The Translation of D. H. Lawrence’s Metaphors: the French Censored Passages in “The Rainbow” as a Case in Point

[full article and abstract in English] The aim of this study is to explore D. H. Lawrence’s style through the prism of his use of metaphor. As a particularly enlightening method, I shall compare some of the censored passages in “The Rainbow” (1915) against their French translations (1939, 2002). Focusing my attention on their stylistic particularities, I will examine the manner in which they were translated into French. The central argument of my paper is that Lawrence’s metaphors related to the body are a relevant tool highlighting the author’s vision of human relationships, within the context of prevalent views in the beginning of the 20th century. The British authorities banned “The Rainbow” since its first publication and accused Lawrence of pornography. Therefore, it is important to glance back in order to understand the reason behind the censorship and see that the translations of Lawrence’s oeuvre were decisive in spreading his ideas beyond the frontiers of his country of origin. My analysis mainly draws on a descriptive approach but it is at the crossroads of several paradigms, namely the interpretative approach in Translation Studies and the cognitive approach to the study of metaphors.[straipsnis ir santrauka anglĆł kalba

HARPO: a TPC as a gamma-ray telescope and polarimeter

A gas Time Projection Chamber can be used for gamma-ray astronomy with excellent angular-precision and sensitivity to faint sources, and for polarimetry, through the measurement of photon conversion to e+e−e^+e^- pairs. We present the expected performance in simulations and the recent development of a demonstrator for tests in a polarized photon beam.Comment: SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation, Ultraviolet to gamma ray, Montr\'eal, Canada 2014. v2: note added in proof. Key words: Furoncles, myiase, mouche

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

0391: Cardiac involvement in ankylosing spondylitis

    Get PDF
BackgroundCardiac involvement in ankylosing spondylitis is common. We have tried through this study to analyze the cardiovascular events among 50 patients with ankylosing spondylitis.MethodsA retrospective study including 50 patients with ankylosing spondylitis. All patients underwent a complete physical examination with a heart and lung auscultation and an electro-cardiogram (ECG). Transthoracic ultrasound was performed whenever there was an abnormal physical examination and/or ECG.ResultsThe study included 47 men and 3 women, the sex ratio is 15,6. The average age of onset was 26±7 years. The mode of onset is axial in 95% of cases (low back pain and/or buttock). The extra-articular manifestations are present in 54% of cases. Cardiac involvement is present in 9 cases (18% of cases). The reason for consultation is dyspnea in 2 patients. In other cases, cardiac involvement was discovered incidentally. Aortic regurgitation was noted in 4 patients. Mitral insufficiency was found in 3 cases. Two patients have predominantly septal hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and one patient presented an array of pulmonary insufficiency. The average time of onset of cardiac involvement was 8±5 years. All patients were put under special medical treatment of their heart, with good clinical outcome.ConclusionCardiac involvement in ankylosing spondyllitis is seen more frequently in men, especially in the old cases. A close relationship between time to onset of aortic insufficiency and duration of disease progression was found. It would be responsible for one third of deaths of patients. It was significantly more frequent in HLA B27 positive patients (especially complete atrioventricular block and aortic insufficiency)

Reversible nephrotic syndrome secondary to pulmonary hydatid disease

Most patients with pulmonary hydatidosis are children. The disease may be asymptomatic or revealed by unusual events such as a glomerulopathy. An 8-year-old boy from a rural part of Tunisia presented with generalised oedema and macroscopic haematuria. There was no familial history of renal disease. He had a normal blood pressure (100/60 mmHg), and a pleural effusion was detected. Urinalysis showed nephrotic range proteinuria (375 mg/kg/d) and microscopic haematuria. His serum total protein concentration was 40 g/l and his serum albumin was 10 g/l. Renal biopsy showed capillary wall thickening and duplication, and mesangial cell proliferation in the glomeruli, characteristic of mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis. Renal and abdominal ultrasound images showed increased echogenicity of the kidneys and mild ascites. Radiology revealed three large pulmonary hydatid cysts. The largest cyst occupied the entire right upper lobe and compressed the superior vena cava. Hydatid disease was confirmed by a strongly positive serum enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for echinococcus. The patient was treated with high protein intake, dipyramidol and captopril; both right lung cysts were resected, followed by the left pulmonary cyst 4 weeks later. Hydatid cyst was confirmed histopathologically. He recovered well, the serum ELISA for echinococcus became negative, and follow-up urine examination and thoracic computerised tomography were normal 6 months after surgery, confirming good renal recovery and absence of pulmonary hydatid disease

Measurement of 1.7 to 74 MeV polarised gamma rays with the HARPO TPC

Current {\gamma}-ray telescopes based on photon conversions to electron-positron pairs, such as Fermi, use tungsten converters. They suffer of limited angular resolution at low energies, and their sensitivity drops below 1 GeV. The low multiple scattering in a gaseous detector gives access to higher angular resolution in the MeV-GeV range, and to the linear polarisation of the photons through the azimuthal angle of the electron-positron pair. HARPO is an R&D program to characterise the operation of a TPC (Time Projection Chamber) as a high angular-resolution and sensitivity telescope and polarimeter for {\gamma} rays from cosmic sources. It represents a first step towards a future space instrument. A 30 cm cubic TPC demonstrator was built, and filled with 2 bar argon-based gas. It was put in a polarised {\gamma}-ray beam at the NewSUBARU accelerator in Japan in November 2014. Data were taken at different photon energies from 1.7 MeV to 74 MeV, and with different polarisation configurations. The electronics setup is described, with an emphasis on the trigger system. The event reconstruction algorithm is quickly described, and preliminary measurements of the polarisation of 11 MeVphotons are shown.Comment: Proceedings VCI201
