    Recurrence and Polya number of general one-dimensional random walks

    The recurrence properties of random walks can be characterized by P\'{o}lya number, i.e., the probability that the walker has returned to the origin at least once. In this paper, we consider recurrence properties for a general 1D random walk on a line, in which at each time step the walker can move to the left or right with probabilities ll and rr, or remain at the same position with probability oo (l+r+o=1l+r+o=1). We calculate P\'{o}lya number PP of this model and find a simple expression for PP as, P=1ΔP=1-\Delta, where Δ\Delta is the absolute difference of ll and rr (Δ=lr\Delta=|l-r|). We prove this rigorous expression by the method of creative telescoping, and our result suggests that the walk is recurrent if and only if the left-moving probability ll equals to the right-moving probability rr.Comment: 3 page short pape

    Meiotic Stability, Chloroplast DNA Polymorphisms, and Morphological Traits of Upland X Lowland Switchgrass Reciprocal Hybrids

    Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) has two cytotypes or cytoplasm types, L and U, that are associated with the lowland and upland ecotypes, respectively. The L cytotypes are tetraploids while the U cytotypes can be either tetraploids or octaploids. The objective of this research was to characterize meiotic stability of reciprocal crosses of U and L plants as indicated by chromosome pairing at meiosis and to determine the mode of inheritance of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) in the hybrids of these cytotypes. Morphological markers that characterize the parents and hybrids also were investigated to confirm that progeny were true hybrids. Reciprocal crosses were made between Kanlow (L tetraploid) and Summer (U tetraploid) plants. Pubescence on the upper surface of the leaf blade, foliage color, and seed size were evaluated as markers to verify hybridization. Meiotic pairing of some of the hybrids was analyzed at the diakinesis stage of meiosis by means of immature anthers. The clone pRR12 from a spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) cpDNA library was used as a chloroplast hybridization probe to determine chloroplast inheritance. For all the morphological traits evaluated, the hybrids were intermediate in comparison to the parents except for seed width. Chromosome pairing was primarily bivalent in all hybrids. The viability of the hybrid seed and the normal meiotic chromosome pairing of the hybrids indicate a high degree of similarity between upland and lowland genomes. In the cpDNA analysis, all verified hybrids examined carried a fragment identical in size to the fragment of the female parent, indicating predominance of maternal inheritance of the cpDNA in switchgrass

    Bulk experimental evidence of half-metallic ferromagnetism in doped manganites

    We report precise measurements and quantitative data analysis on the low-temperature resistivity of several ferromagnetic manganite films. We clearly show that there exists a T^{4.5} term in low-temperature resistivity, and that this term is in quantitative agreement with the quantum theory of two-magnon scattering for half metallic ferromagnets. Our present results provide the first bulk experimental evidence of half-metallic ferromagnetism in doped manganites.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Holocene slip rate along the Gyaring Co Fault, central Tibet

    Although geodetic measurements of interseismic deformation in interior Tibet suggest slow strain accumulation, active slip along the right-lateral Gyaring Co Fault is suggested to be between 8 and 21 mm/yr. Reliable geologic constraints on the slip rate along this fault are sparse. Here we document 12 ± 2m of right-lateral displacement of lacustrine shorelines across the Gyaring Co Fault. Optically stimulated luminescence ages of the shorelines are tightly clustered between 4.1 and 4.4 ka. These data require an average slip rate of 2.2-3.2mm/yr along the central Gyaring Co Fault during the latter half of the Holocene. Consideration of seismic cycle effects allows the possibility of slightly higher average slip rates, up to 2.2-4.5mm/yr. Overall, our results suggest that the slip rate along the Gyaring Co Fault is similar to other strike-slip faults in interior Tibet, supporting the notion that active deformation in this region is distributed among numerous, slowly moving faults

    Mir-21-Sox2 Axis Delineates Glioblastoma Subtypes with Prognostic Impact.

