    Selenium in dairy cattle of Sao Paulo state. III. Selenium supplementation at Descaivado, SP, Brazil

    Na Fezenda Agrindus, em Descalvado, São Paulo, foram separadas 30 vacas da raça Holandesa Preta e Branca, com parição prevista para 4 a 6 meses à frente. Esses animais foram sorteados para três tratamentos: A) Testemunha; B) 2,0 kg de farelo de trigo/ animal/dia, como fonte de Selênio orgânico e C) 2 mg de Selênio inorgânico/animal/dia com selenito de sódio. Os resultados de análises de sangue para o mineral, realizadas a cada 2 meses até o momento do parto, mostraram que a suplementação de Selênio inorgânico aumentou significativamente o teor de Selênio sérico das vacas, mas a administração de Selênio orgânico, não. Ocorreu um caso de retenção de placenta no tratamento com Selênio inorgânico, e um caso no tratamento testemunha.In Agrindus Farm, at Descalvado, São Paulo, 30 dairy cows, with expected parturitions for 4 to 6 months from the beginning of the experiment, were distributed in a randomized design to three treatments: A) control; B) 2,0 kg of wheat bran/cow/day, as supplement of organic selenium; C) 2 mg of inorganic selenium/cow/day, as sodium selenite. The results from serum analysis for selenium showed that inorganic selenium supplementation significantly increased the serum selenium levels, but organic selenium supplementation did not. One event of retained placenta was registered in treatment C and another one in treatment A

    Zootechnical profile of the dairy farms in southern Minas Gerais State, Brazil

    Minas Gerais State (MG) and especially its southern portion, plays an important role in milk production nationwide. This study characterized the livestock profile in 40 dairy herds in southern MG. Information obtained through interviews was used to construct a database and describe the variability present in the group, highlighting what is typical in this sample in order to reach conclusions. The farms evaluated have a median total area of 110 ha (interquartile range/DI = 223 ha), 82 total cows (DI = 98 animals) with 62 in milk (DI = 80 animals), mean daily milk production of 20 ± 7.4 L/cow and median production of the herd of 1350 L (DI = 1725 L). In most of the farms (60%) replacement animals are reared in semi-intensive systems; twice daily milked is most common (87.5%) using milking machinery with a pipeline 72.5%), and artificial insemination (AI) is practiced (65%). Regarding animal health, a significant proportion of the producers have not adopted a health management protocol including such practices as burying placentas (7.5%) and aborted fetuses (52.6%). These results indicate that there is great heterogeneity in milk production procedures used in southern MG and that most of the milk is supplied by small farms, based on family labor and use of technologies such as AI and mechanical milking

    Experimental orthotopic breast cancer as a model for investigation of mechanisms in malignancy and metastasis to the lymph nodes

    To understand the fundamental mechanisms behind malignancy of breast tumors and also contribute to the discovery of improved methods for prevention, diagnosis and treatment, animal cancer models remain essential. We aimed to establish an optimal orthotopic cancer model for breast cancer in the immunocompetent Swiss mouse, describing the detailed microanatomy of the mammary glands, the sentinel lymph node and lymphatic mapping, evaluating histopathological changes and characterizing the tumor by computed microtomography and interleukins expression. The inoculation of fresh Ehrlich tumor cells led to a detectable tumor as early as 24 hours later; after 7 days, mammary, muscular, dermal vascular and lymphatic invasion were observed and also micrometastases in mammary adipose tissue, sentinel lymph node and contralateral lymph node. From the inoculation site the tumor invaded the host mammary gland structures, the dermis and endomysium of skeletal muscle tissue. Type 1 T helper cytokine levels (IL-1β and IL-17) were significantly higher than anti-inflammatory Type 2 T helper (IL-4) after inoculation of fresh tumor cells. Differently, frozen tumor cells induced tumor development only 14 days after the inoculation while presenting expression of distinct interleukins. The set of findings indicates that orthotopic transplantation provides the microenvironment critical for cell interactions involved in the development of cancer and subsequent metastasis. In this regard, the anatomical and physiological knowledge of the mammary glands and ductal networks favor studies, diagnoses and therapies related to breast cancer and metastasis. Moreover, this study provides anatomical support for the understanding of the lymphatic spread process of cancer cells.</p
