Some Global Aspects of Duality is String Theory

We explore some of the global aspects of duality transformations in String Theory and Field Theory. We analyze in some detail the equivalence of dual models corresponding to different topologies at the level of the partition function and in terms of the operator correspondence for abelian duality. We analyze the behavior of the cosmological constant under these transformations. We also explore several examples of non-abelian duality where the classical background interpretation can be maintained for the original and the dual theories. In particular we construct a non-abelian dual of SL(2,R)SL(2,R) which turns out to be a three-dimensional black holeComment: 31pp. One figure available upon request. CERN-TH-6991/6

Power scaling rules for charmonia production and HQEFT

    Get PDF
We discuss the power scaling rules along the lines of a complete Heavy Quark Effective Field Theory (HQEFT) for the description of heavy quarkonium production through a color-octet mechanism. To this end, we firstly derive a tree-level heavy quark effective Lagrangian keeping both particle-antiparticle mixed sectors allowing for heavy quark-antiquark pair annihilation and creation, but describing only low-energy modes around the heavy quark mass. Then we show the consistency of using HQEFT fields in constructing four-fermion local operators a la NRQCD, to be identified with standard color-octet matrix elements. We analyze some numerical values extracted from charmonia production by different authors and their hierarchy in the light of HQEFT.Comment: LaTeX, 19 pages, 3 EPS figure

Photonic crystals with defect structures fabricated through a combination of holographic lithography and two-photon lithography

    Get PDF
This paper presents the capability of direct laser writing of complex defect structures in holographically formed three-dimensional photonic crystals in dipentaerythritol penta/hexaacrylate (DPHPA) monomers mixed with photoinitiators. The three-dimensional photonic crystal template was fabricated through prism-based holographic lithography. Defect structures are fabricated through the two-photon polymerization excited by a femtosecond laser. The strengths of two optical lithographic techniques are combined with holographic lithography providing a rapid and large area microfabrication and two-photon lithography providing flexibility in fabrication of defect structures. The optical fabrication process is simplified in the negative tone DPHPA without prebake and postexposure bake as is required of SU-8 while maintaining a capability for constructing photonic structures with small features. © 2010 American Institute of Physics

A heavy quark effective field lagrangian keeping particle and antiparticle mixed sectors

    Get PDF
We derive a tree-level heavy quark effective Lagrangian keeping particle-antiparticle mixed sectors allowing for heavy quark-antiquark pair annihilation and creation. However, when removing the unwanted degrees of freedom from the effective Lagrangian one has to be careful in using the classical equations of motion obeyed by the effective fields in order to get a convergent expansion on the reciprocal of the heavy quark mass. Then the application of the effective theory to such hard processes should be sensible for special kinematic regimes as for example heavy quark pair production near threshold.Comment: LaTeX, 14 pages, 1 EPS figure

Holographically formed three-dimensional Penrose-type photonic quasicrystal through a lab-made single diffractive optical element

    Get PDF
Large-area three-dimensional Penrose-type photonic quasicrystals are fabricated through a holographic lithography method using a lab-made diffractive optical element and a single laser exposure. The diffractive optical element consists of five polymer gratings symmetrically orientated around a central opening. The fabricated Penrose-type photonic quasicrystal shows ten-fold rotational symmetry. The Laue diffraction pattern from the photonic quasi-crystal is observed to be similar to that of the traditional alloy quasi-crystal. A golden ratio of 1.618 is also observed for the radii of diffraction rings, which has not been observed before in artificial photonic quasicrystals. © 2010 Optical Society of America

Searching for New Physics in Leptonic Decays of Bottomonium

    Get PDF
New Physics can show up in various well-known processes already studied in the Standard Model, in particular by modifying decay rates to some extent. In this work, I examine leptonic decays of Υ\Upsilon vector resonances of bottomonium below BBˉB\bar{B} production, subsequent to a magnetic dipole radiative structural transition of the vector resonance yielding a pseudoscalar continuum state, searching for the existence of a light Higgs-like neutral boson that would imply a slight but experimentally measurable breaking of lepton universality.Comment: LaTeX, 12 pages, 1 EPS figur

Intercomparison of spectroradiometers and Sun photometers for the determination of the aerosol optical depth during the VELETA-2002 field campaign

    Get PDF
[ 1] In July 2002 the VELETA-2002 field campaign was held in Sierra Nevada ( Granada) in the south of Spain. The main objectives of this field campaign were the study of the influence of elevation and atmospheric aerosols on measured UV radiation. In the first stage of the field campaign, a common calibration and intercomparison between Licor-1800 spectroradiometers and Cimel-318 Sun photometers was performed in order to assess the quality of the measurements from the whole campaign. The intercomparison of the Licor spectroradiometers showed, for both direct and global irradiances, that when the comparisons were restricted to the visible part of the spectrum the deviations were within the instruments' nominal accuracies which allows us to rely on these instruments for measuring physical properties of aerosols at the different measurement stations. A simultaneous calibration on AOD data was performed for the Cimel-318 Sun photometers. When a common calibration and methodology was applied, the deviation was lowered to much less than 0.01 for AOD. At the same time an intercomparison has been made between the AOD values given by the spectroradiometers and the Sun photometers, with deviations obtained from 0.01 to 0.03 for the AOD in the visible range, depending on the channel. In the UVA range, the AOD uncertainty was estimated to be around 0.02 and 0.05 for Cimel and Licor respectively. In general the experimental differences were in agreement with this uncertainty estimation. In the UVB range the AOD measurements should not be used due to maximum instrumental uncertainties

Authentication of tequilas using pattern recognition and supervised classification

[Abstract] Sales of reputed, Mexican tequila grown substantially in last years and, therefore, counterfeiting is increasing steadily. Hence, methodologies intended to characterize and authenticate commercial beverages are a real need. They require a combination of analytical characterization and chemometric tools. This work reports concisely on the former and focus on the chemometric tools employed so far in connection with them. Further, a practical case study presents the classification capabilities of nine supervised classification methods to differentiate white, rested, aged and extra-aged tequilas. The largest set of certified tequilas employed so far was considered. In general, non linear methods performed best than linear ones (accuracy higher than 94% in both training and validation). The case study demonstrates that it is possible to develop fast, cheap, easy to implement and reliable analytical methodologies to authenticate and classify samples of tequilas.Xunta de Galicia; GRC2013-047Ministerio de Industria, EnergĂa y Competitividad; FJCI-2015-2607

Non-abelian T-duality, Ramond Fields and Coset Geometries

    Get PDF
We extend previous work on non-abelian T-duality in the presence of Ramond fluxes to cases in which the duality group acts with isotropy such as in backgrounds containing coset spaces. In the process we generate new supergravity solutions related to D-brane configurations and to standard supergravity compactifications.Comment: 35 pages, Late