    UNLABELLED: Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive human brain tumor. Although several molecular subtypes of GBM are recognized, a robust molecular prognostic marker has yet to be identified. Here, we report that the stemness regulator Sox2 is a new, clinically important target of microRNA-21 (miR-21) in GBM, with implications for prognosis. Using the MiR-21-Sox2 regulatory axis, approximately half of all GBM tumors present in the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and in-house patient databases can be mathematically classified into high miR-21/low Sox2 (Class A) or low miR-21/high Sox2 (Class B) subtypes. This classification reflects phenotypically and molecularly distinct characteristics and is not captured by existing classifications. Supporting the distinct nature of the subtypes, gene set enrichment analysis of the TCGA dataset predicted that Class A and Class B tumors were significantly involved in immune/inflammatory response and in chromosome organization and nervous system development, respectively. Patients with Class B tumors had longer overall survival than those with Class A tumors. Analysis of both databases indicated that the Class A/Class B classification is a better predictor of patient survival than currently used parameters. Further, manipulation of MiR-21-Sox2 levels in orthotopic mouse models supported the longer survival of the Class B subtype. The MiR-21-Sox2 association was also found in mouse neural stem cells and in the mouse brain at different developmental stages, suggesting a role in normal development. Therefore, this mechanism-based classification suggests the presence of two distinct populations of GBM patients with distinguishable phenotypic characteristics and clinical outcomes. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Molecular profiling-based classification of glioblastoma (GBM) into four subtypes has substantially increased our understanding of the biology of the disease and has pointed to the heterogeneous nature of GBM. However, this classification is not mechanism based and its prognostic value is limited. Here, we identify a new mechanism in GBM (the miR-21-Sox2 axis) that can classify ∼50% of patients into two subtypes with distinct molecular, radiological, and pathological characteristics. Importantly, this classification can predict patient survival better than the currently used parameters. Further, analysis of the miR-21-Sox2 relationship in mouse neural stem cells and in the mouse brain at different developmental stages indicates that miR-21 and Sox2 are predominantly expressed in mutually exclusive patterns, suggesting a role in normal neural development

    An IRAK1-PIN1 signalling axis drives intrinsic tumour resistance to radiation therapy

    Drug-based strategies to overcome tumour resistance to radiotherapy (R-RT) remain limited by the single-agent toxicity of traditional radiosensitizers (for example, platinums) and a lack of targeted alternatives. In a screen for compounds that restore radiosensitivity in p53 mutant zebrafish while tolerated in non-irradiated wild-type animals, we identified the benzimidazole anthelmintic oxfendazole. Surprisingly, oxfendazole acts via the inhibition of IRAK1, a kinase thus far implicated in interleukin-1 receptor (IL-1R) and Toll-like receptor (TLR) immune responses. IRAK1 drives R-RT in a pathway involving IRAK4 and TRAF6 but not the IL-1R/TLR-IRAK adaptor MyD88. Rather than stimulating nuclear factor-κB, radiation-activated IRAK1 prevented apoptosis mediated by the PIDDosome complex (comprising PIDD, RAIDD and caspase-2). Countering this pathway with IRAK1 inhibitors suppressed R-RT in tumour models derived from cancers in which TP53 mutations predict R-RT. Moreover, IRAK1 inhibitors synergized with inhibitors of PIN1, a prolyl isomerase essential for IRAK1 activation in response to pathogens and, as shown here, in response to ionizing radiation. These data identify an IRAK1 radiation-response pathway as a rational chemoradiation therapy target

    Subleading-twist effects in single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on a longitudinally polarized hydrogen target

    Single-spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive production of charged pions in deep-inelastic scattering from transversely and longitudinally polarized proton targets are combined to evaluate the subleading-twist contribution to the longitudinal case. This contribution is significantly positive for (\pi^+) mesons and dominates the asymmetries on a longitudinally polarized target previously measured by \hermes. The subleading-twist contribution for (\pi^-) mesons is found to be small
