were equal; no SHE was produced. The PP group showed lower SVRi during clamp-time (p = 0.06) and lower PVRi after protamine administration and during first postoperative hours (p = 0.02). Lower SVRi required a higher dosage of norepinephrine in the PP group (p = 0.02). Erythrocyte eNOS activity results were higher in the PP patients (p = 0.04). Renal function was better preserved in the PP group (p = 0.001), whereas other perioperative variables were comparable between the groups. Conclusions: A PP flow during a CPB results in significantly lower SVRi, PVRi and increased eNOS production. The clinical impact of increased perioperative vasopressor requirements in the PP group deserves further evaluation
Bioinspired hybrid eumelanin-TiO2 antimicrobial nanostructures: the key role of organo-inorganic frameworks in tuning eumelanin's biocide action mechanism through membrane interaction
Intrinsic biocide efficacy of eumelanins can be markedly enhanced through a templated formation in the presence of a TiO2-sol, leading to hybrid TiO2-melanin nanostructures. However, mechanisms and processes behind biocide activity still remain poorly understood. This paper discloses the fundamental mechanism of action of these systems providing mechanistic information on their peculiar interaction with Escherichia coli strains. To this purpose biocide characterization is combined with Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to investigate radical species produced by the hybrids as well as their interactions with Gram(-) external bacterial membranes. Experimental results indicate that TiO2 mediated eumelanin polymerization leads to a peculiar mechanism of action of hybrid nanostructures, whose strong interactions with bacterial membranes enhance the action of reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by eumelanin degradation itself, also concurring with the final biocide action. These findings provide strategic information for the development of eumelanin-based systems with enhanced activity against drug-resistant strains
Pollen extract in association with vitamins provides early pain relief in patients affected by chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome
The therapeutic efficacy for chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is currently unsatisfactory. The aim of the present study was to assess the safety and efficacy of pollen extract in association with vitamins (DEPROX 500®) in males with CP/CPPS. All patients with a diagnosis of CP/CPPS attending the same urologic centre between March and October 2012 were enrolled in this randomised controlled phase III study. Participants were randomised to receive oral capsules of DEPROX 500® (two capsules every 24 h) or ibuprofen (600 mg, one tablet three times a day) for four weeks. The National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI), International Prostate Symptom Score and Quality of Well-Being (QoL) questionnaires were used. In the intention-to-treat analysis, 87 males (25 class IIIa and 62 class IIIb) with a mean age of 33.6±5.9 years were randomly allocated to the DEPROX 500® (n=41) or ibuprofen (n=46) treatment groups. At the follow-up examination (following one month of treatment), in the DEPROX 500® group, 31/41 patients (75.6%) reported an improvement in quality of life, defined as a reduction of the NIH-CPSI total score by ≥25%, compared with 19/46 (41.3%) in the control group (P=0.002). The greater improvement in the DEPROX 500® group compared with the ibuprofen group was statistically significant (treatment difference in the NIH-CPSI pain domain, -2.14±0.51, P<0.001; QoL scores, P=0.002). All patients were negative at the Meares-Stamey test evaluation. Adverse events were less frequent in the DEPROX 500® group than in the ibuprofen group. The DEPROX 500® treatment significantly improved total symptoms, pain and quality of life compared with ibuprofen in patients with CP/CPPS, without severe side-effects
Ion diffusion modelling of Fricke-agarose dosemeter gels
In Fricke-agarose gels, an accurate determination of the spatial dose distribution is hindered by the diffusion of ferric ions. In this work, a model was developed to describe the diffusion process within gel samples of finite length and, thus, permit the reconstruction of the initial spatial distribution of the ferric ions. The temporal evolution of the ion concentration as a function of the initial concentration is derived by solving Fick's second law of diffusion in two dimensions with boundary reflections. The model was applied to magnetic resonance imaging data acquired at high spatial resolution (0.3 mm) and was found to describe accurately the observed diffusion effect
